My truncata is not doing well!!!
Hai guys,
My truncata is not doing well:crying: The new leaf is 70% smaller than the previous one. There are contraction between the lid and the pitcher..what i mean is the lid opens so fast when the pitcher is about 3 inches big.All the pitchers start drying up. I need help ..please anyone save this little guy! I'll post picture soon. Thanx! |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
:crying:
Aliamyz, my truncata, Alata x truncata and Sibu x truncata happen to behave like that too. my sibu x truncata previous pitcher-ed large pitcher, but today I look at the latest one, it is half of the size and it opens its lid already. Is it the weather?? Most of my pitchers dry up faster than ever before. Like alata x truncata open new pitcher last month, normally its pitcher can last for two - three months, but now it dry up less than a month... My truncata also behave the same. Worst is, the pitcher is getting smaller and smaller but bigger leaves. I see today my new pitcher has smaller lid than its pitcher. The pitcher over-size its lib. I will take some shot of it. What is going on??? How come truncata only??? |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
How long do you had that truncata ali?If you got it recently then the plant maybe adjusting to your conditions.
If you had them for long time then there something wrong.Truncata are very robust plant.Check the leaves and the root.See if there is any pests or what.Too much watering can cause root rot and too little sunshine also bad. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
I found N. truncata needs very porous media to thrive, mine grew in perlite and sphagnum moss, placed under the tree receiving dappled sunlight. The pitchers are huge. I watered twice every day as this media mix can get dry quite fast.
Ali: if you obtained your plant not too long ago, then it could be acclimatising to your condition as what Alienfx said. Jeff: I think your truncata need more water and sunlight, but make sure the water drains out every time you water. Water logged could cause root rot. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
TS
my truncata pot is always drained. Sunlight? yes I did. Morning sun til noon. Facing East only. Bright shade for the rest of the days YOu know what, I noticed my Truncata leaves turn yellowish along the edges of the leaves especially those leaves which will face noon sunlight. They look yellowish than those under shade by noon. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
OK guys,
These are what i did to my truncata: i'll water it when it doesn't rain. I got it 5 months ago. i changed the place recently after i've heard from other forumers about the light intensity.(i was growing it in full sun) The leaves are so small..i'll try to post a pic later. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Ali, what is the conds of the new leaves? The best solution is take the plant out, check the roots, give another fresh well drain media.

....... then i have no where to grow.............
If i put a cloth or anything on top of the corridor, i will be sued for putting dangerous item endanger the life of passer by. Nowasday most singaporean whom they hang their offering "container" are forced to bring down. Well........ no choice but to see it grows smaller pitcher and dead later. Misery Singapore life. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Ok guys,
I've repot it with 50% cocopeat 10% charcoal and 40% of sphagum moss for truncata and place it where it will receive evening sunlight at about 3 to 7p.m. I've cut all the pitchers and small leaves. Not all but some, still have 4 leaves and 1 pitcher.Anything i should do next..like the water amount? |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Hi Ali
Hey so did u check the media when u repotted it any bugs mealy bug...worms?????Most of my media has somesort of bug in it and i realise ants the like to go near neps for me.Now my truncata has already recovered from adpating and transplant shock. Now having one cacated leaf and 4 normal leaves 1 pitcher and 1 more growing.Mine get sunlight the whole day from morning till night im not sure how to help but i water my plants everyday and spray them 2 times a day.Hope your truncata will do well Ken |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Don't use too big pot, size just enough compared with the roots, as truncata like to grow in a compact (small) pot.

Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Hope your truncata recovers.

Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
No bugs Ken...Wijaya, i did use very big clay pot for my truncata but now i'm using small plastic pot...Thanx Aaron!

Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Hope your truncata will bounce back pretty soon, killed one of my trunc because I put it into too big a pot. Learned my lesson here.

Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
What is the relationship between the size of the pot and the effect to the plants?
|
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Logically, the plants roots are functioning as support and receptors of the food for the whole plant also as excess food storage for later used.
By 'support' means the roots are the anchor for the plant, so with newly planted plants at first the plants are shaky because the roots still not grabing the media yet, and over time they will eventually growing when roots sits well in the media (sorry for the wording used, hope you can understand), so the bigger the pot the longer it takes the roots to settle, that is why we have to do regular repotting for the growing plant, as the roots will eventually overgrown the pot. Arrgghh... sorry just quite hard to put into wording  Ed |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
OoOoOoO i didn't know the size of a pot can actually affect the plant. How do you guys measure pots annyway???I don't think neps need a big pot at all no matter what size it is because neps has very small rooting systems i've seen a truncata root its pretty small for the plant, but the exceptions are some neps do have big rooting systems for example N bicalcarata for all i know

Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Yes Ken,
Nepenthes do have small root systems and what i thought is that if we pot it in a bigger pot, no need to repot it again for a few years to come.Come to think bout it,i'm in a lack of space and have to give up on my cactus collections to continue growing nepenthes in my balcony. We measure the length of the pot by inches.I've count the age of my truncata by counting it's leaves.1 month = 1 leaf,10 leaves = 10 months. My truncata is 10 months old. Some like rajah, bicalcarata etc, must have bigger pot! Thanx Wijaya. |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Hi everybody,
CPNut reporting... this would be my 1st every post in this forum. Since this thread is abt trucata, I'm still a bit confuse as to the optimal light condition for growing this plant. So far, the info I gather from various sources implied that this plant prefer shaded growing condition. Is that correct? Or this plant prefer shade when it's still young, like sumantrana? Please advice... thx |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Truncata generally can take more sunlight than other nepenthes due to it's thick and big leaves.Species like sumatrana, ampullaria, rafflesiana, bicalcarata etc..do need more shadier condition than others.
BTW, nice to meet you Cpnut ! |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
Aliamyz,
Thanks for the input, nice to meet you too... hope your truncata will recover soon |
Re: My truncata is not doing well!!!
