ampullaria " hot lip " speckled
 

an interesting feature of this form was their peristome colour variation - light red and maroon.

It was a usual heath forest where their presence can be misleading - their appearance look like spotted ampullaria at young stage where the red peristome isn't visible. A close inspection would often show a thread of light red tinge on the outer part of the peristome.

The following photo shows a young plant with peristome colours transformation at different stages.

It is not known what contribute to the maroon colour , eventhough they occur in the same location, grown in the open and slightly shaded by dense shrubs.

Wow, NICE amps! I really like the "red flag" peristome on the "similar clone taken at different location" shots. Almost like it's shouting out "Don't miss me, over here"!

What kind of percentage would you say of the amps you have seen in the wild have these red peristomes Robert?

I just cannot understand why there is not much diversity of ampularia forms in Peninsular Malaysia. We always see the green or speckle form but no red form, hot lips, etc.

The first picture really shows the peristome colour transformation at different stages. With each new leaf the peristome gets more red. Nice shot Robert.

Hi Shawn, there are not many such forms around. They occur in isolated pockets among the spotted, green and sometimes red varieties. I did a search of the area and counted only 17 plants, inclusive of 3 big mature ones already at flowering stage.

ken, right the long sleeves was to prevent cuts by wild grasses and mozzies bite ( i don't apply bugs repellent as this will frighten bugs off, we do bugs photography too ! )

David, probably there are such form around. Besides heath forest amp., also thrive near swamps. This was the case in Kalimantan, i was told.

Those are really nice and adourable "hotlip" amps, love them all especially the blood red peristome amp.

cpnut the green and spotted form are common, also in peninsular. In peninsular with the massive road infrastructure and land clearing being carried out you may have to search further, though i have no idea of the ground situation.

I have this form for 9 months already. Lately it recovered to give me stable pitchers. The hot lip is really sharp and bright. Another one of the MUST HAVE ampullaria forms.

Even non-CP fans will be blown away by those sexy lips.

David, Actually there are quite a number of amp varieties in Peninsular Malaysia. I have taken many pictures and will post them soon. *biggrin2*

Wong, can't wait to see what you saw.

As fas as I know, the peninsular amp only have a few varieties, the most common ones will be the speckled and green amps. There's also some with brownish peristome and pinkish peristome (in very shaded condition). I have also heard there's some tricolor variety found in southern Peninsular Malaysia but I haven't seen it myself.

Nepnut, I found many interesting neps during my last few trips to Southern Peninsular. Just to mention a few:

N Gracilis Speckle (Dark Maroon, Pink/red, Green)
N Amp Red Lip (Green, Speckle, Tricolour)
N Amp Red / Pink (Speckle) !! Aka. Sun Roasted Amp. Heh heh
N Raff Green (Only 1 plant)
N xHookeriana (Tricolour)
N xHookeriana Brown Lip (minor speckle)
N xTrichocarpa Red Lip (Speckle) (second plant found so far)
N Gracilis x N Raff (Pink) !! (only 1 plant)

I will only post the pictures in stages. So that your temperature will remain high for the next few weeks. Ha ha ha
