Drosera burmannii from southern Thailand
Hi everyone,
Had a chance to observe wild N. thorelii / Tiger living in situ around southern Thailand and guess what I stumbled upon living side by side with the wild nepenthes?? http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7480/drosera1.jpg http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1396/drosera2.jpg http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9853/drosera3.jpg http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/2874/drosera4.jpg http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/3366/drosera5.jpg You can't miss the N. thorelii seedling just beside the D. burmanii http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5259/drosera6.jpg Group Shots http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9415/drosera7.jpg http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/8367/drosera8.jpg The habitat http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/2374/drosera9.jpg |
Re: Drosera burmannii from southern Thailand
The place seems very dry.
That is nice!!!! Drosera in wild... I dont have chance go to wild yet. How I wish I can see such place with my own eyes!!!! |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Ya, weather around there is dry now. I've been told, during rainy season the wild neps will produce bigger and more colorful pitcher, I think D. burmanii there will probably exprience the same thing.... Mother nature works in a mysterious way....

Wow! Beautiful color.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Wow! Beautiful. Just love to look at Drosera in the wild. I've always wanted to see them with my own eyes but can't seem to find any in Peninsular Malaysia. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Wow i hope my burmanii will turn out to be like that......So far they look quite similar to your pics in terms of size but colour mine is pure green...Soo now i'm starting to give them direct sunlight...Hope they wont fry..

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Ken the D burmanii you're having will turn red once you expose them to enough sun. They need direct sun and lots of it. Whole plant will become red.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Ken, I have both the green and the more orange ones. They are side by side in the table getting equal amounts of sunlight so that's not the factor! I think that the orange ones I have came from seed from Casey! Thanks Casey!

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Shawn, what Ken is growing originated from my balcony. They should go red at the tips and the tentacles but the leaves remain green.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Yeah now i remembered they came from you.....Today i put it out for 2 hours in direct sunlight and when i took it back the pot it was in felt soo hot same with the LFS it was in...Anyways thanks BA for telling me how it should look like...Now its green with whitish/green tentacles.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Put it in a water tray with plenty of water. The water can take some of the heat hence keeping the pot cool.
Robert, sorry to hijack thread. |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Wah.... got hijacked... BAN !! *biggrin2* Just kidding ya.... *biggrin2*
So does that mean this all red variant is not common among cultivation ?? I've told there's another site with slighty bigger specimens... will definately take a look if got chance next time. |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
CPnut,
Would appreciate info on what is the medium the Burmanii and Theorelii are living in? Sandy clay?, peat? etc. etc. It would be nice if when members see CP insitu, that they also hopefully give info on the type of soil or medium the plant is living on, so that we can learn what type of potting mix to use on them :) To clarify cpnut I am stating this in General and not directly at you. :) Though you guys agree right? Oh, great photos and congratulations on finding them in the wild, man I have yet to see my first wild CP :( TTFN Arvin |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Hi Arvin,
Thanks. I totally agree with your view, it's still the best to learn from mother nature. That's why I've attached pics showing exposed soil in the natural habitat, just check my wild nep thread and you'll see it. Regarding the soil where the D. burmanii were found, it consist of very fine powderly sand with traces of organic matter (peat like sustance, dried leaves and twigs.) The surface of the sand may look quite dry because of the dry spell, but 1-2 cm under the surface is still moist. Hope this help. |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Thanks cpnut, yup saw your other post and you did mention there the sandy soil too. That is as we agree great info to know, for our cultivation. My Burmanii always have their roots wet, so I should really make the water tray dry out a bit some days. Also should add a bit of sand too.
Thanks again. TTFN Arvin |
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
They grow in Asia?(is thailand asia?)
|
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Yes they grow in Asia and Thailand is Asia
|
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
D. burmannii is widely distributed in Asia and Australia. It can be found in Malaysia too.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Oh....where?
|
Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
Marvin, it is kind of impossible to find any Drosera in developed area. There have been talks about looking for drosera in Langkawi by lisham in the old forum. I recon, on Peninsular Malaysia it is very hard to find any wild Drosera. You may have to goto Thailand or Sabah/Sarawak.

Re: Drosera burmanii from southern Thailand
It's very sad that all this natural habitat will be develop in the very near future. The site that I saw the Drosera and Nepenthes is situated next to an agriculture land... it's just a matter of time before they decide to clear more land to expand the farming operation.... :crying:
