We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
N. campanulata
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t...nulata_tip.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t...ulata_tip1.jpg ...but we actually have got good potential. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t...ulata_tip2.jpg http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t...ulata_tip3.jpg |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Some background...these N. campanulata plants were the "leftovers" because the growth tips have turned black. I potted them straight into burnt earth and in 2.5 months, they each produced three new leaves.

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Cindy, 2.5 months for three new leaves is impressive. I think you've found the perfect media for campanulata in your growing conditions. Maybe I should repot my campanulata to burnt earth too. :1thumbup:

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
any idea where to get burnt earth in area kl?
my campanulater seems not really happy with LFM:crying: |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
I grow my campanulata in 100% LFS. And it's doing well and pitchering.

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Nice !! Now have to get me a campanulata

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Hi Cindy
Now its really tempting me to try on more difficult and more beautiful plants.3 leaves in 2 and a half months is rather a lot my plants approximately makes only about 1 leaf per month for a reject its pretty fast growing.Like u said they have good potential. I have the same qeustions as Akirasama where to get burnt earth in KL???Or any other media whcih is good for neps i now only use 100% LFS....."cheap LFS"..maybe peat would be nice to Ken |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Here in northern Malaysia, burnt earth or sometime lable as "burnt soil" (not the black color type) can be easily found in local nursery, also used for bonzai. ~rm2.00 to rm2.50 per bag.

One thing I want to confirm is, is it burnt earth or burnt soil called 火烧泥 in chinese? Thank you:tongue: |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Akirasama,
Yes, the chinese called it 火烧泥, over here they collected the burnt soil from brick furnace. It's the leftover... |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Ah.......can anyone send me them ahahahahahaha just jking i'll try to get one from local nurseries.I don't know how to read chinese words and i don't know how to speak mandarin all i know is BM,English and Cantonease.A mix of LFS and burnt soil might be good hahah LFS for the topping....

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Oh you mean adenium obesums?????I have 1 of that i almost murdered it 3 times once because my towel fell on it crushed all its leaves and the other 2 times was because of some black tiny bugs.So far it has "died" and came back to life several times. It onced flowered for me.

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
I am using s/moss and perlite.....hope it is doing ok:smile:

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
PNorchids, it should be fine as long as you allow for some drying out inbetween watering. Most people would cringe if they see how dry I allow the LFS on the top to become. So allow me to quote what Robert posted on the S'pore forum. ;)
"The top exposed media layer looked dry but try to investigate the inner part and it feels moist... If the top layer look dry spray a small amount of water to it to comfort yourself." |

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Wish I had seen your burnt red earth thread when my other campanulata shows signs of rotting.
Now I'm growing the only one left with natural mountain red earth it's doing well. You have grown the "rejects" into Swans now! I'm sure it would be hard for you to part with them now. |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Yes, Isaac. I have got requests for them already.

Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
I grow my campa in life sphagnum moss, it produced pitchers but small. I didn't know it require drier condition to thrive. I watered twice every day! (my campa must be angry for me doing that :crying:) After seeing this thread, I quickly move it to a drier spot where it won't get any rain but only morning sun (bright for the rest of the day), and I cut down the watering now. I think I should transplant it to burnt earth to get big pitchers.
Cindy, is it OK to let it receive some direct morning sunlight? |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
I use LFS for my campa. It gets direct sunlight from about 1p.m. to 5p.m.. And it's growing well.
Here my little campa.^_^ https://forum.petpitcher.net/picture....&pictureid=188 |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Maybe some of you missed the following...That pitcher was formed with the plant growing in LFS and perlite.
https://forum.petpitcher.net/showthre...?t=1020&page=3 TS, N. campanulata loves light. |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Hmmm anyone has a adult plant or has cuttings for it?? Is it rare to find in cultivation or average?Since it loves heat and light it should be easy to care for
Ken |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Ken, the species is very compact and doesn't vine. So taking a cutting is not easy although I have actually done it before and succeeded in rooting it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone 'cos for the 2 months, I found myself checking on the cutting every chance I had. I was paranoid because it was my only medium sized campanulata at that time and it was very hard to come by.
Why I took a cutting? Because I thought it was suffering from root rot. It wasn't. When I cut the stem, I nearly cried seeing a very healthy core. The lower part of the stem didn't send out any new shoots and subsequently died. N. campanulata sends out offshoots/runners occasionally so these are a better source of new plants. |
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Cindy, since you also grow campa in mineral rich burnt earth, do you still fertilize the plant or add osmocote into the media?
|
Re: We were rejects from the latest BE order in July
Nope, no extra stuff given to the plants in burnt earth.
