Ferns!
Hi everyone
Ummmm....... I have ferns growing in some of my nep pots....I realised that ferns do grow very well and quite big in areas where you find neps in the wild don't they? So i have one more pot left which is a mixture of LFS and normal potting soil and somehow among all the pots which has ferns in them. But in the wild they grow normally in low nutrient soil along with CPs.That pot contains the most fern growth and also some different kind of fern...I like the growth of ferns on my nep pots because it gives a little more leafy look on the pot you know? I also wanna know more about this guys and how they grow or what media they do best on.So that maybe one day i can actually even start growing these commen ferns.Anyone has ever even tried "cultivating" them??? I have 2 different kind of fern...One has much more "leaves" and less visible stem and doesn't grow tall while the other one grows taller and taller...Has less leaves and has a lot of "stems"....So anyone knows where to learn more about these guys? And also if you have them growing everywhere take a pic and post it here:1thumbup: Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Google it Ken.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
I get ferns coming up in my CP pots, I have successfully transplanted some of them into normal potting mix. I also have coral fern species growing in one of my native binata pots. It grows in the standard peat and sand mix, standing in water.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Hi Ali
Yeqah i tried but theres so many species of ferns that its a little hard to ID them. Hi Khaos So you're saying that ferns do better in a more fertile pot? I have small ferns which nvr seem to grow bigger on my truncata pot which is 100% LFS as a media... Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
There are SO many different kinds of ferns, some small, and some get very large, very fast, even tree ferns. It really depends on which fern it is that you have with your other plants. I happen to have a few small ferns growing with my CPs as well, but pull out those that I know will overwhelm the pots, and everything in them. - Rich

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Hi
Well i don't pull them out like i use to anymore.........Anyways they don't even take up much space...The ferns which are growing beside my neps are around 15cm tall.........Not so big at all....Some just 5-10cm... Another thing i don't wanna open up another thread but does anyone in KL knows where to get Savage Garden by peter d amato near my place??? Does 1utama sell them? Particularly MPH? Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Your fern isn't going to harm, I guess. I like ferns......perhaps you could ask shawnintland.

Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Hi everyone
Anyways i noticed something on the ferns that grow on LFS instead of normal potting compost.... 1.The ferns are much bigger on the pot which has potting soil in it probally due to the amount of nutreints on it. 2.Ferns on normal potting compoest has a much develop rooting system which crawls around everywhere grasping to anything it can therefore making it very difficult to pull the whole plant out while those in pure LFS can easily be pulled out and has very small rooting system. I pulled out on of them and chucked it in my minibog...Well since i didn't wanna waste it haha.... Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Gee, I used to love having ferns everywhere, that's until they started to infest all my gemination pots!
Now I have varieties of ferns growing among my drosera & sarracenia seedling and sometimes even overcoming the pots hence kiliing most of my seedlings! I can't possibly pull them out most of the times, afraid I'd damage my plantlets roots, so I usually pinch + cut them off! I let them grow in moderation with my neps. though :) |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Hi Athene
Well i normally just let them grow wild but they stay in a very small size though not counting some exceptions.....People actually told me that ferns are good for seedlings....Because they provide a little shade and water which are held on the leaves of the ferns provide more humidity...But of course too much of everything isn't good. Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Ken, have you ever had them overpower your pot?
When you said you normally let them grow wild & they don't grow too big, how long a duration is that? What type of fern are you talking about? Any photo? |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
Hi Athene......
Never really overpower the pot.....None of them grew really big.....After awhile growth from them will just stop.I don't have a clear shot but as you can see in this plant theres a fern somewhere in the pot....I have another one 2 but its not in pics. http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...s/DSC00011.jpg Ken |
Re: Ferns!!!!!!!
I always pull out ferns. Not because of side effect to plants but because my plants look untidy with ferns.
|
Re: Ferns!
I lost plants to ferns, mainly a very vigour scrambling fern which can reach 1m in height (growing in seedling tray of 12cm x 12cm.) It completely fills any pot it in even if the potting medium is LFS.
I got into the happen of removing any fern in their 'Slime mould' stage when are in any of my seed punnets. With larger CP I will wait until I know what type of fern it is and then decide it fate. Is there a fern society in Malaysia? If so contact them and they might be able to help with the ID. This is what I did. |
Re: Ferns!
Ferns especially large ones will overwhelm your pot. Their leaves will shade light your intended growing plants hence inhibiting them from photosynthesising. Even those smaller ones have the ability to stun or kill as their extensive root system might choke plant's rooting system or even compete for nutrients and water.
To answer Khaos question about identifying fern. Ken, snap a couple of photos and post them here. Whenever Shawn has the time to grace this forum (he is up to his neck these days), he might be identify the ferns. |
Re: Ferns!
Well, ferns do look nice when they are small and harmless. I like the ferns growing in my truncata pot, gives Legolas a nice handsome side look in his pot.
Cheers |
Re: Ferns!
LOL you're funny ed....Legolas...

Re: Ferns!
hmm, so nep mixes are good for germinating fern spores?
I guess this makes sense since the mix stays humid and doen't move around much in the pot. Maybe someone should look into this some more. |
