Use transparent A4 paper to protect CP from rain

Drosera will doing better if we protected them from rain. But, it is costly, and troublesome to build a wood or metal cover for them. It will be “NO” for stingy person, especially me (always calculate here and there).

With suitable size of square container (im using transparent disposable plastic food containers) and transparent A4 paper, we can build 1 easily. Make a hole at side of container for water overflow purpose. Distance of the overflow hole from bottom of container is 2cm. Fill in the container with wet spagnum moss. Then, plant yours CP in the spagnum moss.

Cut the tranparent A4 paper to shape as shown
Attachment 2564

Slip the two shorter sides of the cut tranparent A4 paper into the planted container.

Final product.

No problem, we can use it for nepethes or any CP or plants. I place it at the top level of my CP rack (4 level rack), it is no problem under heavy rain/wind. And the sheet still looking good, even the disposable container started to become "crispy". :crying:

If afraid of wind, maybe sticky tape should help (scotch tape). Or heck staple it in place :) I use plastic cups on my pot and they do get blow away in strong winds :(

Casey, you mean that the material does not crumble easily from UV light? This is basically "Acetate" right? The one used for printing out to show on overhead projector? Cool idea. Allows for air flow at the side to boot.

Will work for Nepenthes seedlings as well I am sure.

Dont need to worry of wind. Since it is proven working. Reason behind it is, transparent sheet is Slip into the planted container. And water from the media is act like "glue" preassure. :shy: Dont know how to explain that.

The one that im using is those used in printing shop and normally become cover of printed book. And each 1 is just cost RM0.50+-.

That was exactly what I'm doing for my sundews and some VFTs. But mine bigger scale . I placed the plastic sheet over the big yellow container you are using now to place all your sundews. A big sheet to cover all. Buy the plastic sheet must be thick enough so it'll stand firm especially during heavy down pour.

What I meant was a big piece of soft plastic sheet placed like what you showed earlier:laugh:.
The way you put the hard plastic (on top of the yellow container), does it generate heat under sun? I worry it will be too hot and no air circulation in there, algae will be the next problem. I did put a glass sheet on top of one of my VFT pot, but I leave an opening to allow air circulation.

If you see it properly. I didnt cover the contrainer tightly. I use a big size of cork to support the hard plastic. Gap between tray and hard plastic is around 3cm.

TS, since you are using big size of soft plastic sheet. It is easily blow up by wind. May I know how you overcome that problem.

Casey, my whole container is full of pots, I just insert the plastic sheet in between inner side of the container and the pots, the pots will pressed tightly against the plastic sheet and the container. I don't face any problems with strong wind.
