Overnight tape water danger or not??
Recently, i was reading some article saying that we can use 自来水 or tape water(if i am not mistakenly translate) which had been put overnight to water CP plant, does this true??
If this really true, what happen to the chemical compound in the water? Had it been oxidized and become not harmful to the CP or it decompose into another matter which will not harm the plant? |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
For me, I didnt face any problem using tap water directly... So far as i know, tap water at Malaysia is safe for CP...

Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
OOhhh....then may i ask of the medium that all of you used for your CP?
Most of the CP of mine, i plant them using 100% of Sphagnum Moss I was planting Sarracenia and Nepenthes, How about Drosera? What medium should i gave it? |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
For sarracenia, I use Sphagnum Moss as well. Sometime, add in some perlite.
For nepenthes, I use coco-peat or spagnum moss + perlite. Depends on sp. and depends on how frequence you water them Most of Drosera, I use spagnum moss + perlite. Pgymy, spagnum peat moss + perlite + sand, or chopped spagnum moss + perlite + sand. |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
How about if i use 100% of Sphagnum Moss for Drosera? Will they rot? I never managed to find any perlite but can i used the Yellow rock that usually can be found around mountain area?

Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
You can use 100% of Sphagnum Moss for most of Drosera...

Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
For nepenthes I water with Tap water quite often, specially nowadays when we are having very dry summer. I think better to use tap water than no water at all. But also I have a big drum that I store tap water in to "age" it to allow chlorine to evaporate, just like if you are keeping fish. But as it is quite dry and hot, evaporation is so fast that I used up aged water quite fast, so I use tap water so far no problems, been doing this around 2 years already. I do not live in Malaysia though, but as Casey said her Tap water is okay as well.

Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
His* haha But last time when I tried to use tap water some kind of mold grew on the sphagnum moss:spinning: And my bical stunted:unsure:
|
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Bical? may i know what is that??
Then, what happen? Did it survive? |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Bical means 'Nepenthes Bicalcarata'. The mold that grew on Marvin's media is slime mold. It thrives on tap water that is full of chlorine and minerals. Also, low sunlight encourages its growth. Can be unsightly and disgusting, but doesn't kill CPs. For some reason though, I find that it stunts my nep's growth. Use a spoon or something to scrape it off and stop using tap water for sometime.
I am lucky that all my water supply is filtered by a Rocket brand filter before being used. So tap water is considerably safe for me. Tap water won't kill CPs the way most books describe. Water in Malaysia is quite clean. Also, all CPs don't mind a little minerals to absorb once in a while. Only if the minerals accumulate, especially CHLORINE, does it harm the CP. Neps are by far from my point of view, the hardiest CP that can tolerate tap watering. So in conclusion, tap watering is 25% dangerous and 85% usable. Erm, Allen, perlite and peat moss can be bought at Ace Hardware store. Generally speaking, I feel that peat moss is more suitable for germinating seeds. And LFS can be used for almost all CPs, except alkaline lovers. |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Alkaline lovers can grow well in acidic media too. Oh yea "stunted" means the growth stops for a while
|
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Bical is short for nepenthes bicalcarata. Mine suddenly died with no apparent reason(maybe I watered it too much)
|
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
OOhhhh....thanks guys, you really help a lot, hehe
Wow...the nepenthes bicalcarata really gorgeous and beautiful(even though it looks like very "garang") Previously, i was reading an article that coal also can use as a medium for CP, is that true? Sorry for too many question:sweating::2thumbup: |
Re: Overnight tape water danger or not??
Aaron: Bical lives in swamp la...no way you can over water it...Mine is sitting in water tray
Allen:Yea they look like vampires xP About that coal thing...I'm not sure, someone else confirm that? |
