Adlae, D. intermedia, D, Sphatulata and some Ping. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Well done... May I know how big is the tank?
It will better if, 1. the diveder is lower or same hiht with the 'land' 2. the diveder is more natural by glueing some stone on it 3. the diveder is not glue to the front glass |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Great job edwin..... :1thumbup::1thumbup::1thumbup:
More CP more CP.... hehehe |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Casey.
The tank dimension are 1.5ft x 1ft x 1ft. The divider are glue. That what i thinking to do so. But not glue with stone as there's hole at the divider afraid it might block the water flow thru the Cps area. I will going to top up some sphagnum moss later let the CPs grow for some time first. Edmund.. Thank you. Not really just try something else.... Erm.... you going to sponsor me some CPs? hehehe..... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
oh yah edmund . Do you still have the U. gibba? i need some to put at this Cps tank.
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Hey Edwin,
Nice setup you have there. Sure you can use some water based CP to populate the water reservoir. Some U gibba or aurea be nice. Be even nicer if there are some water wheel plant aka Aldrovanda. Hehe... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Thanks bactrus. That what i'm looking for. Casey just spare me some U.Gibba. ERM.. Aldrovanda.... If you have some to spare to me i'm ok... hahaha
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Nice setup, might try my hands on a design that is similar to what you made, I have a few spare glass lying around in the house :)
Good call about an Utric or Aldrovanda on the water reservoir, though I don't know if Aldrovanda will be happy in it, but hope you do suceed. It'll be like a "community CP Tank". cute! TTFN Arvin |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Got some Japanese Aldrovanda but still very few strands. Pretty easy to grow. Not ready to distribute yet.
Love to have a glass tank to have lateral view. Atm, only top down in my fiber tank. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Arvin,
If you really like to try it out. I suggest you to use arcylic than glass. Mine have a dis advantages. During hot sun the air circulation not so good. If you use arcylic you can make some window on the side part so it won't be too hot. But so far nothing happen to the plant, infact the D. Paradoxa getting reddish then before i put in the tank. Will upload the pic to next week.:2thumbup: |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Thanks for the tip. But if I were to have a tank, it'll still be glass as polycarbonate scratches very easily and UV degradation will cause it to become yellow. Though no doubt it is easy to handle.
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Yah. The Arcylic will be crack after sometime. But i seen some high grade arcylic which can stand the heat of the sun. If you can make some hole on the glass of course glass is the best. What i concern now is the tank temperature. I afraid if the air circulation no so good will make the CPs die.
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Yeah thanks for the tip, but like bactrus I will probably end up with a glass one as well, reason is that I am probably just going to reuse some spare glass that is lying around. :) What I might do however is not make the sides too tall!
TTFN Arvin |
Re: My first Cps tank.
If you are not planing to plant tall CPs like Sara, D. Filiformis then you can make the side wall not too high. Mine the sara already hit the top.:2thumbup:
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Arvin, You have experience in cutting glass I recon. Skin is crawling, last time my bro and I cut glass, he ended up with a 5 inches "oyster" on his middle finger. Fun though.
Edwin, Ventilation is easy. Side panels instead of using on whole piece. Use two pieces instead; leaving a gap in the middle for ventilation. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Bactrus.
My now still under observation. If ok i think i will not change the glass into arcylic. If really not good result, then will think again. haha.. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Here are some picture after 1 month.

Paradoxa grow fast and healthy. http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0300.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0301.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0302.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0303.jpg https://forum.petpitcher.net/%5BIMG%5....jpg%5B/IMG%5D |
Re: My first Cps tank.
I just saw this. Nicely done Edwin!
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Great job Edwin. The plants look to be loving your setup.
One question though, Have you thought about how you may be able to provide dormancy period to Sarra and temperate dews such as filiformis? |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Nice one Edwin.
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Thanks david and bactrus...
Strath76 Erm.. sorry i;m not quite understand your question? For the Sarra and Filiformis have domarcy period? Sorry i didn't know that these two plants have domancy...:blushing: Can anyone advise me.. hehe... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Hi Edwin, both of these plants along with VFT require a dormancy period to really look there best. They will continue to grow for a few seasons without it but will eventually die. There is currently a post going in the VFT section about providing a dormancy period for VFT's. I will post about how to provide dormancy for Sarra's in the next couple of weeks.
Generally though these plants require a drier period with temperatures below 5 degrees. The easiest method to supply this is to put themin the fridge. As I said I will post in the next couple of weeks in the Sarra section. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
I second everybody's comments so far Edwin - "Great Job"! It looks like 8-10 species in there and everybody looks quite happy together! Keep up the good work and post pictures again in a while!
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Strath76.
Oh I see. Thanks for your information. Waiting for your post soon. :1thumbup: Shawnintland. Thanks for your compliment. Last week i just add some drosera. i afraid it will be too crowd with drosera later.. Maybe later will post some Picture later. please advice. thank you... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Edwin, very nice setup. Congrats !
As for the dormancy ( when or if it happens ), I suggest that you just remove the dormant plants and place them elsewhere. Some of the plants will grow for a few years before becoming dormant, some sarracenias might be more dormant prone. It`s all part of the genetic structure of the plant which may make them dormant resistant or our environment which may somehow or other encourage the plants to remain vigorous. I also call it luck. *smile* |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Opps..... :crying: I delete the picture in photo bucket didn't realize that it will effected here too. But here are the last picture just took just now. My D. Burmani and D. intermedia (CUBA) are flowering. But i think the D. Filiformis not in good condition. Maybe will change place as too near the glass.. Please give some comment. Thank you.
Oh Yah i just swift the tank from outdoor to indoor. Now using 1 pc 36W pl light act as sun. http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0349.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0353.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0351.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0352.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0354.jpg http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...f/IMG_0355.jpg |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Hi Edwin, one PLL light is definitely not enough for the plant especially VFT and sarracenia. Sarracenia stenvensii is not a good candidate in this tank I'm afraid as it is too tall, the hot bulb will burn the pitchers as it grows taller. Suggest you to get a S psittacina if you would like to have a sarra in there.
D intermedia (Cuba) can get very red if given sufficient of grow light, I saw it in David's place, so lovely. I'm kind of worry when I first saw the fishes in the tank, will the minerals in the water harm your plants? :crying: How long have you shifted the tank indoor? Sorry if I'm being too direct. |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Oh thanks for your infomation. Actually i just shifted for 4 days. On the lighting demand i not so sure. As for the sarra i will change it as i also notice it not suitable for this tank. For the fish inside the tank i dun think it will harm much on the plants previously i saw some larva in this tank i'm worried it will become best place for the mosquitoes breed. so i put some fish, as long as the fish not die i think it won't harm. For the D. Intermedia mine won't be so red even i put direct sunlight.
Thank you for your advice and comment. i will be very happy as you can give me some suggestion :1thumbup:. Anyway for the light how many watts do you think it enough and also what kind of light. Can PL be use or i need to change. Please give me some advice. thank you again :2thumbup: |
Re: My first Cps tank.
What I meant 'harmful' is the waste from the fish, the mineral accumulated in the spahgnum moss will be harmful to CPs, and promote algae growth too. Oops... maybe I have been too worry... is the fish compartment has holes that allow the water to flow to the spahgnum moss? but i saw some holes on the plastic divider, but not sure there are holes on the lower portion.
I'm not too good in culculating the lumens, but I see your tank is quite dim, it need at least three 36w PLL bulbs. But again it still depends on how close the plants to the light. The hot air generated is the problem when you get more bulbs, you must also get a fan to blow away the hot air. Try to get also a small PC fan (with timer) to make some air circulation in the tank, or else algae will be your next problem. Suggestion: Place some wood or rock will create more natural feeling, maybe some live sphagnum moss or some other mosses will help too. :2thumbup: |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Oh thanks. i will try to find some decoration stuff for it. hehe.. This tank i will move back to outdoor. i think it will look more nice staying outdoor. as i observe that the plants not look so good compare i put it outdoor last time.
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Yeah, natural sun light is always the best for plants. Try to place it where it could receive more sunlight if you can but of course you must get something transparent to protect it from rain. :2thumbup:
I'm kind of worry about the algae on the moss, did you try doing something to get rid of them? |
Re: My first Cps tank.
The tank was just clear out due to the mosquitoes make it as a habit in my tank. This make my house alot of mosquitoes during night time.
Therefore no choice have to clear the tank....:crying::crying:..... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Aiyoh, so say. Put starving fish in the tank?
|
Re: My first Cps tank.
Sorry to hear that, I like your setup a lot, I hope you can keep it going and find a way against mosquitos.
The photos you took show that you had fish in the water, so how come there is still mosquitos? Or what you mean is that at night you see a lot of mosquitos swarming in the tank but of course no larvae because the fish eat them? My opinion: 1. If no larvae in tank, then that is not cause of your mosquito problem. Mossies might be attracted to your CPs, which is good, that would be food for your CPs and also keeps them away from people. 2. If have larvae in tank, then that is weird! 3. Worse case, try to move outdoors, where they can get more sun, and be happier. I know for a fact that my Filiformis and my Binata can catch mosquitos. TTFN Arvin |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Hi Arvin.
I know it a waste but no choice. There no larva inside my tank just the mosquitoes just flying around that area, which next to my baby room. i worry it will bite my baby so i need to clear it out. My rack already full with other Cps. No space for this tank. I already move the Cps back to the pot the tank i didn't throw still keep the U.Gibba. the Mosquitoes no more around that area. I will redo again the tank but no this big maybe smaller. then i will send pic again. thank you... |
Re: My first Cps tank.
Awww......sad to hear that like arvin said i really loved your tank setup.Well they're most probally attarcted to the CPs...
