Hi Ken, I used to go there before they started moving, and pop into those nurseries asking them for red burnt soil (hong shao ni) and they will tell you how much per bag. When u ask for the ones that are less powdery, they look at you funnily cos they assume ppl want to grow plants hence it shouldn't be gritty. But I can never find those like Cindy's over here - ie chunky and in huge lumps. Here they already 'pre-bashed' the baked clay into tiny pieces. So sieving and washing can cost you 1/3 to half a bag of soil and a trail of red clay down your yard!

Thanks harlem. Just trying out a different way to grow them.

Here are pics of the soil and of my long suffering bical before I repotted it into burnt soil - I didn't sieve that extensively so that the soil can hold more water.

And a sanguinea in burnt soil grown in an orchid pot in lowland Penang weather - pitchers average 9-10 cm from bottom of pitcher to the lid insertion point on the peristome (not counting the lid height). Another plant in Kajang gives me better pitchers but up to 12cm only.

Hi Poweramps

Hmm yeah i realised too that they started moving some of them said they move further down or something like that.So this soil thing must be sieved and wahsed or run through with water or something?? and is it low in nutrients which all neps want??I wanna get some of these to because i don't just wanna use LFS on all my neps i wanna try out something new.Normally hw much you buy per bag and how big is one bag or packet??So now where you get the burnt soil??

Anyways nice neps i like the bical doesn't look like it was suffering at all.Highland neps in LL conditions produce smaller pitchers generally speaking although some can take it or acclimate to it.

I get a bag at one ringgit, though prices might have changed. Yeah, I flush it with a lot of water to flush out the salts so that the soil becomes leached of nutrients. Kinda wasting water. But the overall cost is not as high as using LFS and it lasts longer. But watering schedule will be more frequent.

I might be wrong but these burn soil looks something similer to kledang hill red sand/soil.Neps are growing well on them.I think the rain probably washed the minerals on top of that soil cause it has been exposed to rain for a long time.Anybody tried the kledang soil on neps?

kentosaurs:you can acctually get those burn soil in most nursery.Usually around rm2 but in sg.buluh or kota damansara its rm1 only. Its just clay soil burn with some wood and sand.Thats why you can see the charcoals.People use it for normal plants.

Probably the burnt soil gives more air to the roots.Moss usually become compact after sometime and this means less air for the roots.

Hi Poweramps

Thanks for those infoes.Well LFS is difinitly much more expensive than one bag of red soil if my assumtion of its quantity in a bag is right.I buy normally RM 4 per packet of LFS but its much easier for me because i don't really have to flush down any sort of salt.

Thanks for sharing the info, poweramps. Looks like the "miracle soil" can work wonders !! I have good result using it on N. boschiana as well, the plant acclimatize to it's new condition after 2 weeks by sending new shoot with pitcher.

Burnt soil is partly fused/baked red earth that you get around Malaysia. Looks like it is working for a lot of Nepenthes. Thanks cpnut.

How do you ask the nursery guys in Malay??
I asked them today and they don't know what is that!

Thanx!
