mt kinabalu
my wife and i went to sabah mid october last year. of course, mt kinabalu is one place we wont want to miss. so, we went mountain climbing, ascend by mersilau and descend by timpohon. i would say that for plant enthusiasts, mersilau route is definitely better. lots of scenic points.
as we stayed in mersilau for 2 nights, we managed to visit the famous place where lots of rajah and burbridgea grow. they are everywhere and it is really strange, as all of them grow at an open area with lalang everywhere whereas before the river crossing, there were no pitcher plants at all, zilch. the secret apparently lies in the ultramafic soil. so, any die hard grower collect ultramafic soil for their plants? after the climb, the last thing i would want to do is to lug soil back!!:crying: so, all you nep lovers, you guys must pay a visit to the sacred holy ground of neps, your seceond hometown!!! :2thumbup::1thumbup: http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00002.jpg newly opened burbridgea http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...DSC00001-1.jpg they certainly love to pose.... http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00012.jpg another pose from the top model of the year.... http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00010.jpg the whole plant and it is huge... http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00013.jpg this fusca doesnt want to be left out.... http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00016.jpg rajahs are a bit elusive and shy, always hidden in bushes http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00014.jpg another newly opened pitcher http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00020.jpg let me see, ali, kentosaurs, edwardyeeks and some others lining up for a pose........just joking guys, no offence!!! http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00025.jpg the whole plant http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00009.jpg on clear occasions.. http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00018.jpg few seconds later....it is all gone!! http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00023.jpg rocks everywhere http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00011.jpg the view is to die for http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00021.jpg finally the alpinist, villosa. this one is hidden and yellow http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00027.jpg under the sun, it is blood red http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00004.jpg plenty of orchids for orchid lovers too http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...g/DSC00003.jpg some fungi hope you all like these pictures.... thanks for viewing. |
Re: mt kinabalu
You are really killing me here! The plants are simply gorgeous!
Makes you want to spend eternity among them plants. |
Re: mt kinabalu
Hi Soon
Wahhhhhhhh soooo nice......................We should plan a trip there :p Anyways HOW DID YOU KNOW I WAS THERE O.O....... Argh Ali and edward i told you someone will find out we're auditioning for this Ken |
Re: mt kinabalu
at least the tentaculata has hairs on the heads!! haha!!
well, one fine day when you all are up there, you might come across some decomposted skeletal remains, fertilising the plants. the obvious conclusion is some nep lover sacrificed his/her life to the plants!! better still, you guys may peer into some gigantic cups and see someone's finger or something floating in the fluid! wont be me though, my wife wont allow it!! sorry for digressing, just my imagination running wild. seems like only 3 of us (soon, ken and athene) are running havoc in this forum!! jobless, i guess! |

Re: mt kinabalu
Wow Soon...i always wanted to go there but my parents are just too strict.Hamata looks like a hybrid between tentaculata and edwardsiana..just joking.
Form 3 is really really difficult you guys and since i'm in the first class,we are the one to participate in competition awaiting for another 9 classes to do theirs though. So if you guys plan to go on a trip there, please invite me along. Soon, thanx for sharing.Love the pics. |

Re: mt kinabalu
The tentaculata are quite adorable, and I love the pic of villosa... I'm beginning to think it has larger fangs than hamata.. :p thanks for sharing, soon... :)
|
Re: mt kinabalu
Well even if it has larger teeth than a hamata still a hamata will look scarier.....Why? I guess because hamata has less "peristrome" meaning the teeths are not part of it.....When you look at it...It just looks like a pitcher with sharp long pointy teeth while for villosa it looks more like a odinary pitcher with larger teeth....Okays i have no idea what i'm even saying :p

Ken should be in school, you are supposed to be 'delivering' what ever that you delivers and I'm expected to pretend to be cooking, but hey, we only live once, if you don't live passionately, don't live at all *wink* Wonder if there's any antidote to what we have, 'Ceepeenitis'. |
Re: mt kinabalu
Simple jaw dropping! Now I have to add a trip to Mt. Kinabalu in my dream vacation list. Man, the N. burbidgeae and vilosa is just... wow! Thank you so much for sharing these pictures with us.
I also like the scenery shot you took in black and white. The composition, positioning of the trees and scenary is just perfect in the shot. |
Re: mt kinabalu
what, you guys havent been to your 'hometown' in mount kinabalu yet? i proposed you guys go there this CNY and bring some josssticks or whatever to worship the neps!!!
david, my shots are the blurry ones you see in the nepenthes section!! these are my wife's shots, most of them anyway!! the camera doesnt agree with me, i think. it has absolutely nothing to do with my (poor) camera skills. i hereby diagnosed you guys with nepenthitis, an progressive, deteriorating, incapacitating disease with no cure? or maybe there is a cure but you need to give me your most precious plants, starting with athene and her beautiful pot of burmanii!! once that is done, i will refer you to the consultant nepenthologist... hahaha. on a serious note, i am going to the other hometown of nepenthes on the other side of peninsular malaysia, sumatera. lake toba and its surroundings. wont be too much time for plants though, and my family will kill me if i turn it into a nep hunting holiday! but there is a flower and plant market in brastagi, who knows they sell inermis there? 'wink wink'. anyone got any suggestions for me to contribute further to nepenthes in the wild corner?? |
Re: mt kinabalu
Athene! Please give Dr. Soon your burmaii! I need the cure for my nepenthitis.
Wow! Please convey my appreciation to your wife on her photographs. Would be great if you could get her to join us (saying this with ulterior motive... so can enjoy more of her pictures). Better still infect her with nepenthitis... Ok, Athene... I change my mind. do not give the burmanii to Dr. Soon. Need to "poison" his wife into the forum. If your wife is infected, it won't be much of a problem to turn your trip to Sumatera into a Nepenthes hunting expedition. :) |
Re: mt kinabalu
Oh no soon, you're being too humble. I don't see any blur pics. your wife has steady hands. The "blur" was caused by water condesation on the lens.
( i use ps to manipulate one of the mt scenes pic, turned out ok ) |
Re: mt kinabalu
Hi,
nice pictures, the Mesilau Garden is truely fantastic. The guide told me the burbidgeaes kept there were transferred from a similar site not far away, but the rajahs and tentaculatas are natural, some plants having an estimated age of over 70 years!! Seedlings are very slow under that conditions and take 5 and more years to reach the size of a coin... The N.fusca you shot is in fact the rare hybrid of burbidgeae and fusca! I love that plant! greetings, Mathias |
Re: mt kinabalu
Seemed like a very worthwhile trip. Please, keep the pictures coming.

Re: mt kinabalu
robert, the blurry pictures of mine are in the nepenthes section actually. my wife's pictures are ok!
yeah, i was thinking of the fusca being a fusca x burbridgea as it looks different, a bit of both parents. i did not see a lot of fusca there around that site. this is the most prominent one. |
