Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Two months ago I tried to inspect my venus flytrap to see whether I can separate the mother plant into several small plants. However, during unpotting of the mother plant I accidentally pulled a not so healthy looking leaf but it has rhizome and root. As a result I decided to try my first leaf pulling experiment with that leaf. Anyway, I found that the mother plant has only one rhizome therefore a single plant.
The medium used for the leaf is new wet sphagnum moss in water tray. The pot is left outdoor under a clear plastic shade with exposure to direct sun light but protected from heavy rain. I noticed that it takes about 5 weeks to obtain growth of baby venus flytrap (1cm diameter size) from that leaf pulling. Below showns the progress of the propagation. Hope this is helpful to other CP friends. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...opagation1.jpg |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Congratulations! And thanks for the nice graphic layout, really shows not to give up too soon on the dying leaf!

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Congratulations! And thanks for the pics. I'll try this method.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Congratulations on your new plantlets and so far for me the best leaf propagation photo sets I have seen.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Nicely done and excellent step-by-step photos. In my experience, almost any piece of Dionaea plant with a little white on it (especially with any root) will start a new plant.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
How did you actually do it??Just pull it out? 'cause some of my friends want VFT

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hi Powersensor
Nice pics you've shown there really helpful.I have also did some cuttings and out of 5 only 2 suceeded well because most of them were unhealthy leaves since it droped about 3 weeks ago i took it out to take a little look a few days back and saw some growth yay soon will be getting 2 more VFTs. Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hi marvin1977,
What I did was first put the whole VFT pot into another larger pot filled with RO/rain water. With the water reaching the brim of the VFT pot. This helps loosen the medium. Then take out the pot and turn it upside down . The plant with the medium will just slip right out. I have to carefully remove the moss around the plant and try not to break the roots. With the whole plant exposed, pull your selected leaf downward. This is leaf pulling with some rhizome. I am not sure how other CP friends did to obtain their leaf pulling. Any simpler method? Anyway , I actually have three leaf pullings of different conditions as experiment. 1) Unhealthy leaf with rhizome and root (this is what posted above. Successful) 2) Healthy leaf with some rhizome (Still in progress. But looks like there is growth. Should be able to conclude in 1 month time) 3) Healthy leaf with mininum rhizome (Still in progress.Seems to be unsuccessful) Will post more updates when I have them. |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
wow. i love those pics. very useful. im definitely gonna try them after my exams.. 5 weeks is okay for a new plant! haha.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Good job :1thumbup:...U really show the nice method with the photo...very clear and easy understand...:1thumbup:
Will try this method when free...thanks!! |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
My cutting is starting to send out a tiny hair probally a root

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hahaha... congratulations. :1thumbup: It would be almost 100% success if the leaf you pulled come with roots attached.
Almost every part of the VFT could be used for propagation, I have successfully propagated with a stem, a flower stalk and even with a trap! But leaf pulling still the easiest way to propagate. Keep up the job! :1thumbup: |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Thanks for the information. Just a little update on my little experiment.
(2) The leaf pulling with rhizome only is also starting to have little VFT growing as well (about 1mm size). (3) Healthy leaf pulling with minimum rhizome seems to just rot away (no growth):(. But will just leave it alone . Maybe because my leaf pulling is place under direct sun (same location as Mother plant) is causing it to rot too fast before it could generate baby VFT. |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
My flower stalk is still green with no baby even after 1-2 week
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
My guess is it should take more than one month to at least show some growth. Just keep it moist and hope it does not rot too fast. Patience is the key here.
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Its not even rotting. It still as green as when I cut it.
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Even if the top half of the flower stalk cutting goes black, leave it. The cutting will, quite often, still produce a new plant.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
how old does the VFT flower?
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
thanks for the propagation photos....
Lucky I saw your posting, cos I alo got leaf attempts.... turned black I thought of throwing away liao, but see your pics I'll keep it till forever...hahaha.... hope my baby VFT comes out soon! |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hi , 2 days back i separated 1 VFT into 3 pieces. All with rizhome and also roots. Hope they can grow like your. Actually i tried the same method before last year. 2 out of 3 survived.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
So they need rizhome and less sunlight?
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Thanks for sharing this. Unfortunately my oldest VFT is 1 year old ++ (I bought it from Casey). That's mean I need to wait for 3 or 4 years before I can apply this technique.
By the way, one of my VFT seed is already germinated (https://forum.petpitcher.net/showthre...5045#post15045). I need to know what should I feed on that seedling since its traps will be so tiny... Thanks.... |

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Where is the trap?Under the skin of the seed?
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hi Marvin, I don't quite understand what you mean, can you explain it further more?
|
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
I think he means where is the trap? Still haven't emerge? BTW my akai ryu has produced small baby plantlets without me noticing until I saw some miniature traps when I was trimming my plants.

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hai Powersensor....
I've got a few Q for you...How do you plant the leaf?did you just placed the pulled leaf "ON TO" the growing media or partially plant the end of the leaf "IN TO" the media... Thanks for sharing... |

Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
Hi Zulteh,
The leaf is partially planted in the media (especially the white portion). We want to make sure that the moist media is always touching the leaf. You can pull some moss and place top of the leaf to hold it down firmly . |
Re: Propagation - leaf pulling with rhizome and root
You TRIM your Vfts??!!Anyway I tried leaf pulling and all three leaf rotted. They don't have any roots.Seems that Vfts can't use honey as rooting hormone.
