Hi Athene

Just to ask im not sure if i've missed out any threads of your nep pics but do you mind posting ummm some highland nep pics??? How do you keep them?

Ken

Amelie.Poulain 12th January 2009 02:57 PM

Re: Athene's 'sorry excuse of a' Growlist

I used to grow my highlands bagged & at a very shaded area.

Just last month I got a small glass chamber & transfered them into it. In the process of doing that, I lost a N. lowii, a N. tentaculata & a N. burbidgeae :( Thank god I still have other pots of them :) My N. x Lady Pauline also wilted the very next day, so I moved it back to the original place.

Other plants are doing okay in the terrarium, including the N. rajah. The ventricosa that was being very tempramental also thrive in it, producing lot's of pitchers & the pitchers are doubling in size almost every three days. The terrarium is lined with life sphagnum moss btw.

I plant my N. sanguinea, N. ramispina & some other highlands outdoor under the pergola & along the wall. They are doing great too, pitchers on almost every new leaves.

If you look at old postings here & at the old forum, you can see a lot photos of my plants.

I'll see if I have photos of the new setup, if I do, I post them here.

Re: My highland plants

Nice setup and nice plant, I'm guessing your terrarium is in an air-cond room?

Amelie.Poulain 12th January 2009 08:57 PM

Re: My highland plants

Robert, hahhaha... actually the terrarium is outside, definitely no airconditioning! It's in my porch, quite protected from direct sunlight.

NepNut 12th January 2009 09:37 PM

Re: My highland plants

oops... So humidity is the key...

Amelie.Poulain 12th January 2009 11:29 PM

Re: My highland plants

Yup, high humidity works miracle for me.

Even before the terrarium, I've been bagging all my new arrival in big bags, some even up to 4 months. My N. rafflesiana 'Giant Form' even produced a truly giant (in my book anyway) pitcher while in the bag.

It must be the location too, the bags are on the floor in front of the s/steel rack, facing inward to the house. And the tiles helps to cool everything, I guess.

kentosaurs 12th January 2009 11:34 PM

Re: My highland plants

Hi Athene

WOW beautiful pics LOVE IT....................Very nice work done there.....Proffesional hehehehe.........Anyways no cooling O.O i see....Well means they are kinda in lowland conditions?I use perlite as the bottom of the terrarium cos LFS im scared that algae will grow crazy and also fungus. But even using perlite a small section turned green cos its quite wet...Your rajah is 2 times bigger than mine :p mine is 3.5" with one pitcher bud which doesn't seem to be doing much.Anyways thanks for the pics.

Ken

Amelie.Poulain 13th January 2009 12:04 AM

Re: My highland plants

Ken, I got the rajah on Christmas day, via a bet won :)

Kudos to my kind benefactor, you know who you are :2thumbup: Next time we bet on a Hamata okay :wink wink:

I put lots of LSM at the base, they are also soaked in water, so far the setup is > than 45 days old, I haven't had any algae or fungus problem (touch wood!) with it. The same can't be said with the glass test-tube wannabe thingie with the cork cover. I'm seeing algae at the rim of the media!

kentosaurs 13th January 2009 09:52 AM

Re: My highland plants

Well once awhile i even have to take my neps out and then drained out the water from the perlite.....Perlite for me seems to attract less algae compared to LFS....But then it absorbes a lot of water that means i have to drain it about 1-2 times a month.A bet and you won a rajah hahaha.......And hamata next? Thats nuts :p

Ken,

No I won't sell, but I'd trade with a medium sized pitchering Hamata

Interested?

kentosaurs 10th February 2009 12:12 PM

Re: Athene's 'sorry excuse of a' Growlist

:D lol okays thanks...how bout me sticking some sharp chicken nails all over the peristrome of my N miranda and then later colour the reddish spots dark purple...And then you'll have a XL size male flowering hamata with 29cm pitchers :D If it doesn't continue to pitcher with those hamata teeths then well sorry you didn't grow them good enough :p

Shawn how doyou do it?

kentosaurs 4th March 2009 08:20 PM

Re: Athene's 'sorry excuse of a' Growlist

Hi Athene

Well theres always a way like

1st and best choice:Give some of them to me :p
2nd choice: Sell away your seedlings or plants..
3rd choice best of the best choice:GIVE A LOT OF MATURE NEPS TO ME!!!!!

Hahahaha i myself have a very little amount of space for growing plants and i'm already running out of space...

Re: Athene's 'sorry excuse of a' Growlist

A minor update 11 March 2009

Note : By the way, I only include plants that are out of their 'infancy' in this growlist, thus all plantlets have to wait for at least a few months before they are included here.

Nepethes plantlets which are notorious for dying after a few months under my care are also excluded until they have form some what a woody stem.
