Re: My first Cps tank.

Hi Edwin, both of these plants along with VFT require a dormancy period to really look there best. They will continue to grow for a few seasons without it but will eventually die. There is currently a post going in the VFT section about providing a dormancy period for VFT's. I will post about how to provide dormancy for Sarra's in the next couple of weeks.

Generally though these plants require a drier period with temperatures below 5 degrees. The easiest method to supply this is to put themin the fridge. As I said I will post in the next couple of weeks in the Sarra section.

I second everybody's comments so far Edwin - "Great Job"! It looks like 8-10 species in there and everybody looks quite happy together! Keep up the good work and post pictures again in a while!

Edwin, very nice setup. Congrats !

As for the dormancy ( when or if it happens ), I suggest that you just remove the dormant plants and place them elsewhere. Some of the plants will grow for a few years before becoming dormant, some sarracenias might be more dormant prone. It`s all part of the genetic structure of the plant which may make them dormant resistant or our environment which may somehow or other encourage the plants to remain vigorous.

I also call it luck. *smile*

Re: My first Cps tank.

Hi Edwin, one PLL light is definitely not enough for the plant especially VFT and sarracenia. Sarracenia stenvensii is not a good candidate in this tank I'm afraid as it is too tall, the hot bulb will burn the pitchers as it grows taller. Suggest you to get a S psittacina if you would like to have a sarra in there.
D intermedia (Cuba) can get very red if given sufficient of grow light, I saw it in David's place, so lovely.
I'm kind of worry when I first saw the fishes in the tank, will the minerals in the water harm your plants? :crying:
How long have you shifted the tank indoor?
Sorry if I'm being too direct.

Re: My first Cps tank.

Oh thanks for your infomation. Actually i just shifted for 4 days. On the lighting demand i not so sure. As for the sarra i will change it as i also notice it not suitable for this tank. For the fish inside the tank i dun think it will harm much on the plants previously i saw some larva in this tank i'm worried it will become best place for the mosquitoes breed. so i put some fish, as long as the fish not die i think it won't harm. For the D. Intermedia mine won't be so red even i put direct sunlight.
Thank you for your advice and comment. i will be very happy as you can give me some suggestion :1thumbup:. Anyway for the light how many watts do you think it enough and also what kind of light. Can PL be use or i need to change. Please give me some advice. thank you again :2thumbup:

Re: My first Cps tank.

What I meant 'harmful' is the waste from the fish, the mineral accumulated in the spahgnum moss will be harmful to CPs, and promote algae growth too. Oops... maybe I have been too worry... is the fish compartment has holes that allow the water to flow to the spahgnum moss? but i saw some holes on the plastic divider, but not sure there are holes on the lower portion.
I'm not too good in culculating the lumens, but I see your tank is quite dim, it need at least three 36w PLL bulbs. But again it still depends on how close the plants to the light. The hot air generated is the problem when you get more bulbs, you must also get a fan to blow away the hot air. Try to get also a small PC fan (with timer) to make some air circulation in the tank, or else algae will be your next problem.
Suggestion: Place some wood or rock will create more natural feeling, maybe some live sphagnum moss or some other mosses will help too. :2thumbup:
