Heatwave!

For those that are interested.
South Eastern Australia is in a 1 in 100 year heatwave. Here in Adelaide it was 44 C yesterday, 33 C last night and 45.7 C today. It forecast for this to go until at least next Tuesday. Some of my non CP are wilting over in the day even though I am watering them everyday. It over 50 C out in the sun :crying:

It's 42 her at Melbourne.Hope my plant's at home are fine......Don't wilt!!!Live for me!!!!!!!

Re: Heatwave!

Wow 44 C! 50 C! Hope your plants can cope, can't give much suggestions on how to help them.... maybe an electric fan with some kind of sprayer/mister in front to keep the temperature down at their peak? And maybe some kind of a shade?

We are now making shade brackets for shade net preparing for the summer. It is still relatively cool here in the Philippines.

Good luck!

Hi Khoas, where I am in Melbourne it was 45 yesterday. And expected to get hotter. I had a couple of Sarra that were wilting in the middle of the day despite sitting in 2 inches of water. I find it is the lack of humidity that hurts them. I have just moved as many plants as I can onto the ground/floor to try and provide some relief.

Khoas 29th January 2009 07:38 AM

Re: Heatwave!

It is good advice, strath76, about putting the plants on the ground. All my greenhouse and shadehouse plants are under shade. In the shadehouse the trays are rather large and on the ground. The floor is plastic at moment. The result is I get reasonable humdity after watering the CP and orchids. I only got two young sarra that seem to dying back. I actually losing cactii and succelents to the heat.
I actually off work today because of the heat, its been canelled today.

Re: Heatwave!

I know that Adelaide is usually haotter and drier than Melbourne is. This morning I called home at 9.30 to spray my plants down and it was 40 degrees. Have you got the strong dry Northerly blowing as well?

That will be the killer for my outdoor plants today. It also doesn't help to cool my little glasshouse.

Re: Heatwave!

Wow! 45-50 degrees! That's hot man! Talk about your plants, I woudl have problems functioning normally in these temperatures.

Re: Heatwave!

mother nature is unpreditable. we have plenty of rain since 5th jan 2009, temp cooling with lowest i noted 25.5C. we're still experiencing the wet monson but once by march it's over we get very warm weather and dry wind.º

kentosaurs 29th January 2009 12:07 PM

Re: Heatwave!

Well lucky for KL that we don't have dry or monsoon seasons caused its blocked off by the surrounding mountains or something......I guess march to april is the wetest part of the year for KL....

45-50 is just plain nuts...My plants already sulk at 37-38C

Re: Heatwave!

It is normal that my place is experiencing hot weather every JAN - MARCH.

my place recorded 43C, humidity 30-40% these few days at 2-3pm, have to stay home to spray water. Nite time also quite hot, it is 36C, but humidity come back to 70%.

I got to mist them 3 times a day to keep the humidity higher.

Khoas 29th January 2009 03:19 PM

Re: Heatwave!

So get to 40C + at your place regularly cbkhoon? The heat here is a dry heat, humidity is well below 10%.

No wonder the plants are wilting. That is quite low, the numidity I mean.

Khoas and Strath: That is one seriously hot spell you have there in Melb and Ade. I much prefer the weather in Sydney, there are cool breezes off and on even with the sun baking.
cbkhoon: Over here in my area the garden is simply facing the worst. When you stay out in the garden for more than 10 minutes your face starts to feel like you just shifted your face away from an oven. Almost every plant is suffering from the heat.

it's > 40C for the whole month already. Humidity range from 40-60 % during afternoon, it comes back to 60-80C at nite.

I mist them 2 times in the afternoon to keep them moist these few days because I am at home during the Chinese New Year week. Humidity climb up to 60% after I mist them.

You mean %?????

Anyways my humidity here is around 30-40% in the noon and the temps can sometimes reach 40's.....all thanks to global warming...At night its still quite okay here when its raining can reach 23-24C but if not its around 25-27C normally 25 at most times.....

the 60-80 shud be in %.... else all plants melt already

Re: Heatwave!

Another day, another 42 C, Worst thing is not the day temperature but the night temp. Wednesday night temp was 33.9 C, a record for Adelaide. Last night was around 33 C again.
I don't know if I have enough rainwater to get through this heatwave. Fellow ACPS members have run out of rainwater and been forced to the dreaded Adelaide tap water. It mean id don't rain in the next month they start have plants starting die due salt build up.

strath76 30th January 2009 11:46 AM

Re: Heatwave!

I wouldn't wish the Adelaide tap water onto anyone let alone plants. Another 45 degree day at the moment. i think the humidity is almost up to 10%. Most of my plants are doing OK with misting but I was out all morning and my Catopsis is looking very sad.

Yes. Not very common here from my knowledge. I don't know anyone that is using it.

Khoas 30th January 2009 02:55 PM

Re: Heatwave!

I do know couple of people in the local society do use it. Yes you can use R/O water in fact Heliamphora love it. The problem is the waste water involved, there is 7 - 9 litres waste to 1 litre of pure water.

I hate to be in Australia now. Remember sitting in my room trying not to move to keep cool. Guys, if you don't know, you'll get one tone darker even you're walking in the shade. Not a pleasant experience.

Donny/Adam, Any cold change coming your way? My heart goes out to you two and also Sean.

Re: Heatwave!

i remember the boss of YG told me that most CP prefer very clean water, perhaps RO or distilled water... I have been doing this since i back from last cameron trip. I can see my sarras love it..

Thanks Ben. We are getting a cool change in Melbourne. It is only supposed to be 37 tomorrow. I might have to get my jumper out. Just spent the last 4 hours with no power to top off the hot weather.

Yes, match in the longest match record for the Aussie Open.
It going to be mere 40 C today and tomorrow dropping in the high 30 C next week. Hopefully the night temp drop below 30 C so I get some sleep.
Ben, after mid 40 C it is cool change, you do notice it. After the last few days 40 C feel almost nice.
I wish I say for my plants. I know I lost a least one Neps, why is it always the expensive ones?

Re: Heatwave!

Looks like Australia had a cooler weekend. The heat in Malaysia is also bad, very hot here. I think most outdoor growers are affected by the intense heat in Malaysia. A side benefit for me, Red Spider Mites appeared.

Khoas 4th February 2009 07:01 PM

Re: Heatwave!

Well South Australia is due for a cool change, we had 6 days of 40 C (equal the record set in 1908) + and another 3 days over 35 C. It has caused several deaths which is rather unusual for us. Victoria suffer a large fire east of Melbourne which destroyed 29 houses. The forecast for the Vics is another 43 C in a couple of days. This damn heatwave forecast to move into NSW.
Meanwhile in Ingram in Nth. Queensland is suffering a massive flood and there are reports of Mr. Saltie swim down the town streets.

plantlover 4th February 2009 10:23 PM

Re: Heatwave!

OMG!!! Crazy weather. BTW who/what is Mr. Saltie.

Re: Heatwave!

Bactrus, why side benefit Red spider mites? I think I might not understand this :( (by the way did you get my last pm?)

As of now here in Manila, still quite cool, but judging from the heat waves you guys are having, I am going to prepare for the worse. Hot months here starts March, hopefully our shade will be ready within the month. Hope the rest of your plants will survive and recover soon Khaos.

It's amazing that while we are experiencing a heatwave up here in Penang, it's raining every day down in Kuala Lumpur!

Words around town is the heatwave will be over come Thaipusam holiday. I pray hard it's true.

Hi

Well hope your CPs will do okay throughout the heatwave to those people in aus......And yeah in KL here this week has been hot during the days but out of a sudden it all turns dark windy and starts raining on the late evenings...I always get wet on my way back home from school haizz...

Re: Heatwave!

Donny, I can imagine a chaotic scenario if all those incidents happened within one state.

Arvin, Red Spider Mites are bane to plants. Orchids are especially susceptable to them. Have poisoned most of my plants. Even trying out on Droseras. Sprinkled one pinch of carbofluran on my D tokaiensis. Wonder if it will survive.

alcran 5th February 2009 09:53 AM

Re: Heatwave!

Mites are terrible. My hamata, densiflora, and spectabillis all were infected by mites. The mites killed the hamata and the other two were weakened. They were killed by minor stresses because the mites had weakened them so much.

kentosaurs 5th February 2009 10:00 AM

Re: Heatwave!

Well for those red spider mites under my desert rose leaves which they pratically killed all of the plants leaves twice i figured out why could this be happening and had no idea until i look at the bottom it was like sweat holes everywhere and the top of the leaves were discoloured and so i just take a tissue and swipe them off later on the next few days keep spraying water under the leaves and they all disspaeard..

I am going to try CO2 Method... maybe today if I have time, will report back when there is any improvement. This is against scale insects though. Maybe bactrus you can try it yourself too?
