General knowledge about Ping.
Hi everyone. I got a flowered P.Tina a few days ago and was wondering anyone can provide a general care for this species like light, water, dormancy etc... Greatly Appreciate ur help

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
it is an horticol hybrids
normally a calcareous substrate like their parent a very good light but not inevitably the sunshine watering all the 15 days or on a month ( by capillarity ) actually in dormancy no watering , keep just the substrate slightly wet . jeff |

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
Our full sun is too hot for Mex. Pings. I suggest you give it 70 % shade. You can let it to sit on water tray. But the water level must be low. 1 cm should be ok.

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
yes in shade or with a morning sunlight ( always less hot here in europe)
for me do not keep the mexican ( or hybrids) ping stagnate in the water , between 2 watering always keep the substrate dry . and make to them a dormancy jeff |

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
I use for all my mexican ping ( eventualy the hybrids ) a mineral substrate ( the base : clay and limestone) just to have a good draining , for them the air hygrometry ( 70-80%) is also more important .
sphagnum moss ( hydroponic substrate) or blond peat is just a horticutural substrate for the hybrids or some others , attention to the rot with this substrate . to have a dormancy on the mexican keep them from 10 to 12 °c ( may be difficult in your country) from november to may often in dry condition for the hybrid you can see the dormancy when they reduce their leave and when they become succulent ( often without 'mucilage' ) jeff |
Re: General knowledge about Ping.
I am using 2 part perlite : 1 part sphagnum moss as substrate. No dormancy since 2008.

No. If heavy rain.

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
what species or hybrid ? x'Florian , debbertiana - jaumavensis - ehlersae have you some flower ?
for me it is a hydroponic substrate , 'in situ ' the substrate is quite different *biggrin2* the dormancy is necessary for a lot of plant , otherwise they would wither . here for the mexican ping the succulent stage are necessary for them like 'in situ' some of mine in mineral substrate actually not in dormancy http://pinguicula.free.fr/ping2010bis.JPG jeff |
Re: General knowledge about Ping.
Got a question. I put Ping in full light but the leaves like not sticky anymore to trap insects. I saw a few ants running around happily on it like mocking at my face :glare:. Can it due to strong like that like dry up the sticky substances? And the leaves look kind of wilted as well mayb not enough water? (i do put in water tray though)
Here is the pic (shld hv posted earlier sry ) http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...3/P1010724.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...3/P1010750.jpg |
Re: General knowledge about Ping.
They are P. ehlersiae. I have P. 'Florian' and P. jaumavensis as well. Still got no flower. I used to try 100% inorganic media. But the plants were not doing well.
I think tropical climate won't trigger Mex. Pings to dormant. At least for my plants. Let's see how they doing after several years. Quote:

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
a nice x'Tina':1thumbup:
I am OK with PISCESILIM keep it in shade , but also the 'mucilage' often is the result to the temperature difference's from day to night, it is also a lead PISCESILIM in your country What are your outside temperature mini ? have you the possibility to keep these ping between november to may in 10-12°c ? jeff |
Re: General knowledge about Ping.
The lowest temperature is 23 °C during the raining season. But usually is 25-26 °C. The maximum temperature is 36-37 °C. I can't provide temperature as low as 10 °C.
My P. gypsicola and P. 'Florian'. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2...m/DSCN9729.jpg |

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
nice Jeff!!
why is all your plants look so marvelous?? i love the first pot on the left of the first row the most.what ping is it? |
Re: General knowledge about Ping.
Wow, Nice pings you have there. Hope I can have one soon. :)

Re: General knowledge about Ping.
merci
for me the substrat and their cultivate condition are the raison . here it is the last period outdoor , after all are in door in dormancy ,dry or lightly wet. all these specie flowered not in the same time , a lot of them have 5 years . in the second picture the plant in the first raw at left is a P .ehlersae "tolontogo" jeff |
