Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Greetings! David and Members,
I am Aaron Lee from Penang, Malaysia. I happened to come across the link that led me to this forum at the MAC forum. I am a naturalist and behaviourist and am interested in observing how living organism strive for survival and how evolution by natural selection works. I hope I can learn much about carnivorous plants here and I am planning to get my first vivarium started out. Wish me luck. Best Regards Aaron Lee |

Thank you, rsivertsen and Casey.
I suppose both of you are senior members of the forum and possess carnivorous plants yourself. If you don't mind I'd like to have some information about the plants such as the requirements and the husbandry and the maintenance and etc as I am new and pretty ignorant about them. I thank you both in advance. Hopefully we could meet up someday somewhere in Penang and share our interests. Best Regards Aaron Lee |

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Aaron,
If you Eric does not have VFT at the moment, you can contact Fauzi as well. Fauzi carries VFT "jaw tooth". But I will be surprise if Eric does not have them. he also have rare stuff like Heliamphora. And casey is just being very humble. That's just him and he is a great guy and friend. The Senior Member position he has is an elected position. :) |
Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Thank you Plantloer and David. Those are informative threats and are very much utility to me. Thank you very much. How do I contact Fauzi

I am interested to know if the plants could be sold in the form of seeds? If it's a yes, how much do they cost? And how much is the whole adult plant? |
Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia

Fauzi didnt sell plant seeds. But, you can try to get it from famous website. Like www.triffidpark.com.au. On top of that, there is few forumer that selling seeds as well. 1 of them is Khoas. You can try PM him. For plant... Assume that you refer to VFT that Fauzi have. He have typical VFT, red dragon, red trap and shark teeth. All of them cost rm10 ~ 25. Depends on their size. For newbie, it is recommend to get plant, instead of seeds, because, it take ages to grow adult!!! Even me, sometime give up on them. |

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Hello Aaron. Most nurseries in Penang carry nepenthes, which I think is good to start with. But if you are looking for some specific species, it may be difficult to source. VFT seems to be seasonal. Nurseries have them, but not all time. I did not visit Eric before though.

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
for your information, i just made a call to Eric, he is not open today, he will have a show at Queensbay from 5th Dec onwards showing bonsai plants but he said he will bring some nepenthes there too.

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Hi aaron86.. welcome to PP! :) Sorry from the late welcome.. which part of PP are you from..? I'm from the mainland.. I agree that eric's place is a good start to look for CPs. Other more common nepenthes to start with and easily available in most places (even supermarkets!) is Nepenthes gracilia, albomarginata, ampullaria, rafflesiana, ventrata, Miranda etc. The best place and time to buy CPs is the Penang Flora Fest which is held every June/July at the botanic gardens..

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Oh, and there's going to be an orchid show held in front of Queensbay Mall (car park) from 6-13 December. There are bound to be stalls selling other plants as well, should be a good place to look out for CPs. :)

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Oh!! Really? The person who attended to me was an old uncle. I wonder if he's Eric. I've actually posted some pictures of the pitcher plant I bought from him on this forum but I don't know how to link it to that page. If you could see the pictures kindly provide me the scientific and the common names please.
Thank you for your offer of getting me some plants. I am interested but I would like to get some flytraps. I wonder if you could help get those. BEst Regards Aaron Lee |
Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
Greetings Aaron. the old uncle is probably Eric's tanjung bungah stall shop keeper. By the way, just saw your first pitcher plant photos under the profile page album. Nice plant you have there but I think your media is too dry (always keep it moist).
Interesting choice of looking for venus flytraps to try. Welcome to the world of carnivorous plants . By the way, I am from Penang island. If you need any advice on CPs, feel free to ask. This forum has loads of interesting posts and helpful forumers. Have a nice day. Cheers, Kelvin |

Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
aaron, your nep looks to me like rafflesiana (green/nivea form)... But not 100% sure though.. The leaves look like my raff. Can anyone else help confirm ID..?

Hi Kelvin, Thanks for the welcome and the comments. But I think the medium in the picture is wet. I actually removed the medium that came together with the plant and changed it with new sphagnum moss because the one, which came with the plant, was covered by mould/algae. I flooded the whole pot with RO water and then allowed the water to drain out from the bottom. Then I fiiled the plate with water, which then I mounted the pot on top of it before I left it under the sun for photosynthesis. I just came back from home. The medium is still relatively wet, however the water in the plate is totally dried up. I suppose the water has replaced some of the water lost from the surface of the medium. The only concern I have is whether the rain water will in any way affect the plant if it rains. Best Regards Aaron Lee |
Re: Greetings from Penang, Malaysia
your plant could be a hybrid that contain Nep. Kuchingesis or Rafflesianna..I dun see it is a pure rafflesiana.
