Sarracenia flower

Hi everyone

Just a quick question.....I have been having my S.mitchelliana for sometime now and i bought it as quite a mature plant....And about half a year later (now) i still don't see any signs of flowering on the main plant.....The plant has already produced pitchers almost twice the size of its pitchers when i first got it.....So anyone knows when they flower?

Hi Ken,

Sarra's flower after dormancy. You wont see any flowers until your plant either goes into dormancy itself or you initiate it. Whilst they need dormancy to flower, it does not always gaurantee you a flower. Sometimes they just resume growth. I only had one plant flower this year due to a mild winter here. Your conditions make it a bit harder to ensure the plants go dormant. If you search through previous threads you will see one I posted about creating dormancy.

My sarracenia also flowered 3 months ago without any dormancy.I guess it was the overhelming bugs that eaten by sarracenia but i may be wrong. The flower is still there although the petals have dropped.Such a strong flower.

Re: Sarracenia flower

Kenneth, you should be patient. My sarracenias haven't flowered at all yet too. In our tropical country, the period of dormancy and flowering is more confusing and random than in the temperate countries. This is because our country does not have any of the four seasons, therefore there is no definite time when the plant will flower. It will depend on the condition you give it or the plant will simply flower itself suddenly. It also happens in dormancy of sarras.

Amount of light is also important. Sarras flower well in strong light. Although I think that strong light isn't really an issue in your garden.....

Cheers

Re: Sarracenia flower

What Adam said is true. In temperate countries, sarracenia flower after their dormancy. But in the tropic that's another story.
What Edward said is actually what happening in growing sarracenia and VFT in our country, we don't have distinct four season to trigger the plant to flower or to go dormant. Normally sarra will flower during cool rainy season like now. Mine flowering now. But some go into dormancy instead.
Pity the plants, imagine how confused they are in the tropic.

Re: Sarracenia flower

That cannot be a pure flava. Flava has yellow flowers. Your plant could be a very complex hybrid with a red flowered sarr like ruba. Like (flava x ruba) crossed again with flava several times.
