Hoya sp

Anybody here collects these vines?

I got the common ones on the market (white flowered hoya- H. carnosa me thinks, maroon flowered one, variegated one with pink flowers, long-leaved ones with tiny maroon flowers).

Am looking to add more varieties.

Hi lisham,

Yep, I'm hooked on them as well! There's a couple old post on the 'old forum' called 'Hoyas Ho" and "Hoyas more" where I posted some pictures and we had some discussions. See if you can still view it.

hi lisham, yep, i'm hooked on to them as well. i find them very very easy growers and they thrive under total neglect!

ps: lisham, was i supposed to send you some drosera cuttings?

I am growing hoya seedlings. Only about 7cm.

lisham 5th August 2008 11:49 AM

Re: Hoya sp

Hmmm so what kind eh, the ones that u guys and gals been keeping?

I like them so so much because they thrive under neglect, it's kind hard to purposely not to water plants... And secondly, it gives my neighbor a scare because of the fragrant flower is always extra fragrant at night....

Am looking particularly for Hoya imbricata and Hoya imperialis but anything Hoya also can....

Btw, a big clump of Dischidia imbricata fell off a dead branch at a waterfall in Langkawi...

If everything goes well, I might be giving them away when it's confirmed they'd survive...

Keep your eyes on this posting Hoya and Dischidia lovers!

The thread I have found in the old forum and transferred here. Under "non-canivorous plant"- Hoya Ho!

Lets see if the seeds germinate.

I managed to get myself some new Hoya and Dischidia... Can anybody ID these plants (just by looking at their leaves) ?

The link : http://dcancerian.blogspot.com/2008/...is-enough.html

Re: Hoya sp

Well Lisham, The first one 'might' be H. nummalarioids but can't really tell from your pictures... if so, it has nice small white flowers usually with a red center and blooms heavily all at once (lots of pendicles at one time).

Second one looks like what we call "lipstick plant", not a hoya but related I think.

I believe you are correct on the H. lacunosa. Not many others with that alligator skin type leaf. Nice small very fragrant flowers.

Next one could be anything! I have a couple that look similiar but think you will have to wait for it to flower to ID correctly.

Here's a link to 'Stemma", a great little periodical that comes out a few times a year. http://www.stemmajournal.com
They just started putting it online. Well worth the download! Their other links on the homepage (in black banner along the top) are also very good. The Thai hoya site, while mostly in Thai script, is still worth a look as most are named in Latin and I saw a lot of great photos with IDs there.

Good luck!

Re: Hoya sp

Thanks man for the link! I went back earlier today and saw what I think could be something new... Perched on a mangosteen branch... a hoya with rounded leaves... Sighs...

Anyway... Lots and lots of Dischidia Imbricata fell down due to the stormy weather in Langkawi... Will be posting the pix soon...

Thanks again....

Hello guys and gals...

1 of the un-ID-ed Hoy is flowering... Will post the pix when they finally bloom.

I got another 1 from Lubuk Semilang in Langkawi...

Can anybody ID this for me... The leaves got patterns and ragged edge...

I agree, that's what it looks like from the leaf but the picture is a little "fuzzy". Could you take a couple more; one close up of leaf (top and profile, if possible) and one or two of the whole plant, and also post some pics when it's flowers open? I think the spelling is Hoya finlaysonii, without the first "a", but check it out.

Shawn... You're right!

It's does look like H. finlaysonii! It also looks abit like a Hoya with drying leaves as well... (scratch head!)

Hmmm... We'll just wait until this particular specimen grow a bit.

Once again thanks...

I hope it is...

Waaa... I'm getting good at this Hoya thingy... Really so badly yearns for Hoya imperialis...

Anyway... Thanks again...

Hey lisham, I have a couple H. imperialis (deep red)...made some cuttings last month but they are already spoken for by others. Shouldn't be more than another month or two until I can make at least one more. It'll take another month to root up after that. Another forum member has spoken about sending me a cutting of one of his. Keep posting and perhaps someone will beat me to it! How is the mail/customs where you are? I root Hoyas in sphagnum, some places they say "ok" others "no way"!

Hi again Lisham,

Hmmm, I just had a wild collected cutting from last year bloom for the first time and it looks very similiar. Your picture was a little blurry so I can't tell 100%. I thought mine was one of three species (Verticillata/acuta/parasitica) but sent pictures to the 'experts' and they came back with something totally different; H. ridleyi!
Here are a few shots, see if it is the same;

By the way, yes that 3rd one is a dischidia, can't recall the species just now, but it IS 5 am!

Re: Hoya sp

Errr... I'm not very sure... It looks like yours... Plant is almost the same I think... It looks like H. verticillata too... And almost like H. parasitica too... And H. acuta as well (Smack loudly on forehead) I tot it can be identifiable after if blooms... More headache actually... Hehehe...Will post better pix later lor... Langkawi is raining cats, dogs and pickup trucks at the moment....

Hee, hee, hee! Sometimes when the flowers finally form and open we find that it's still just as confusing! The three species I mentioned all have a very similar look to their flowers. The plant I posted pictures of has longer corona parts than any of the pictures I could find of the three. (The outer star form is called the corolla and the inner, smaller star is the corona...I believe!) Good luck, I'll be waiting for your pictures when the rains let up. :crying:

Thanks,

Re: Hoya sp

Cyrtoceras floribundum, most likely! There's 3 Hoya that look almost exactally the same except for the angles of the tip of the flower. H. Javanica is one of the others and the last escapes me now. Look up a thread called "Hoyas HO" where there are some close-ups of the flower...I think I also posted a link to David Liddel's explanatory photos there. Of course it might have been on a thread on the 'old' Pet Pitcher site!
This is an easy grower, but unlike most hoyas prefers soil and grows as a bush not a vine. It seeds heavily (mine anyway, with a pod or 10 every few months). Just catch the seed before it blows away!
Good luck with it.

Hi.. i'm kinda new here so hahah...? wads Hoya? Is it a type of carniverous plant? i feel so stupid lolx!

shawnintland 22nd October 2008 12:47 PM

Re: Hoya sp

Hi xmagicsZ, Nope, Hoyas are not carnivorous but some of us like them anyway! They are usually vining plants that tend to have really nice balls of flowers which 'usually' have an amazing fragrance (often only at night). This particular Hoya is not a good example of the species as it is quite different from the 'normal'.

Please do not feel stupid when asking a question here. There are no stupid questions here. :)

Locally rescued. The vine was growing on some old rain tree by the road that was cut down for some power line project... :D any idea on what is it?

I have 2 extra rooted cuttings available...
