Re: L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand
Site 3 : N. mirabilis & N. gracilis
This is the 3rd site. Different type of forest, more undergrowth on the forest floor as sunlight can penetrate better with sparse canopy. Site 3 : Habitat http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/1...te3habitat.jpg mirabilis-01 http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6559/mirabilis01c.jpg mirabilis-02 http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/530/mirabilis02z.jpg mirabilis-03 http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/3024/mirabilis03.jpg mirabilis-04 http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6730/mirabilis04.jpg mirabilis-05 What a beauty !!:wub: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/7135/mirabilis05.jpg mirabilis-06 Sorry for the blurry pic. I've noticed some N. mirabilis from this location have slightly squatter/fatter lower pitchers. Perhaps it's a link to the evolutionary path of N. globosa "Viking" ?? http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/8749/mirabilis06.jpg mirabilis-07 http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/366/mirabilis07.jpg gracilis-01 http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/1331/gracilis01.jpg gracilis-02 http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3131/gracilis02.jpg gracilis-03 http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/9974/gracilis03.jpg gracilis-04 http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/5788/gracilis04.jpg gracilis-05 http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7835/gracilis05.jpg gracilis-06 http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/9188/gracilis06.jpg Thanks for viewing, sorry for the long long post even it's just for some common L/L neps but I felt it's important for me to document and share among fellow enthusiast. I have a strong feeling it's just a matter of time before what I saw will be all gone in the name of "human development". :crying: |

Hi,
Thank you for sharing picture, really nice picture ! |
Re: L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand
Just some update, after reviewing "Pitcher Plant of the Old World" Vol 1 by Steward McPherson, I think the N. thorelii that I have observed could have been the "undescribed" N. kongkandana.

Re: L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand
Hey Jon! Great to see you back on the forum. Finnaly got your internet access up in the steaming tropical jungles of Sabah eh.
Man! I just love mirabilis-05 aka hot-hot lips! Do you guys think that some of them might be hybrids or thorelii? Gracilis-4 is a very beautiful specimen... all red on its picthers. That's red colour and not maroon right? Are all the pitchers on this plant red in colour? I know TS will go gaga when he sees this red gracilis. :) |
Re: L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand
You're very much welcome Jon... if you're in Sabah now, I envy you more.... *biggrin2*
David, Ya, gotta love the mirabilis "hot2 lip", this form of mirabilis will have red/maroon lower pitchers, the uppers will be the "hot lip". For Site 3, as far as I can observe, there's only N. mirabilis, N. gracilis and it's hybrid (only 1 specimen as far as I can find). I also love the red/maroon form of N. gracilis, there's only a few plants that produce this kind of pitcher and all the pitcher have similar coloration. Maybe can ask Dr. Charles to check if whether the N. thorelii from Site 1 is in fact N. kongkandana . That will be so exicting... *biggrin2* |
