Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Nice plants guys!
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
two years back i was in cactus valley and bought one pot of cephalotus. it was the only pot left. the pitchers were about 1 inches in length and there a bout fifteen to twenty of them. it cost me rm38 if im not mistaken.
when i brought it down to pj, it died. the whole thing turned yellow even though i provided it partial shade. so, hopefully you guys with much younger cephalotus can get them growing properly! :2thumbup: |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
wah! nice cephs guys! so envious..
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
guys, we gotta really concentrate on caring for our new `****es`. in about 2 weeks time, i might change the media to peat / sand. i don`t quite like the idea of pure lfs & especially if the ceph is placed in the garden where it gets full rain.
malowie : yes, i bot the ceph last time too for rm38. mine lasted 6 months. and would have lasted longer if i didn`t let the media become too moist during raining season. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
So, what is the best mixed for them ar? I read the old post that made by others, and summarized as below
Media : peat + petlite/sand with 2 : 1 portion. Water : Water it once the surface of media is dried, dont use water tray Light : Put in shade, Tarence put them in full sun Pot : ceramic pot to cool down the pot. Humidity : dont need to bother much Temperature : dont too hot Please correct me if im wrong... |

Our challenge now is to acclimatise them from camerons temperature to KL temperature. I am placing mine in the garden area where it is the coolest and make sure i wet the garden nightly to bring down the temperature. I worry if it rains too much coz the LFS will become too wet. if can, protect the outdoor ceph from rain. no direct sun. bright area will be fine & good air movement. in about 2 weeks, or when i see new growth, i will change the media to peat / sand. Cindy says to be careful of the roots as they break very easily. my ceph from cindy gets morning sun only. but it is direct hot sun. it gets rains but the water drains thru the medium. i don`t like using LFS 100% as it becomes soggy outdoors ( Cindy places her LFS cephs indoors i think ) and retains too much water. KC, we go step by step. keep the fella alive first, then worry about the media. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Tarence, got it...
Will be patient and wait and see... Must take photo of the cephalotus from every angle, else, im worry that Im will not realize the growth of plant... Because, I didnt spent much time to seeing them. :crying::blush: |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
LFS in air-con room where it is cool, then it is fine. But like I told Tarence, if the temperature remains 28C and above then start worrying. The roots rot very quickly and once that happens, nothing you do can save the plant.
So keep the humidity as high as you can but with good ventilation. Amongst other taller plants in a windy area helps. And allow the top of the LFS to dry out a little before watering and no water tray. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Very cute plants. So dissapointed. Can't find any CP(other than typical VFT and miranda and ventrata) in Cameron Highland. No ceph or ping in Cactus Valley.

Cindy dear, think you need to explain more clearly the sentence above. LFS in aircon room is ok bcoz...........water evaporates faster in aircon or the roots are cool in aircon.....? outdoors, it gets too hot so the roots would be affected & rot ? would using peat / sand assist outdoors ? most of us grow our cephs outdoors with the exception of david and mebbe edmund if he gets experimental........ |

Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Higher temperatures seems to encourage the bacteria/fungus/virus to thrive and cause root rot.
When grown outdoors, try and keep the pot from direct sunlight. During summer in Australia, the plants all die down to nothing and regenerate from the rhizomes during autumn. So unless you are prepared for the top growth to go botak...then try to keep the plants cooler in our weather especially during the hot months. But with the recent rain, I think "summer" is over. Peat/sand, LFS/perlite would both be fine outdoors. But if under the rain, the more loose the media is, the better. Pine bark is good for larger plants because the drainage is better. LFS/perlite has to be used loosely i.e. when potting up the plant, don't compact the media. I use coarse sand which is 3-4mm per grain. Another tip about watering, for clumps like yours, don't water the Cephs. Water the media and don't let the water don't touch the plants. Otherwise, when water is caught inbetween the pitchers, fungus can grow very quickly in warm conditions. I have all my established plants on mounds of media. So even when I top water my Cephs, the water runs off very quickly and does not accummulate at the centre of the plants. Don't let my Neps see this...my fav CPs are Sarracenia and Ceph. And if I can afford it, the next would have to be a Darlingtonia. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
folks, i think we may have to protect our new cephs from rain in case it rots.
for my case, since i am using multi tier rack, i will place my ceph below a sheet of glass placed on the higher rack level. at least until it stabilises. watering, as suggested by cindy, will also be cautiously done to prevent rot. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Just to add in case there is any misunderstanding...
Cephs love water. Just that the water needs to be constantly moving and not stagnant. If they are watered daily and the water flushes through their pots, they are very happy. :1thumbup: So the media needs to be quick draining if the plant is left outdoors under the rain. But during the dry season, mealybugs are quick to attack the rhizomes if the Cephs are kept too dry. Well, I learnt it the hard way and lost some plants recently. |

Do you think it will work if we grow ceph hydrophonically. I saw this system in a nursery in cameron highlands where they grow vegetables. Maybe build something like this but add ceph media in there. Here's a diagram that I've done up in word doc. WHat do you think? can work ahhh... Attachment 206 |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Maybe aeroponics too?
The problem is, we don't have excess "trash" plants to try. Each Ceph is so precious. I even save any leaf that I accidently break off the plant while removing dead pitchers. I have got a few ****es this way. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
If im not wrong, my ceph is producing new pitcher shoot and pitcher is still small. I will consider 'temporary' keep them survive if pitcher is forming successfully.
Now, it is siting in the most cooler place in my garden. (same place where I germinate my gammae and sundew seeds). I think the others way to cool down the pot and media is put the pot to the others same size pot. Air between pots will act like a jacket to media. My ceph LFS still wet since I got it from Tarence. And I never water them yet. |

Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)

Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Hi there. Tarence forget to thank you for fetch the plants. It look great and nice. But recently quite busy. i seldom view that plants :crying:
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
How is everyone`s cephalotus doing ? I shall be repotting mine this weekend coz the original LFS media looks quite pathetic & has remained WET from the day i got it.
Plan Gently lift off the CP from the media. Replant to slightly bigger pot. Medium will be using course sand, perlite & mebbe 10 % peat moss. Reality see how first. might chicken out. heheh. scared die. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Mine is still in the s. moss. Still looks good. I just place it in my terrarium and did not touch it since. Only pouring water into the media. Actually not much changes or new growth. Not sure if I want to repot. Hmm, maybe I wait for you to repot first... let your plant be the "guinea pig" for us ok... haa, haaa, haa...

Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
I repotted all my Cephs last week because they are still affected by the root mealies. The plants were removed, sprayed with contact insecticide, rinsed, soaked in systemic pesticide and potted up. Other than the loss of 1-2 leaves or pitchers, they have begin to put up growth within a week. The catch is, all my plants already have rhizomes at least an inch long. And the thickness is about 1/2 to 1 cm. They are cuttings which are 1-2 years old.
YG's Cephs are likely to be from TC. I am not sure if they will have a good strong rhizome. From what I have seen with the TC plants I had earlier, the base is a lot of thin roots instead. So repotting is a real risk. What I would suggest is to remove the top layer of sphagnum moss and replace it with peat/sand. That would keep the crown drier without upsetting the roots as well as cutting back on any infection as the moss is the cheap one from China which may have all sorts of mould. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
A timely piece of advice Cindy coz i haven`t repotted them yet. thx. i`ll probably do that but i`m guessing that the whole pot is full of the low quality LFS so the bottom section might attract all sorts of unwanted pests as well....
i see how first. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
yo yo yo, any chance for me to get the Cephalotus?
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
As far as i know , i think the chance a bit less since all member do not collect many quantity . Properly you can order from oversea. but the cost is $$$$
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
howz our YG cephs doing ?
alas, i haven`t touched my ceph`s medium yet....but the growth seems to be pretty good so far. it gets morning sun from 8 a.m. for about an hour. Wish i had bought more from YG then but I was so broke. *Dream-mode* : should have bought at least 6 pots from YG for my own pleasureable CP gardening. |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
Mine still good. Some new leaves and traps but growth is very slow. No pitchers turn brown yet. Still in sphagnum moss and in my 1-feet terrarium.
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
do not know why facing some reply problem.
I own two post of ceph. One of the pot have not luck and the whole plant was pull out by "something". i was so shocked when the time. i have been forced change the medium for that. some pithces turn to brown and gone. But so far, i think the plant is still growing. Pray for my ceph...~~~ |
Re: Cephalotus from YG (MAHA)
I had repot them using peat moss + perlite. Separated them to few patch and planted in 2 pots. Some of pitcher turn brown and gone. But, So far, suppose ok gua...

Here is how my cephalotus looks like. When I repot it, I successfully separated it to 3 patches. What you see is those left. The others patch is dried out, because it is drop to land:crying:
