guys....no need of arguing...it is just the way how we takes things in our hand.

there are pros and cons of sending plants bareroot or with media (pot) attached.

see, like me.....i am staying in an island...therefore almost entire of my plants, bettas, books and even daily needs are bought online and email and they are sent via postal service.....set aside those daily needs, they are material therefore not much of attention is needed, either they arrive safely or they'll go missing.

i will only touch on the plants as the subject of discussion.

the pro of sending plants bareroot are, they are cleaner less messy, lighter in sense of weight so cost lesser on postal charges and they wont get smashed from the weight of the wet/damp media when the parcel got tossed around while travelling. * others please contribute

the cons of sending bareroot plants are, they are susceptible of temperature shock, causing plants to dehydrate due to prolong heat and delayed parcel just to name a few, plants takes longer time to acclimatized due to shock while in the parcel * others please contribute

so the bottom line is still depends on the buyer’s request on the condition that they think the best for the plants to arrived safely and the seller will normally comply.

For my personal preferred 100% foolproof, live plant guaranteed method (based on my requirement, location and the current local weather pattern) I will normally request for;

1) root area to be wrapped with damp sphagnum moss, then cover with plastic to maintain humidity
2) the whole plant (with the wrapped root area) will then placed into another plastic bag
3) all plants to be packed individually
4) provide ample of shock absorbent material ie peanuts, Styrofoam bits and even crumpled old newspaper

Me think Harris just wants to share and exchange ideas which is a good thing. Good job.

On kevin's view regarding the pro of sending bare rooted plant, i think the weight issue normally does not arise unless we are ordering in bulk.

However, i fully agree on the cons of sending bare rooted plant as our weather does not permit it and not forgetting our snail postal service.

I would also like to add, water the plants that are to be send out generouly one day beforehand to prevent dehydration if it take longer than necessary to reach its recipient.

weight issue is mainly because some ppl will request to send together with the pot (imagine the weight of the damp sphagnum moss) the weight of the SM will cause damage to the soft part of the plants.......and the postal fee too..*biggrin2*

Send plant bare root is because it will prevent the plant damage and it is cheaper. Else, if send with pot, the parcel may upside down, and it may causing the media fall out from the pot. And plant may damage.

The reason that may causing the plant (send by courier service, normally will reach the destination in 1 day) die after repot is few
1. the parcel is expose to too hot temperature
2. the plant is not healthy
3. the receiver didnt handle it properly


eeeemmm... what others reason?

When people ship plants, potted (ate least where ive ordered from) they put wax paper over the soil over the pot.

Hre in the US we have this thing calles FLAT RATE BOX

If you have a box that is 2 ft by 2 ft. they dont weigh it, if it fits it ships. and thats only 10.00m us money for shipping. you could pack nearly over 2000 plants in a box that big just for 10 bucks shipping!

lucky u guys had that kind of service.we here have a cheap service but it takes a long time to arrive the destination.about 3days to reach in the country.around 2weeks if to europe.if "poslaju",it can send u parcel in just 1day within malaysia.but tax is kinda high.to europe,RM100(45 USD) tax if below 500grams.
