Ok Hongrui, now I understand your signature "More and more raffs, amps and hookers"! What great coloration! Having only a few reds other than vikings I'd be interested to hear if you've found any pattern to what helps bring out the reds in these species...or is it all genetics? With Vikings, plants in full sun with pitchers well hidden in deep shade seems to make all the difference. Anything similar with these others? PS Love that tri-color amp (last one) and the deep red Hooker. Is that hookeriana a 'designated' clone or something you just 'created'? Please keep me in mind if you ever seed out either of them! :biggrin: Great Plants!

i think the color of these 2 spp and hybrid depends mainly on their genes. however good light is required to bring out the color of the pitchers, i think. i have some ampullarias basals that got hidden and their colors are not as nice as those getting sun.

that particular hooker is a plant i got via a trade. i think i won't be creating any raffs/amps/hookers any time soon. i probably still need another 3-4 years before i can expect any flowers from them!

Nice selections you got there Hongrui. You mentioned that those plants getting sun is producing better color pitchers, how much sun are we talking about?? I have heard from others too much sun will bleach the color too, right? Thanks.

well it depends on what species you're referring to. pitchers of N. sp. 'Viking' does get bleached in bright light. but for raffs, amps and hookers, i find that they do usually color up better when they get more light. for these guys, you can safely expose them to full sun, provided that you keep them well watered.

frankly, i am not aware of any other species other than N. sp. 'Viking' whose pitchers bleach under light. but another possibility is that for highland neps, some of them color up better in cooler temps, meaning if you keep them under shade, the lower temps may result in better coloration of the pitchers.
