Hi, Boon from pg

Hi all, I am Boon from penang, I am stil very new to this forum and I am a begineer in keeping pitcher & air plant. I have interest at this pitcher thingy after I saw them in a wholesale store at Ringlet, Cameron Highland. I bought 2 pots of Nepenthes home and now I separated them to 9 pots and they are growing well. I am now looking forward to try other plants as well. Pls let me know if they are any free plants or seeds to be given to newbie like me.

i alredi order some venus fly trap & Sarra seeds from ebay recently.. trying to grow them myself rather then buying a "ready-make" plant. Wil take pics of my NP when I free, but i think those are common species

I bet those plants you bought are xVentrata and xMiranda.
Welcome btw, hope you learn more from sifus here.

Re: Hi, Boon from pg

BTW, there is a 95% chance that the VFT seeds that you got are typical version. Not to make you unhappy, just to say, if you wanna get the cultivars like akai ryu or B52, growing from seeds are almost impossible.

Anyways, you can get it from some of us....

Cheers

Hi there,
Welcome, this is the reason for you to join up pet pitcher, to help each other to be better in cultivating CP plants.

For your case, it'll be better if you can provide some ID and growing condition for your plants so we can better help you. Thanks.

I'd say those are N. xVentrata you have there. And as I can see from your 3rd photo, you are growing them in shade, they should thrive very well there.

I got limited space coz i live in rifle range flats, air itam. I actually bought 1 pot red & 1 pot green from cameron last 2 months ago. Each pot got at least 3-4 main stem. I separated them into become more pots. All the cups dried off & now what you see on the pictures are newly grown cups. I wonder why the red one also turn to green... something to do with sunlight exposure ?

If I am not mistaken, you bought nep xventrata. It only retains its reddishness in highland condition, if it is in LL condition, it will become green. Here, look at this thread.

https://forum.petpitcher.net/showthre...?t=1610&page=2

I also bought this plant. David told me about the nep and what will happen if grown in LL conditions.:1thumbup:

Well if given as much sunlight as direct sun it will turn red and retain the redness...But it will not be as red as tyuo bought it.

Ken

i scare if I give them more sunlight, the cup & leave will start to dry off.

I put up the shade recently after many cups dried off.... & some leaves also dried.

Re: Hi, Boon from pg

I have a pot of N. xVentrata that's shaded by some larger Neps. plants, it produces bigger pitchers & are more reddish in color.

A larger plant that's exposed to more direct sunlight almost all day long grows robustly, producing plenty of pitchers but the all dry-up very fast. This plant is quite big, approx. 15 feet high, so unless I trim it, I can possibly move the pot to a more shaded position.

So I believe, more shaded condition helps N.xVentrata produce more crimson-like pitchers that'll last for quite a long time. Direct sunlight would cause a gangly- growth & pitchers that dries up real fast.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Re: Hi, Boon from pg

Hi cbkhoon

Well i had my tough times with nepenthes ventrata by immeditaly after i bought it i put it out in full sun....Even though it was a hardy plant after a few days all the pitchers dry off....So if you wanna put it to direct sun or even if you just wanna put it in a sunnier area slowly adapt it..Maybe after 2-3weeks it will harden off and you can leave it there on its own.

Hi Athene

I never tried though in your case where putting your ventrata in a shadier condition the nep produces bigger and redder pitchers. But as you said i did realise that the pitchers didn't really last very long for me probally max around 4 months where normally my neps have pitchers for minimumly 6 months+ most of the time.As you said it did grow very robustly and produced many pitchers.

As for some of the pitchers which were hiding in between pots or under my palm tree or even under the plant the pitchers were very green....While those under burning sun were much redder.I'm not sure if they are upper pitchers which i doubt because they're tendrills didn't curl or anything and they look quite alike as the lowers.I say this because since upper pitchers of most neps are less attractive or maybe in other words less colourful.

Re: Hi, Boon from pg

Ken, when I said them pitchers don't last as long, I meant instead of lasting up to 5-6 months, they only last approx. 1-2 months before they wither and dry-up.

While the main stem has been producing uppers for sometimes, I continue getting basals popping up all the times, so I still get lower pitchers.

Have a nice day.

Amelie.Poulain 15th December 2008 02:11 PM

Re: Hi, Boon from pg

And btw, Ken, in regards to upper pitchers being less attractive + less colorful, that's not entirely true, there's a lot of uppers that's way better looking then the lower.

Have you seen N. [strike]rajah[/strike] lowii uppers as compared to the lowers?

Sorry for the mistype
