Flower Development
3 Attachment(s)
I am thinking to document VFT flowering process here. Not only for my own reference, but to share to anyone interested. I know some literatures are advicing owners to remove flower stalks in encouraging growth. As long as the plant is healthy enough, I believe it is alright to go ahead letting it flowers.
Week 0: Flower stalk is recognized 3 weeks after the plant awakes from dormancy. https://forum.petpitcher.net/attachme...5&d=1262948411 Week 1: Attachment 3252 Week 2: Attachment 3253 Attachment 3254 Feel free to comment if anything I should watch out for. Will update as it progress...:) |
Re: Flower Development

Re: Flower Development
So cute!
|
Re: Flower Development
Show us when it flowers...You're probably the first person in M'sia to let a Vft flower!!!
P.S. What are you planning to do with seeds?May I have some? :P |
Re: Flower Development
I've let mine flower before, Marvin. Most people let their VFT flower, except for some. A lot of the VFT in Cameron Highland are flowering whenever I see them.
|
Re: Flower Development
Ooh I didn't see any pics so sorry....:P again
|
Re: Flower Development
Sure there must be many having their plants flowering before.:) Probably not many document the details.

Week 3:
First flower today! The stalk is shorter than I expect, only ~5in. Attachment 3290 Size of flower. Attachment 3291 Closeup of newly opened flower. Attachment 3292 |
Re: Flower Development
There are 2 VFTs that are flowering at the same time? if I may suggest, please try to let the two flowers "kiss" each other from time to time, or heck every day, so that they are cross pollinated. I just hope they do flower at the same time so that you can do this. I forgot if VFTs are self fertile/self pollinating, but it won't hurt if you can have a different plant pollinate it.
If you do decide to cut the flower before it ripens, you can try to make plantlets out of the flowerstalk, just treat them like a leaf cutting. Good luck! TTFN Arvin |
Re: Flower Development
Ooh!The veins on the petal is beautiful!!But the pollen is....white?
|
Re: Flower Development
Yes, 2 flowering plants. Very informative suggestion. But one of the plant is divided from the other. They are genetically identical clones. Transferring pollen from the other is still self pollination. Each flower only lasts 2 days, with stigma receptive the second day. To ensure fertilization, I'll rub among the flowers.
The pollen grain does look whiter than other plants..:) |

Week 3 - at full bloom: Attachment 3335 Week 4 - flowers are short lived. Every flower lasts only 2 days. Stigma looks receptive the 2nd day. Attachment 3336 Week 5 - ripening seedpods: Attachment 3337 On the left, I have peeled off the seedpod so that the seeds lining in are visible. Attachment 3338 The seedpods and seeds are really small. Attachment 3339 I thought seed development failed initially. But they seem easily self-pollinated, with or without help. There were flowers that failed to have the petals opened up. Even those flowers have seeds developed. Fewer than others though. |

It is very hot recent weeks. 32C indoors. Probably 35+C under direct sunlight. All my plants under 6 hour direct sunlight suffer severe sunburn. Just moved them to a place with 4 hour sunlight. The 7 month old seedlings are doing great in 2 hour sunlight. |
Re: Flower Development
Well actually I tried to put them in a container to block them from rain...then I forgot them and the container practically microwaved them...

It is true that flowering is exhaustive to VFT. This is how the plant look like after completing the flowering process. It is setback at least 2 months.
Attachment 3496 Will take it a while to recuperate...:) |
Re: Flower Development

Re: Flower Development
