Just want to ask those of you who are also into planted tanks or fishes where I can buy really good quality guppy fishes in KL area. I am looking for rare species or really nice ones.

Found some info about a shop in Penang and fish farm in Singapore. Just can't find any in KL.

I have a clay pond at the window of my apartment where my plants are and woudl liek to have some guppies in there.

Re: Guppy fish

BTW, All those show guppy are consider as 1 species, Poecilia reticulata. The various type of guppy are produced through selective breeding, just like cps cultivar.

Re: Guppy fish

Guppy are real easy fishes. They can grow in some drain, haha. The only thing to be cautious of is NOT TO OVERFEED them.About three real small(1 mm size0 can do for one fish.I did overfeed them and my guppy all died.....

Thanks Lim for the links and information and thanks marvin for the warning. Will keep that in mind. :)

David, you're not trying to grow water based CP are you? With fishes, I recommend, U aurea and/or U gibba. As the fish produces urea, they'll fill your pond in no time. Both U makes pretty good mulch for plants hehe.

Marvin is right, overfeeding will kill them and lots of feacal matter. Lim is the expert here. Maybe you might want some exotic ones which will cost about RM50 a set (2M1F)

Re: Guppy fish

Fancy show guppies are really delicate subjects to keep and breed. Most cost around RM50-200 per pair (or 2 males and 1 female). With that kinda $$$, I personally would go for more CPs instead.. :p My dad used to breed some of these guppies but they are weak and short-lived. The males of some varieties (particularly the 'ribbon'fin') are sterile because the reproductive organ is abnormally shaped and they can't mate. Most babies of these fancy guppies are also weak and susceptible to all sorts of problems before they reach mature size..

David 19th June 2009 10:36 AM

Re: Guppy fish

Hmm... in that case... I might just stick to the normal not-so-fancy guppies then.

Re: Guppy fish

David, do Betta. Better, more interesting. Don't have to change water so often, no need aeration. Just need cover as they are fantastic jumpers. Buy yourself a net and join Rosdi of bettasocietymalaysia on one of his puchung wild Betta hunt. My B imbellis is now slowly filling my used to be Aldrovanda pond, so many of them.

Re: Guppy fish

BA, good to consider but I've to get them when they are fry or from the wild where they grow up together. Or else they will fight each other to death.

Ban Aik, RM50 can only get a grade B guppy. Nowadays guppy can be as expensive as a yellow tailed arowana *biggrin2*

Paphiboy, I think that was just a stereotype about guppy. And what you have mentioned above are all typical "symptoms" of a farm raised guppy.
Nowadays, breeders are very careful and not so skeptical. Brine shrimps and imported fish foods are fed compared to worms( most farms feed worms as this will make the fish grow faster) .

Life span wise, I have raised an albino for 16 months with 7 drops.

Anyway, all discussion about guppy are welcome. :2thumbup:

Re: Guppy fish

for breeding wise, go for guppy, they breed automatically and the fries size will not let them slip into the trap of aquatic cp, betta fries definitely a feeder to aquatic cp traps

Re: Guppy fish

Yes, David, you should try wild bettas or endlers. I love endlers. They are small and lively to look at.

bactrus 19th June 2009 09:30 PM

Re: Guppy fish

David that is not true. Only few species will fight. I have a whole pond of B imbellis growing happily together, about 10 of them. Lim is the expert here. Contact the betta people. Ya, Fishoman is one of them too.

Imbellis means peaceful.

Re: Guppy fish

Ok Ban Aik! I learn new thing about beta today. Thanks... hey, didn't know you were into betas as well. Since when friend. Did not see any last year at your place when I was there for the CP competition.

Wow fishoman, those are really beautiful guppies you have there. I like the albino super red, blue grass, metal lace speartail and especially the albino red lace. Ok, I shall stick to guppies for now unless I get myself another pond or tank, I'll get some "peaceful" betas to put in there. :)

Re: Guppy fish

Ya, used to play with some guppy but not serious. Mainly Betta spendens. I feel plants easier. When busy just keep them wet will do, don't have to feed. Given up on fishes, fishing, running and hiking and and due to family and work. Hobbies are for free time and not to be given priority.

David, here's the link http://www.bettasocietymalaysia.com....forum.php?f=24 think you need to register prior to viewing. Try Kepong FRIM I remember someone on that forum mentioned something in the old betta society forum about catching some betta there.

Re: Guppy fish

Hi fishoman,I thought balck guppies are short-lived too?sooxiwei:betta fries will get eaten by aquatic CPs?And betta must be forced to breed???Because you say guppies breed automaticly?

sooxiwei 22nd June 2009 12:43 AM

Re: Guppy fish

well, imbellis breed like rabbit too, not hard at all, but can't disturb them too much after breeding, guppy can be disturb even it get pregnant, that's why I feel it is easier, plus that betta jump even with just a small hole that suit it's body size, guppy are more peaceful, even it jump, it won't be as high as betta

Hey i have a small aquarium back home and used to grow guppies...About 2 years back bought batch of them some males and females sooo after awhile you get FRY!! I seperated the pregnant females into anther smaller tank and sooo i got lots and lots of fry..They live for about 2 years.....nice...Well for me the red ones die faster.

David 26th June 2009 11:09 AM

Re: Guppy fish

Do you still have them Ken? I just got some but I realised the nicer ones or more expensive ones die easier. A few days ago, the electricity tripped in my house and the air pump was stopped for a couple of hours. The expensive ones died. :( Those cheaper ones that are not so colourful survived.

air pump is not required if there are not too many of them

A filtration is needed no matter how many fish u keep (except betta) , as a good filtration system can built up good beneficial bacteria and also removes NH4 and NO3 .

David sad to to hear that your expensive guppies RIP but this is a process every beginner will face. I have lost more than 300 guppies before and now I own more than 3000.

A friendly suggestion is that you can put a submerge bio-sponge filter inside your guppy house , this will help.

piscesilim 26th June 2009 08:55 PM

Re: Guppy fish

To me, filtration is very important. Unless you like to change water everyday.

Re: Guppy fish

Hi David........I gave them away a few months possibly a year back....I still do have my aquarium but i grow other fishes which are also easy like neon tetras and swordtails...Last time i alwys care for them and look at them but then they all start dying....Now i just ignore and the only thing i do is just feed them :) Soo far filtration when my house trip for few hours they are unaffected

David 27th June 2009 03:48 PM

Re: Guppy fish

Ok, will look into buying a bio filter. I use to catch those guppies from the drain when I was still schooling and I remembered they do not die even when place in a small glass bottle without filtration or air pump. Thanks for the advise.
