Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
Hi folks,
As some have read I have had some troubles growing Rafflesaina Here in Kansas , US. I have had 6 all have died not sure why wether it was soil over watering (highly doubt) or just poor quality plant . I have recently received two seed grown Raff's one i just sold the other seems to be doing ok those two have been growing in a fish tank now for well since April an Havent really moved in growth . but , the funny thing is I have one other that is a TC Raff an it is in My H/L grow Chamber an it is the one that has taken off . It is in the same media as the others same amount of air movement humidity in the H/L chamber is 10to 20 % lower then the L/L tank. They are pretty close to the same distance away from the lights . I havent realy fully watered my plants in about amonth due to i mist them religously so media is damp but not soaked . Hope that makes sense ...lol Any how hope you all Low Landers can throw a life raft out an help safe these lil guy's . Because these are supposed to be easy ....lol Daren |

Re: Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
Peat would have this effect one the raff only of others , or due to the fact of it being a seedling?

Coz more lfs means wetter media. Now I was told to grow Raff's dryer than let's say a Amp, an almost as dry as Veitchii an Truncata. Daren |
Re: Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
I think that's your problem, most N. veitchii belongs to epiphytic nep, if you grow N. rafflesiana like you're growing N. veitchii, IMHO, it's too dry unless you water the media few times a day.

in all cases keeping the media moist ( not wet ) and very well drain were essential for the healthy growth of neps. But if sphagnum moss is too wet in your tank try a higher mix of perlite. |
Re: Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
I've grown some raffs from seeds. Only 4 plants of a seedpod came through. They are now >20 cm diameter after 22 months after sowing. I keep them also in a terrarium. 22°C in the night and 28°C day. Strong wind from a ventilator dries the pots fast out. So I have to water them daily. The medium is 2 parts sphag and 1 part perlite and a drainage of pine bark. The pots are 8 cm sqare which seems still enough.

OK ,
So what i am going to do then is repot 1) Check the roots Health . 2) Use NO peat . 3) Use Perlite , Cedar mulch , chopped LFS, An keep media a bit damper then i have been . Check . Sweet I will Keep all informed on their condition . An i would like to Thanks All that Have commented their 2 cents :) Daren |

most welcome Daren,
Since you grow them in the tank using a ventilator ( as in Boris case ) will help control the temp and humidity. do post and update with the progress. |

Re: Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
Hi Daren, i dont have any experience growing nepenthes in terrarium. I grow all my nepenthes outdoor.. Actually raff is strong, easy to adapt and grow fast.. For my raff:
1. media: mixture of cocopeat and cocochip 2. they love bright sunlight, less sunlight will make them weak and refused to pitcher. 3. humidity around 60 - 70 % 4. temp: 31-32 C , sometimes 34 C on hot day , 26-28 C at night 5. watering: 2 times a day hope that can help.. |
Re: Best Conditions for Growing N. Rafflesiana
wow that's alot...something like +50 pots:1thumbup:
