My offer still stands to help members from KL carry their plants to Penang for the competition if they cannot cannot make it on 28 Nov. You just need to find a way to get it back on 7th Dec. 08.

I will drive there on 27 Nov.

Don't forget that besides the competition, Charles Clark and Ch'ien Lee will be there and they will be giving some talks. This is one of the highlights for me at the event and it would be interesting to talk to them in person rather than just read the books they publish. Both Charles and Ch'ien are two of the most authority on the subject of Nepenthes at present time.

In case some of you do not know who they are, here's a little introduction:

Dr. Charles M. Clarke is a botanist and taxonomist specialising in the carnivorous plant genus Nepenthes. Clarke has an honours degree in Botany from Monash University in Melbourne, and a Ph.D. in Ecosystem Management at the University of New England, in Armidale, New South Wales.

Clarke first travelled to Borneo in search of pitcher plants in 1987. In 1989 and 1990 he lived in Brunei, studying the ecology of Nepenthes. In between travels, Clarke has taught Ecology and Biometrics at James Cook University in Queensland, and worked as a horticultural consultant in Hong Kong.

He now works at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Clarke has written five books and guides on Nepenthes, which present a synthesis of the research performed on his travels around the Malay Archipelago.

Clarke has described five species of Nepenthes: Nepenthes benstonei, Nepenthes chaniana, Nepenthes izumiae, Nepenthes jacquelineae, and Nepenthes tenax.

Ch'ien Lee holds a B.Sc. in Biology/Ecology from the University of California Santa Cruz. He studied various subjects ranging from entomology to animal tracking and ethnobotany, and eventually worked as a naturalist and environmental educator in the East Bay Regional Parks in northern California.

In 1996, fulfilling a lifelong desire to live in the tropics, he moved to Sarawak (East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo) to work in a program for the propagation of native plant species (The result of the program... Malesiana Tropicals).

Nepenthes have been a major focus of his for over 14 years, and he has published a number of papers on their taxonomy. His photographs have appeared in numerous articles and books, and are featured in "Pitcher Plants of Sarawak" and "The Fishes of Kuching Rivers". In addition to his photography, Ch'ien is currently engaged as a consultant at the Botanical Research Centre (Sarawak Forestry Corporation) in Kuching.
