« Thread Started on Apr 25, 2007, 5:56pm » Hello all, Nice to join this forum, I'm a Neps lover from Indonesia, West Java to be exact. I joined this forum soon after I read David's post by the title of "Misunderstandings about Nepenthes" which is exactly the same thing I experience here in my place. My name is Sofyan, but you can just call me by my nickname "rajah" unless it will cause confusion with the actual plant haha... Bandung is the city where I live, its located at about 700 m asl with humid to very humid condition. I started growing Neps since December 2006, but I have set my interest on ethnobotanical and medicinal plants since 1999, so it's like a smooth expansion to me. Currently I am growing several species of Neps, almost all of which are lowland and intermediate species (also hybrids) from Borneo Exotics. They all love growing here so far, though most of them are not big (or many) enough to produce seeds yet. I am hoping that someday when my plants are flowering we can work together by exchanging pollens etc. Happy growing, Sofyan |

Next have to know lighting conditions. Cosmo knows alot http://s4.images.proboards.com/wink.gif haha can ask him if you got any questions http://s4.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif Btw, what do you grow your neps in? There are alot of mixes out there haha. |

« Reply #5 on Apr 25, 2007, 6:44pm » OK zakh, I'll ask him when I have a problem with lighting http://s4.images.proboards.com/wink.gif Btw I use mostly a mix of coconut husk and arang sekam (I'm not sure what is called in English? it's the burnt husk of rice to give the coco husk some air to breathe). There are 3 grades of coconut husk here, the cubes, the long fibers (coir) and the powder (resembling peat moss in size). What about yours? |

« Reply #6 on Apr 25, 2007, 6:54pm » I'm currently experimenting, but I think I'm going to settle on a peat moss:perlite:vermiculite:dead sphagnum moss 1:1:1:1 mix. It's well drained but the peat and moss will retain some water, enough for a few days without rotting the roots. Your arang sekam works alot like perlite haha. Coconut husk eh? Never seen someone use that before. |

But I like your idea more. haaa, haa... Welcome again Rajah. Glad to have you with us. Just curious, how did you find out about this forum? |

« Reply #13 on Apr 27, 2007, 8:24pm » Well David, I knew about this forum from a google search on "Nepenthes sumatrana". Yes this forum is in English so I think it will attract global members. Hi too, bifurcatum, fishingman and cactustts! Zakh, I think there are plenty of arang sekam also in Malaysia. And coconut husk for example is used by Borneo Exotics successfully, but that's because they dont have any other choice. Also when using coconut husk, beware of salt. It must not be processed anywehere near the beach. |
