I've brought orchids and Nep cuttings in a bag before but that was on a domestic flight from Kelantan to KL. Other places I havent tried but not by plane though, I prefer the safe method by train.

Ken, if you're caught, you're caught. Just surrender the plant to the officer if begging and reasoning don't work.

Forgot to add, if you're caught illegally bringing plants out of a certain country you can be trial and jail at the King's pleasure. That is before arriving Malaysia.

Ken, if you are shipping it back, you still need the certification & permit.

Plus if you mail the plant to Malaysia & the recepient (you?) does not have the neccesary paper such as CITES & import permit, the plants will be confisticated & destroyed. In order to process the papers & stuff, it requres a lot of time & money so it's not usually worth it if you just importing a few plants.

What you do is up to you so long like I always say, you dare do it, you dare face the consequenses.

Just a reminder, our stand is that this forum DOES NOT promote nor condone illegally importing plants in our country.

Ken, Good idea nad you'll just smear your good name. Considering you haven't any bad records with authorities. I have a very very bad record with the police- for exceeding speed limit. Yup, I have also learn some good lessons.

Re: Bringing plants back...

I believe that any means of shipping a CP through air no matter whatever way will require CITES permits and certificates. If you attempt to send a plant with no permit, the plant will be confisticated and you will lose it forever.............if you try shipping it without permits, well, you might end up like what ban aik said........however, it is kinda tricky and full of rules to transport a plant internationally.

Cheers

Example if i buy a plant from sabah and i'm in malaysia the sender would just have to pack it up and send it to me right? Soo whats the difference with me there sending the plant back to my own place??

Re: Bringing plants back...

Ken,

If you click onto Malesiana Tropicals website, you will see that there is a red text asking whether you have a permit. Now that permit for importation is required for overseas purchasers. Up until two years ago, MT ships to all Malaysian states with phytosanitary certificate and a wildlife permit but NO Cities certification. Cities certification is ONLY required for INTERNATONAL trade.

From 2006, MT just ships without any PC and permit. This works out better for them, because for the issurance of PC, they have to treat the plants with chemicals. Many a time the treatment caused the plants to die.

In countries like America, shipping of plants interstate also required PC so as to prevent the spread of plant disease and pests.

On another issue is the are alot of illegal/protect plants sold in the markets of Sarawak and Sabah. You will be surprise, there are many European and Japanese owning illegally collected rajah, macrophylla, edwardsiana and clipeatas.

In theory, when we go into the Kinabalu NP we have to hire a guide, who not only guide us but also ensure that we don't collect or mess round with the plants. I was told of a Japanese collector who paid the natives living around the park to collect macrophylla seedlings for him.

So if you are caught with illegal plants you are also in hot soup. Even in courier boxes. Don't forget to prevent, illegal trade like pirated CDs and drugs, our custom have installs many hi-tech scanners at major courier and post offices collection centres. But unless you are an expert, all nepenthes looks alike. Which means plants in small parcels would usually go through (this is my opinion).

This is a sticky issue but good that we have some construtive discussion about this. Ken, my advice, start your collection by getting plants from local hobbyist (Sabah and Sarawak included), there's should be plenty to different species for you to trade or buy.

Please be aware bringing plants like nep from overseas will require a lot of paper work by law. If you don't follow the law, you have only yourself to blame and you'll bare all the consequences.
