I think it can work. Been using this method for my N.sibu to increase humidity and so far no problem yet

Re: Cephalotus from YG
Make sure you protect the polyfoam box from rain. Else, make sure there is overflow hole to avoid those ceph pot soap in water
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG
thanks for all the wish,
there are holes around the styrofoam boxes that provide outflow, about 1cm lower than the brick I place them on:smile: |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
any update on the main ceph?
do u get any strike on the pulled leaf? Thanks Harris |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
Hows your cephalotus now?
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG
Been busy for the past few months and still busying now, repot the whole pot, photo taken months back, now left 1 clump, another died...
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...d/DSC01558.jpg Decided to do some experiment after seeing how master N. Lau keep his ceph, the container is covered up, open for photo taking only, again, photo taken months ago: http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...d/DSC01561.jpg Photo taken few days ago, notice some growth sprout from 1 clump of them with no death http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...d/DSC01740.jpg And Harris, is it necessary to spam around the forum... |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
sorry..i wont post anything from now one ,i try :)
|
Re: Cephalotus from YG
Just curious, how did N.Lau keep his ceph? He has farm on highland right? Did he grow it there?

Re: Cephalotus from YG
Sooxiwei, if I may suggest, try covering the top layer of the media with something that dries fast to keep the crown of the plant dryer. Last time when I grew my ceph, I think it was the wet media that caused the crown of my ceph to just rot and eventually die. Great growing though. Looks like it will grow beautifully for you.

top 1/2 cm was fully sphagnum peat moss 4 cm of 30 sphagnum peat moss, 50 perlite and 20 aquarium sand 4 cm of aquarium sand bottom was a tear off layer of aquarium filter fibre to stop medium from flowing off I'm using the 1/2cm of full sphagnum peat moss to indicate when to water it, I plan to cover it but still looking for transparent cover, kinda busy up to date One of the ceph in the orange pot died after I left them out under the rain few months back, another recovered and start growing, but overall, slooooowwww :) btw, may I know what is recommended for the top layering? |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
from experience in growing leaf pulling outdoors, they will grow very slowly & they won`t mature to a size which is justifiable to our effort. Usually the heat will get to them before they can grow 'large'. i`m not a detailed grower tho so i stand corrected. but sigh.....love cephs but they are not happy growers in our weather.

btw, is it ok to grow them under shades? I hide then among my nep collection where the temperature were more cooling |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
Well, I'm planning to use about 1/2 cm of aquarium sand as top layer. Rest of the media is peat moss + aquarium sand, water everyday.
I read somewhere in the web saying that a good way of growing big and colourf pitchers is by first putting the ceph under shade until pitchers are big and green, then slowly exposing to light until full sunlight to get redder pitchers. Going to try this when I get my ceph this weekend. |

Re: Cephalotus from YG
Heh, I seriously hate perlite now. Stick to your hand and stuff like that and it holds a lot of water too. The aquarium sand I bought is about 1mm in diameter, not the fine sand like in children playground  is yours the same as mine?
Reading around, some sources say that sand is very helpful to keep the soil from breaking down and compacting the roots too much. And I'll say that aquarium sand looks nice too  |
Re: Cephalotus from YG
Soo : i don`t know enuff to advice you as the heat levels in your house are different from mine. In my house, the cephs get angled a`noon sun for like less than 1 hour from about 2-4 pm ( time fluctuates )
Sarras ? heheh, those grow quite well in our weather. The dormancy resistant clones are even more interesting. Trial by experiment. |
