According to those who went to the 2006 MAHA, the traffic will be very congested till the UPM Tol.. Hmm Tarence: I'll be back on mid July http://s4.images.proboards.com/grin.gif |

Re: MAHA 2008
Hey guys, I have gone to MAHA this afternoon with my friends. (I used to go with them every year, so sorry I won't join you guys).
This is a much bigger scale event compared to Laman. Suggest you guys park your car as near as possible to the main exhibition hall, you can take a so called "tram" (see it for yourself, hehe, but free of charge) to the hall, or you'll have to walk at least 10 minutes under the hot sun (sorry, no trees). Fortunately today no sun. :2thumbup: There are 4 exhibition halls, all air-cond, don't worry  You'll find a lot of plants, orchids, ornamental plants, lycos, tilandsias, fruits & vegetables, herbs, indoor plant tanks (there is one CP tank there, the rest are miniature ornamental plant tank, cactus tank etc.) tropical fishes, all sorts of crops like padi, corns... There are also machines, tractors, fertilisers, pets food, packed junk food/dried fruits, fruit/herb drinks, fruit enzyme..... anything to do with agriculture and agroculture. Hey, YG Park was there too! Alot of neps, sarracenias and VFTs. I don't have much time to go seeing everything they have, but make sure you bring enough money or you'll regret. Bring along your own water if you don't like sweet or other flavoured drinks sold there. Suggest you guys don't bring along baby as I believe there will be very crowded during weekend, most importantly you need to walk alot and time consuming too. |
Re: MAHA 2008
Cool... May I know how is the price for Sarra/VFT/Tillandsia?
For those Sarra/VFT, are they those normal type that can found in Sg. buloh? |
Re: MAHA 2008
Hi Casey, I'm so sorry that I didn't look into the price for the VFTs as I already have those. and have no time to look into every CPs there as my friend has to rush back home. Thilandsia was at other stall, the price is reasonable, too. The sarras are from as low as RM18 to as high as RM70 or RM80 if I'm not mistaken, the new release are more expensive. But you could buy smaller plant as the bigger plants are of course higher priced. The new release are mitchelliana, farnhamii, farnhamii hybrid to name a few. The stenvensii is so beautiful and different from what we see in our local nursery, it's redder in colour, there are also leucophylla, flava, catesbeia, some hybrids...
Some of the neps are so huge, go see for yourself! Unfortunately I don't see any sundews around. You guys must be very "careful" that YG Park's stall was located in Hall D that actually exhibites mainly packed food, so funny, that's the only stall selling plant. Luckily one of my friend is very 'tong jia' (people who like eating), so we have to follow and went around for free food tasting, or else I'll missed YG stall. I guess YG must be joined in very last minute. |
Re: MAHA 2008
wah.... cant wait to go visit this POISON world.... heheheh
Guys... be prepare your pocket money ... it gonna get out from your pocket .. heheheh |
Re: MAHA 2008
TS, thanx for update... That means, there is a lots of variance of sarra and VFT lor...
Im not sure able to attend MAHA or not... But, defanately will get some help from others and get some plant... Going to PokKai liao!!!!:crying: |
Re: MAHA 2008
There are many species and hybrid of sarra but only one form of VFT.
Prepare to burn a big hole in your pocket, guy :2thumbup: Oh yeah, the lovely sibuyanensis is one the huge neps selling there... |
Re: MAHA 2008
uh oh...looks like it`s gonna be difficult NOT to buy anything there. sheesh. so the free entrance is just a gimmick coz there are so MANY goodies inside to see, buy, taste, try, touch & take home....
i want the sarracenia. but rm70-80....hmmm.....we`ll see. edmund, we share some of the plants yah ? heheh. i got tight budget this month. i know what david is after there. |
Re: MAHA 2008
I seen there is some joining buying project is going on... May I join too...
Else, may be we can buy difference sp. and exchange it later. And I believe that there is more then 1 plant in a pot, right:confused: |
Re: MAHA 2008
i think sharing is the best solution ....
|
Re: MAHA 2008
Hi,
Went there this morning, this year the event is much better than last time. Visited the YG Park boot, lots of neps (albo, hockeriana, sanguinea, pilosa...etc) and sara, didnt see any VFT.. may be sold out.. sara oso left those big 1 (2-3ft)... probably they will refill the plants that sold. Didn't remember all the prices but N.pilosa is abt RM100+, s.flava (big) RM60+ Tillandsia mostly are just RM15.. expensive one are the XXL size RM120. ps: go as early as possible.. very crowed. |
Re: MAHA 2008
These are some of the pictures taken at the event.. sorry didnt take photo of YG Park... camera out of battery :(

Re: MAHA 2008
Hi Boon Leng, glad that you brought along your camera but unfortynately didn't able to take YG Park's booth.
Wow, the VFTs all gone? And the small sarra plants too ? That's fast! I believe they will get some for replacement. Weekday is crowded, I can't imagine during weekend, guys, be prepared. Tarence, the small plant is selling at RM18 to RM22 only. Quickly grab as many as you can. |
Re: MAHA 2008
You guys are "evil". Now I can't sleep at night. Can't wait to go now. One more day... one more day... one more day...
Boonleng, Yopu said the CP tank was done up by students. Are they from a society or which school are they from? Interesting. Would be great to meet up with them. |
Re: MAHA 2008
thx TS...i`ll grab them with both hands & perhaps feet too. heheh.
Casey : a bit scary to separate some sarracenias even tho there might be multiple plants in each pot. sometimes when we separate too early or too late in their genetic `season`, it might trigger dormancy or just die off. This applies for the more `rare` and unusual varieties. The common ones are more heat tolerant. But yes, if it`s too expensive, we have to buy diff types each then trade off. Are you going ? |
Re: MAHA 2008
thanks for the photo.... be prepare ...!!! i mean your money
one more days~~~~:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: |
Re: MAHA 2008
Agree with you tarence. Last time, after I separte my sarra, most of them are dormancy. Luckily all of them recovered from it. It is out of topic.
Suppose will go there by Saturday afternoon with my wife. |

Re: MAHA 2008
Just some updates. It was a fun outing. However, for those who have not gone to MAHA, only YG Park stall is selling CPs. The rest are selling herbs, orchids and tills.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Juliana of Malesiana Tropicals at YG Park booth. Could not recognise her at the beginning until she asked me if I am David. She is here to help educate the public on the cultivation of Nepenthes and to correct the wrong perception the public has about growing Nepenthes. MT will be bringing more and more Nepenthes into the Malaysian nursery market through YG Park. YG Park boss was also there. It was nice to meet up with her again. I don't think so she recognise me. The last time I saw her was a couple of years back. Went up Cameron Highlands to get Nepenthes from them quite often. Her hubby was not there tho. Will follow-up with some pictures from my camera later. |

I echo David`s post & will adda few things in.
I went with David & Edmund on Sat. On Sun, I went again. heheh. MsCheong from YG ( the boss wife or also the boss lah ) says they might bring down rooted cephalotus in the next 3 days or so. These are small cephs but they are rooted. She can`t confirm the price yet but it`ll be good for those of you who might to try. If you are looking for a sugar alternative, some stalls are selling Stevia which is a herb & the leaves taste like sugar. I bought these 2 sarras from YG : Attachment 145 Attachment 146 Attachment 147 |

Found this material that I thought might be used to grow Nepenthes. It is taken from a plant and the material does not decompose easily. It is used to make Polymer composite for building materials.
This was a research done by MARDI. They do not have any for sale. I wanted to get some back and try it out with my neps. Perhaps can place a layer of sphagnum moss at the bottom of the pot, then fill it up with kenaf and place another layer of s. moss on top to keep the humidity in the media. Re: MAHA 2008
Note : the vanilla plant is actually an orchid but its a vining / climbing type. the vanilla fragrance comes from the flowers & not the leaves. some visitors were seen plucking the leaves & smelling it & then commenting `eh, how come no smell wan ? `
hmmm......... |

Universiti Malaya booth promoting tissue culture. They are organising a few seminars in the month of September to teach people how to do it. However, you'll have to pay a fee... If I remember correctly it's RM600, and you get to take back a tissue culture kit.
Tarence registered for more information. Hopefully he pays the RM600 and go for the seminar, and come back to teach us all... free... haa, haaa.... UM student talking to us about tissue culture.
