Edward, Jens could afford it by having this thing called a job that makes a lot of money

So if you study hard (and always check your spelling & grammar ;) ) you too will get a good job & would be able to buy all those rare & expensive plants! - that you will share with me :shy:

Just kidding Ed, but seriously I don't think hamata is that expensive, it's just that it doesn't grow well here, so we are more cautious in getting them. At the same time, we wouldn't think much about spending a fortune on expensive rare lowland plants.

just my 2-cents worth,

~A~

Ooohh.........thanks a lot, Athene! Of course, I shall share with you if I had one, but you are staying hundreds of miles away from me, *biggrin2**biggrin2* i don't think you will travel all the way down here......hahaha. Just joking.......

Jens, hamata is one of my dream plants! But I am shocked by the price of it when I asked Fauzi how much a hamata was from BE. RM 500++..........:spinning::spinning::spinning:

Of course, I will get a job, but that will be a longggg longggg time later......

Cheers

Re: N. hamata

Ken,

What BE offered just while back was SEEDs grown hamata (USD120). For seeds grown stuff they are usually sold at a premium, as every plant is different. And you have good chances of getting FEMALE plants too.

Just a few weeks back BE offered a batch of tc hamatas at USD40.00. Though they are not cheap, they were gone in a few days. They are still expensive, because they are hard to tc and also I guessed BE has also to pay a licensing fee to produce them.

In early, 2007, yes just 2 years ago MT offered a very very affordable hamata at RM105.00 each. I bought 2 but they lasted only about a month. But back then my track record of growing highlanders was awful. I will be getting one later this year.

Another source of affordable hamata is from Phill Mann, the source of cephalotus in Singapore. Phill only tc them as a hobby, not for money and so it is very hard to get him to sell you his hamatas. Moreover paperwork in Australia is very expensive.

Re: N. hamata

Hai..... why stress of getting hamata....
We cant grow them well under lowland condition...

I cant imagine of paying so much for a dead plant in the end.....
Now I pray for someone or even myself create a hybrid with hamata that can have teeth and grow under lowland!

Re: N. hamata

Just my 2 cents, but I think that N. hamata isn't that cranky a plant...it just takes a while to adapt to a change in conditions and while its taking its own sweet time to adapt, its owners will panic and go do lots of funny things that only add stress to the plant. I got a hamata from MT back when they still had them and after getting it, it promptly turned its growing tip into a little green bud and over time, lost all its leaves. I didn't change the conditions I gave it and just carried on normally. After more than a year...surprise, the little bud kinda opened and a tiny leaf unfolded. The plant is now alive, growing(slowly regaining its former size) and occasionally producing a pitcher or two, only that its about as tiny as when I first got it. The hamata I tried from Wistuba is exactly the same in behaviour and again, turned into a green bud and is only now sending out a tiny leaf. Given that it seems to be able to take Singapore's day temps, a larger plant might be able to adapt if given time...

Re: N. hamata

Jeff,

Yes it is a high price to pay for 2 inch plant. We grow it because it is a challenge. Otherwise, everybody will be just happy with ventrata, gracilis and mirablis.

2 years ago, many of my highlanders were struggling to survive beyound 1 year. Now, they are growing and many are pitchering. Of course, failure is expensive. That is why, hamata should not recommended for new cp hobbist.
