Plant Nurseries in Bangkok?

Hi all, I don't know if I'm posting at the right place. Anyway, I'm making a business trip to Bangkok next week. If there is adequate time, I would like to visit some nurseries and see if I can get some Dioneae and Drosera.

Anyone care to suggest me where to go?

P/S: I've checked NeoFarm. They don't sell Drosera and the Dioneae they have are those that we can get here in Malaysia though. (would really want to get my hands on fuse teeth, dingley giant red, sawtooth etc etc:tongue:)

Hi Jason,
Your best bet is to hit Chatuchak market since most of the CP nurseries are situated outskirt of Bangkok that is if you don't mind travelling there... Perhaps you can contact khun wanakorn of Exoflora, he might be able to help. Hope this help.

Jason, I think you can get reasonably good variety of DM and Drosera from forumers. Among those who specialises in drosera are people like David, Casey and piscesilimLim, especially piscesilim has spares. As for DM, Casey is a good bet.

Thailand be a good source for Nep, no doubt about that.

If I'm not mistaken, the market only open on weekends right? My inbound trip will be on Sat though. I blame it on my company  Never really got the chance to visit there.

I'll see if K. Wanankorn is able to help out. Thanks.

And also, thanks Bactrus, I'll PM them. FYI, David does not posses any of the VFT that I mentioned. I text him before.

Actually, I think the plant market (including CPs) are on sale on the weekdays... I don't have the latest info so it's best for you to ask the locals.

Jason, if you don't mind please post an update of your success rate in getting CPs in BKK and where, for our reference. I hope to be able to visit some time in the future too and latest info from you would be nice. :)

Anyways last info I got is also Chatuchuck market, it's a huge market so you need to ask where the plants are being sold.

Sure do. I'll ask some of my local colleagues there see if they are able to help out. The silly thing is, one of them told me before; locals don't really go to Chatuchuck, mainly for tourists... :glare:

Defintely yes, I'll be heading to Jakarta then Vietnam's Saigon after this. Would be really glad if I'm able to get what I want *biggrin2*

Re: Plant Nurseries in Bangkok?

So, Chatuckuck turns out to be a plant paradise every Wed and Thurs. Even there are some do open during weekend, but $$$ is definitely not the wholesale's. The street itself lengths around 1km in a circle with two main exit. You can find all sorts of tropical plants there. Unfortunately only a hand full of stores offered CP. Most significantly, Nepenthes.

I found 3 stores offered Drosera and Dionaea (nearby JJ Mall exit). Not much in term of variety though. Hereby the compilation of CP offered there:

Pricing:
Small plant (3 'inch pot) = 50 Thai Baht
Medium plant (3 to 4 'inch pot) = + 170 Thai Baht
Large plant (4 to 5 'inch pot) = + 230 Thai Baht

Note: Large plant = matured Dionaea and Capensis. There were even some offered Dionaea were flowring.

Drosera:
Drosera Spatulata
Drosera Paradoxa
Drosera Ordensis
Drosera Capensis alba
Drosera Capensis red
Drosera Capensis typical
Drosera Aliciae
Drosera Capillaris

Dionaea:
As for Dionaea, only the typical type was found. Even there were some in "orange'sh" colouration, I believed it was due to the contribution of lighting factor, the owner knew nothing about it and wasn't able to clarify if there were different cultivation.

I also saw a huge number of plant nurseries along Ram Inthra highway (along Tesco Lotus and Crystal Park), unfornutely, due to time constraint, I wasn't able to visit them.

Just a side note: I was able to "smuggle" them back in hand carry luggage bag with ease.

Should anyone know there are other locations to check out CP in Bangkok, please nudge me as I'll be heading there again, soon.

Thanks

Good to know you managed to visit Chatuchak market and managed to get some CPs. As I'm more familiar with neps, I have no idea what's the best place to look for Drosera and Dionaea, wish I could help more.

As I'm not familiar with neps, I can't really tell the varieties offered there too, lol. Anyway, you guys have been such great advisers. I appreciate that. Perhaps I'll explore more next month. Thanks

I decided not to due to my luggage size constraint. Capensis there were all rather "huge"... I got myself a D. Ordensis and an appearently-orange'sh-colour-trap VFT. I believe it's actually a Red Trap. Shall give it more lights and see what is the outcome, keep you posted.

Ah I see. I did see some Nepenthesezzzz hanging in some stores. As for other CPs, rather difficult to get them in my radar as the vehicle was moving 80km/hr *biggrin2*

Wow you saw Nepenthes while going 80kph! I wish I had your eye, I would be on the lookout for wild neps on the road, of course most probably they are not there, but I do get dizzy after a few minutes of looking. :) Thanks for the info a least there are neps there.

Re: Plant Nurseries in Bangkok?

They were hanging rather high in the stores thus it's rather to get seen. Since I passed by that highway everyday, I did spot some stores have Nepenthes though.

Casey, I assume you missed out the third digit there. It's actually 500 Thai Baht. Last digit there is often superscripted.

I hope this will set the record straight.

I've asked them the price. It was indeed 500 Baht with last digit superscripted. Same goes for all nurseries price tags in Chatuchak. No point blind guessing while the person who took the pictures had clarified beforehand. Otherwise, I would have bought 'em in bulk and sell them back here in M'sia right :spinning:

So I guess the price we paid from the recent GP with Exotic Nepenthes is pretty decent... since we don't have to travel all the way to Bangkok.

Thanks for the pics Jason.

Re: Plant Nurseries in Bangkok?

Wow, sorry to have questioned your statement. I have never seen that pricing method used in Thailand before (Including numerous buying trips to Chutujak) in 16 years and am really shocked that that might mean those Purple-leaf Coleus starts are actually 100 baht per pot! :spinning:
Everywhere I have lived and shopped in Thailand uses the number followed by a letter B with a diagonal line through it (upper rt to lower left) signifying Baht. I've never come across this method of pricing things (superscripting the last digit) anywhere here before. If it were not for you having been there and seen it with your own eyes I would never believe it!

Must say it has me rethinking my 'non-commercial' status if those are selling for 500 baht each! :crying: The one with the tag looks like a young viking hybrid (with a big hip/shoulder), while the others surrounding it also look like hybrid crosses...did you find out what they were?

Yes, I did see some price tags are with letter B indicating Thai Baht. However, for this, reason that it's sticking in my head is; I was having the same thought like Casey. But when I asked the seller, he told me it was 500 Thai Baht in which they normally don't put the last digit / they superscripted it.

Come to think about it, if this is the case, the Coleus there are over-priced then. Perhaps they told me a different price since I'm non-local...

Hi Jason,
I tend to agree more with this view... :glare:

Not to say the sellers there are dishonest but this "practice" is very common in Thailand. Pricing will usually double, triple or go up a decimal place when they know you're not local especially places frequented by tourist.

Next time, ask in Thai (if you haven't already did) and you'll get a "fairer" price quoate. My 2 tiny cents...

Jason,

please reconfirm, Chatuchuck is open all week or only on Weekends? You mentioned Wed and Thursday though.

Might be able to visit Bankok and would like to browse there if they are open. Would you know what time the stores open and what time do they close? At least for the plant section? Also can you please confirm again where this section is located, Chatuchuk is so big that I spent like 1 hour in there the first time (wasn't into CP yet) and I didn't even come across any pet section. I was in the Jewelry section and stuff. :(

Chatuchuck is open throughout the week with Wed and Thursday sells only plants. You won't find other shops open during these days, thus no need to worry on direction.

I wouldn't know as I didn't visit there on everyday. Not much plants selling during weekend. Most of 'em rent the place only during Wed & Thurs

Thanks Jason, that last information is still a big help, if they have to rent space wed and thurs. only, then yeah as you said on weekends they might get less priority from shops that sell higher valued items. Wed and Thursdays it is.

They do sell plants during weekends, but not much. Alot of plant nurseries flock to chactuchak during wed and thurs for business exclusively. This is as much as I know. Anyone from Selangor be visiting there please be so kind to drop me a PM. TQ

Re: Plant Nurseries in Bangkok?

Hi, I'd like to report on my Chatuchuck trip.

I went there Dec. 31st which was a holiday in Thailand, Thursday. Arrived around 6am by Taxi from the hotel.

When we arrived, was happy to see that there are lots of plants out and store owners already cleaning and greeting us. But no CPs. We walked around a bit, then I saw some Ventratas, never bothered to ask price, then saw one that had Ceph, and then in the corner (near Soi 34) where the Train station is located, there was one shop that had lots of Nepenthes, some pings and come droseras and Cephs, but no shop owner. We went around a second time, and saw a store selling Mirabilis for 50 baht, no thanks. It was by this time around 7am, and when we got to the corner store that had lots of CPs, the shop owner was still not there, so went back to the one that had ceph, and saw he had 2 neps too. Asked the price, and the species, he said one was N. x Viking and N. Thorellii, how much? 500 baht, no thanks. The ceph was going or 850Baht.

We left at around 730am, with no other stores open except the plant shops and some plant shops are still without their owners, maybe the owner went for breakfast or something. We couldn't stay longer because we had to go back to hotel to get ready for a tour to the Safari/zoo.

I noticed that the plants being sold were mostly not housed in proper shops, but in the "road" or walk area surrounding the actual stores. So yeah most probably they are temporary, in the official map of Chatuchak, there is a plant section but it is not as big as if you go wed. or thurs. maybe... I am not sure what time the whole area opens during weedays though, but as I said when I was there at 730am, most of the actual shops were still closed and those with plants outside might still have their shop owners having breakfast or something.
