Start from 29 Nov until 7 Dec.
But you have to bring your plants on 28 Nov and only can take back on 7 Dec. Please confirm that you can bring the plants on 28 Nov. If not, you have to arrange somebody to bring your plants to Botanical Garden.

CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008?

By the way, just to remind those that I am bringing their plants to Penang. I will be driving back to KL this Sunday, 30 November. Your plants need to be at the Flora Fest for the whole duration of the event, ie. 1 week. Please arrage to pick up the plants on 7 December.

Can those who are going to Penang on the 7th weekend to pick up your plants identify yourself. If possible can you help those who cannot make it to Penang to pick up their plants and bring it back to KL for them? Thanks.

For those who are coming by my house tonight to pass me the plants for the competition, please tag your plants. I do not want to mix up everybody's plants and have plants lost in the process. I'll be home after 9pm tonight. Thanks.

Please tag your plants with the foloowing information:
- Your real name + forum ID if applicable
- Scientific name of your plant

Updated list of contestants. Lim/Monkeycup, not sure if the organising committee have received Fauzi and Lotus Tan's entry.

I just hate it when parents don't let their child go to a floral fest in PENANG. My parents say its too far and I dont' have enough CPs to compete.

Well, the latter was correct......

Hi there penangtan! Have I met you at the competiton? Haa, haa, we have the same surname. Looking forward to see your pictures. Hope other members would also post their pictures as I did not have the opportunity to take many pictures.

I am so tired today. Just arrive back in KL yesterday at about 10 pm +. How I wish I can sleep in and miss work. Calve muscles are also aching from the short hiking trip organised by Ban Aik.

I must say I was truely excited and thrill to meet Dr. Charles Clark and Ch'ien Lee, and of course all the members who went to the competition. Great to see all of you and encouraging to see you there supporting the event.

They are,
Drosera nitidula x occidentalis
Drosera spatulata.giant form,long arm,deep red
D.sessilifolia
D.spatulatha
VTF royal red
N.gracilis
Drosera paleacea ssp trichocaulis (could be, near to N.gracilis)

Re: CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008??

Guys, do come and see the plants if you can. I would say the plants exhibited are nice and a good collection too. The N Truncatas (though didn't win a prize) is HUGE!!!! 18 inches long. You come, I tell the secret of growing which the owner told me. Lim, Shhhh! Don't tell them.

Unidentified's N Albo won 2nd price. Jonathan's Viking Third in the species category. There are some consolation here and there. I'll take some photos when I get back there tomorrow afternoon. In KL at the moment. The rest are not in the forum and are very expert growers. Yes, I would humbly bow before their great green thumb.

Next year, we proposed to have a bigger and more grand show. It could be in May or July or November. So, please prime your plants ready. During lunch with David just now, he shared with us some judging category which will be on a new thread.

Also, this new member Penangtan. He may be young but he is VERY GOOD for his age and his friend too. I am indeed humbled. You young people, Ken, Aaron, Edward, should learn from him. Don't spend your time waiting for new post or who can have the most postings. Focus on your plants.

I just got home from Penang, and after checking on my seedlings, the next thing is checking on our forum! I just want to say a HUGE thank you to all the forum members that made this such a fantastic trip for me! THANK YOU! It was great to finally put faces together with the names and a joy to meet so many enthusiastic CP growers.

I'd urge anyone who has not been to the exhibition yet to try to make it. You will be amazed at the quality, quantity and diversity of the plants being shown. Eric's display and sales area across the street will blow you away and there are many other sellers that have CP's on offer, not to mention orchids, fruit trees and just about any other kind of plant you might be looking for! I even found a green Jade vine, the miracle fruit we have been discussing, a variegated grapefruit (including the fruit itself!) and on and on! The hiking, only moments away from the exhibits is a great chance to see Neps (albo's) in their natural habitat and the food never ends!

In 5 1/2 days I managed to shoot over 800 photos! It'll take me a while to sort through them but I'll try to post when I get caught up around here. I also have to commend all the forum participants for their untiring efforts at both making sure that the exhibition was such a great success and that their guests had such a wonderful and memorable time! Congratulations guys! You put on a show that Penang will not soon forget! By the way, today on my way out of town I saw a Chinese language newspaper with a story on the CP Exhibition with a photo! (I'll post it at a later date)

I can't say it enough; THANK YOU! :1thumbup::1thumbup::1thumbup:

Re: CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008??

Shawn,

Hope the flight back was as good as the one you took to Penang. How's them seedlings? The rest of the garden?

It was truly wonderful having everyone down here in Penang. And never in my wildest dreams I imagine I'll be doing those things I did on the fieldtrips! Talk about being neps. crazy! Thank you very much Ban Aik for taking us all over the island and to some parts of the mainland too & everyone else who paced themselves to help me keep up

I learned so much in those 4 days and I think I'm getting my groove back, so no more neglecting my plants! Thanks Shawn for all the ideas & tips, yeah I know, plant-mad people think alike!

Dr. Clark & Ch'ien Lee was truly a gem, very down to earth. They were so patience answering our non-stop questions, eventhough some of them were downright silly (from yours truly of course )

I had a great time, rain and everything - even forgetting the lung infection that was not completely cured (though surprising the moment I get home I was hacking, coughing like I was choked!)

LETS DO IT AGAIN SOON!

David 2nd December 2008 10:55 AM

Re: CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008??

It was encouraging to see Shawn and Murevarn who travelled so far for this event. Of course for all other members from Malaysia and in Penang who came to support and help out in anyway. You guys/gals know how you are.

I think we must specially give credit and thanks to Lim (picesilim) and Ban Aik (bactrus) who volunteered to help out in so many way.

Lim is there now and everyday until Sunday just to make sure all the plants are taken care off and to answer question from the public about CPs. He was also there before the competition to help out and make sure everything is in order. I am impress by Lim's dedication and responsibility he takes on himself just to make sure everything goes well.

Ban Aik is helping him and he purposely took leave last Thursday and Friday just to take care of me and our guests. So he was running to and from the hotel and competition site like a headless chicken, and being our tour guide to see wild albomarginata in Penang. Ban Aik's hospitality as a host is second to none and for that I am truely grateful. I must thank your wife and baby for kidnapping you from them in the last couple of days. He is on half day leave again today to take shift with Lim and together they help watch the plants and answer questions that the public might have on CPs.

Last but not least, to eric (monkeycup) who is the member of the organising committee for making this event happen. He's the man!

So, please if you can make it, go and see the plants say hi to them.

Haa, haaa, Athene! I was also a little worried by all the questions all of us threw at Dr. Charles and Ch'ien during the talks, dinners and outings... but like you said they were so patient and answered every one of them.

Dr. Charles mentioned to me that he is thinking of carrying out an experiment with regards to mosquito larvae living in pitcher fluid. Remember the question you asked him with regards to mosquito larvae in amps pitchers? He'll like to involve us by asking us to lend him some of our plants for this experiment. I'll post the details or PM a few of you to see if you want to lend your plants when he confirms with me.

Also Ch'ien is organising a trip to see Nepenthes in the wild in Borneo in May or March next year. It'll be a 2-week trip that will cover alot of species and locations. Limited space. So please look out for the announcement here or log on to his website for updates.

Well, by staying up half the night downloading pictures I managed to get some ready to post. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to categorize them, so some are from the Exhibition, some from elsewhere! Hope you enjoy these for the time being and when I get a chance I'll post some others. Shawn, nice to have meet you. It's been a pleasure.

Many thanks to all the volunteers especially to piceslim, bactrus, David, Eric and a few more that I can't remember making this a sucessful exibition, I'm pretty sure a few new victims already fell into the traps of CPs...

Hopefully, more volunteers (including me) will be able to help out for the next event in Penang if there's going to be another one next year. I wished I could have be more helpful...

You can make it Ali next year. You just going to spend 1 day.I was there 12pm till 3pm on Sunday. The floral fest was great especially the cp part. But i was not satisfied with the dirty environment(rubbish bin full and monkey messing the bin's) and the toilet jam which all sort of xxxx coming out.Someone even xxxx in the wash basin.I hope the organiser's notice this and take a corrective action. For starters no food should be allowed in the botanical garden and no one should be allowed to bath in that small waterfall.

so sorry i cant meet up with any of you that weekend, though i was there. managed to see some of the plants on exhibition and spend a ton of money on some plants. i did see you, david, but didnt have time to say hello. i was at monkeycup's booth most of the time, picking up a hell lot of plants from him. just cant resist going there again and again, as i work very close to botanical gardens. lovely heliamphora and cephalotus, even got my friend hooked to these plants. by the way, anyone knows what species is the heliamphora? i havent grown one before but so far it looks good and hasnt withered at all. i thought it may be a hybrid or one of the common ones, nutans or minor.

David 3rd December 2008 05:12 PM

Re: CPs exhibition and competition in Penang Floral Fest 2008??

Arghh... why didn't you say hi to me? I was watching out to see if I could meet up with you there.

Not sure what it was. Tried to ask the two Nep expert but they were not sure too. I think it's because in cultivation most species of Heliam look the same and they are Neps experts not heliam experts. But there is a good chance it is nutans that is a little lack of sunlight... just my guess. Anyone with a plant that has a flower? I saw a few flowering Heliam. with that we can maybe post on ICPS forum and ask them. I think Jonathan is doing that as his plant has flowers.

Yes, you're right, the Heliam seem quite tough and has not withered for me too.

Ahhh.........run away! Pack all your things and flee outstation before Athena smashes me!!! NOOOO.........

Lol. Just joking. What I mean is that all of you look homely and very warm, welcoming people. I just kind of picture people that i have never seen before as someone who is rich and well dressed and COOL.

Not to say that all of you aren't well dressed! In fact, all of you look like nepenthes, drosera, sarracenia and cephalotus. hahaha......as in all of you have your on specialty and unique. Very nice looking group.

I want a heliam and a darlingtonia now I have a terrarium to accomodate my HL cps.

Cheers
