Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Here are a couple of pics of one of my new plants. It is very small at the moment but I can't wait to see the mature pitchers on this plant; the peristome should be huge.

Did you get your plant from Captiveexotics Strath?
I contacted them but they told me it's a lot of paper work.
I want this plant as well but can't get it.
They're new hybrids includes hamata x platychila and ventricosa x northiana.
Get it fast Strath as it will dissapear for very long time!

Thanx for sharing though!;)

Thanks Ali and Aaron. I will definately order those others. I didn't see the hamata hybrid when I ordered the last lot of plants or I would have ordered it then.

The paperwork to legally export is very expensive. I know that captive exotics are agents for Borneo Exotics and i think also Malesiana Tropical. You may be able to source them a little more cheaply through them.

Hi Starth

Nice nep you have there so in what conditions do you grow these seedlings in.

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Hi Ken, thanks. I grow them in a small glass house. This is about six foot long, about 2 foot deep and has a pitched roof that is a bit over 6 foot high (comfortable to stand up in. It has no heating or cooling so the temperature is very similar to those outside. Through the winters day time temp is usually around the mid teens but can be in single figures with the occasional frost. In the summer the temp is usually around 30 degrees with many days above 40. I try to water the plants twice a day (morning and evening) but sometimes it is once a day or once every two days.

The glass house backs onto my shed and receives direct sunlight all morning until mid afternoon. To try and offset some of the heat I am now growing my plants in open sided pots (you can sort of see this in the pics above) with a mix of sphagnum, perlite and small pine bark. The evaporation helps to cool the roots in hot weather.

Veitchii x platychia (lowland x intermediate) can be grow as either lowland or highland.
I don't think there would be a problem growing this plant too!

Hi Ali

If its a lowland x intermediate then in my opinion it should be grown in lowland conditions with maybe slightly cool nights.

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Platychilla is an intermediate plant growing i think to around 1400 meters. Veitchii is sold as either a lowland plant or a highland plant (to around 1200m) so more likely an intermediate. I haven't grown the plant for very long but it appears to be settling in very well with my highland plants.

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Ken,
It can be grown either ways becaue the both plants seems like not to bother about the temperature anyway.(certainly not extreme weathers though)

Strath,

Do you know whether they veitchii used in this cross is either highland or lowland?

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Ali,
Just to inform, both BE and MT have this cross for sale, whether it's still available that I'm not sure. I got mine from Fauzi which originated from MT. I believe the MT cross was done by C. Lee.

Also, Eric also have a few L size of this cross from MT. Hope this help.

Strath's nep might be a BE's cross coz of the reddish coloration. That's the info I have gather from the internet. Perhaps you can confirm this with captive exotic, Strath?? BE use a H/L veitchii with striped peristome for this cross.

Thanx for the info Cpnut,
Well Eric's veitchii x platychila has purple peristome if i'm not mistaken and it's from single clone right?

I'll confirm with MT first though.I'll keep you updated!

You're welcome Nova, I believe all MT's veitchii x platychila should be clones but not sure how many clones they have from this cross, maybe you can ask Juliana @ MT?? Please keep us updated.

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Hi Robert,

I just confirmed with Juliana.According to her the cross was made with highland veitchii as the mother plant. She also wrote that veitchii x platychila grows equally in H/L and L/L conditions.

I also asked her to show a pic of the veichii. So what are you waiting for guys, let's get one.

Good for you Robert,

I will get mine soon.Juliana doesn't really remember what veitchii was used in the cross but here's a pic of their veitchii x platychila.

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

I've got the one from BE. IIRC they were seedgrown. So there'll be some nice variety around. They aren't anymore on their list.
It's growing nice and steady in my basement room with about 21°C daytime and 16°C nighttime. It was last year for half a year in the greenhouse where it got sometimes over 40°C day and 7°C night. It was growing all the time nice and steady. Here are some photos:

Wow Boris,

Your plant have some beauty hidden in it.Hope it grows well for you though.

Thanx!

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Yes atm the pitchers are looking a bit boring but I'd say that it hasn't reached the age that the veitchii in it is old enough to show it's mature features like the great peristome. At least that's the experience I did with chaniana x veitchii. It had to reach some size and age to start producing pitchers that are looking really nice.

Aliamyz 28th March 2009 07:15 PM

Re: Nepenthes veitchii x platychilla

Yes Boris,
We can under estimate veitchii hybrids when they are immature.
