N. Mirabilis ???
I discovered that a couple of what I was told were mirabilis that were given to me by a friend some time ago, have a different leaf veination than any others I have seen. Anybody recognize this? I'll add a picture of an upper from one of the other plants as well.

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
shawn, looking at the leaves and pitchers, i'm inclined to think your plants might be a hybrid of mirabilis and raff or maybe even mirabilis and x hookeriana.

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
If that's the case, you'll get a xCoccinea but these is green though1

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
Hi Ali
Well now that you say yes you get a coccinea.....(which i wanna get one)...But coccineas are not green in colour....... Ken |

this is unlike the case where every N. raff x amp (or the reverse) are all N. x hookerianas (or mirablis x amp = x kuchingensis). It's slightly messy because in the 1800s, 1900s when new neps were being discovered and named, hybrids were also being made in greenhouses in europe then. so the naming the plants was not applied very consistently. but to go back the shawn's plants, i think its more likely to be a hybrid of mirabilis and raff and a remote possibility of it being a mirabilis x x hookeriana because the 'teeth' and neck on the uppers shows a fair bit of raff traits. |
Re: N. Mirabilis ???
Thanks Hongrui! I've sent a couple pictures off to the other 'experts' as well, so will post their verdict when I get it.

Just for comparison, this is the shot of lower pitcher of mirabilis that I got from Thailand

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
It could just be genetic diversity in the species; sometimes an unusual one stands out, and is referred to as a "sport". - Rich

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
CPNut - It's been raining too hard to take pictures but I will when it lets up. Do you have a shot showing the leaves on your plant (like my first shot)? Like Hongrui said, it has the patterning/veining like a raff leaf that I don't see as pronounced on my other mirabilis plants.

Your wish is my command
Attachment 623 I think there's some difference but mine is only producing lower pitchers right now. |
Re: N. Mirabilis ???
There are SOOOooooo many forms of N. mirabilis all over the distribution map, perhaps the most abundant and common of all species, and to me, I would just write it off as a pure N. mirabilis, but a nice form. :1thumbup: - Rich

Re: N. Mirabilis ???
I agree, there are soooo many forms! CPNut - thanks, yours shows 3 main vein-like lines on the top side of the leaf, now take a look at the first of my pictures on the first page. Probably as Rich said, just another N. mirabilis! I used to not even bother with them but found thast they are a great first CP to use as give-aways, as even newbies have a hard time killing them!
