Ok, this is a continuation from the experiment that I mentioned in Cindy's thread on byblis seed germination. Thought it would be good to start a new thread.

Anyway, I've got some results:

Stem cuttings about 1.5 inch long - new shoots have appeared just at the joint between the leaf base and stem.

Leaf cuttings - still not baby plantlets but the leaf is still alive

Original stem with roots about 2 inches - still has dews and the stem looks like it is still alife. However, no new shoots from the stems yet.

below are some pictures.

Looks like stems cuttings works and is quite easy. So now we have another option besides cracking our heads trying to germinate the seeds that are so unpridictable.

I am hopping for the leaf cuttings to give some plantlets. Fingers cross. I think it might be difficult as the leaf are so fine. Also I've not heard of anyone getting plantlets from byblis leaf. I have chopped 3 of my plants and planted almost all the leaves. Lets see if any of these give some positive results.

Tarence, how's your leaf cuttings coming along? Any good news?

Actually that's about it. Did not do anything else. Just push the cuttings into the media. but there were 2 cuttings that I did that were only 1 inche long. They did not survive. Only those that were 1.5 inch long. Wanted to find out. So now I know. Some of these stems have 2 growing points. Repotted a few of them last weekend. Saw some roots on the cuttings http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif So happy.

I treat the cuttinigs similar to how I treat my nepenthes cuttings, ie. cut the stems, leaves cut into half, push into media, keep in high humidity under bright light.

Do u use rooting hormone?
Guess i'll try it out when my byblis ****es have grown into an adult plant http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif

Nope, I did not try with rooting hormone. Hmm, should have tried on one of the cuttings. But I think no need since they root so well on their own. I'll try on my next cutting.

Just checked the leaf cuttings yesterday. Still alive but not ****es. The stem on the original plant have given out an off shoot.

Will post some pictures in the next few days when I borrow a camera.

Cindy, looking forwards to your pictures. http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif

Here are the latest pictures of the cuttings. I have repoted some of them and added potting media on some. However, still negative progress on the leaf cuttings http://s3.images.proboards.com/undecided.gif

These are the 1.5 inch cuttings...

Here's the original plant stem. New shoots appearing at the sides...

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...s/RIMG6580.jpg

These are the tip of the cuttings... They have even started to flower. Amazing plants. I wonder... since I cut these from an adult plant, will they remain stunted or continue to grow. I guess they'll grow. Would be great if these cuttings remain low. Then we have Bongsai Byblis! http://s3.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Ok, just to update everyone on my byblis. The original plant stem died. All 3 of them. http://s3.images.proboards.com/cry.gif I think perhaps there should be some leaves left or maybe in the future cut it further up or leave it longer in lenght.

Hmm, but I don't understand why stem cuttings I made of the plants survive when there was not roots and the cuttings are only 1.5 inches long. However, the stem cuttings do have leaves. Maybe that is what makes the difference. It just reminds me of Nepenthes cuttings. The mother stem would die too if we cut too near the media leaving it without leaves. However, I've had very old plants that did not die.

The rest of the cuttings are growing well... still hopping that the cuttings will not be so tall as the mother plant so that I can have my "bongsai" byblis... haa, haaa, haaa...

just to share what i discovered......i trimmed away all the dead branches of my byblis last weekend......and after that, all of them kinda collapsed. i think it is best to leave the byblis as they are & not clean them up.

the dead branches serve to support the byblis against strong wind & also rain.

I tried the stem cutting when my plant was infested with mealy bug - I know, I know it's an irony, but it's true! they were on the non-sticky parts of the stem. Got two cutting, the main plant died, so did the cuttings! http://s3.images.proboards.com/embarassed.gif

Now I'm left with a whole bunch of seeds but no plant! http://s3.images.proboards.com/angry.gif

So sorry to hear that Athene. I keep my stem cuttings totally sealled in a pastic container and use just artificial lights.

Anyway, just to update everyone. The stem cuttings does not stay short as I wanted them. They grow as another new plant and vine just like the parent plant. So no "bongsai" byblis in the making. http://s3.images.proboards.com/angry.gif

Re: David: B. liniflora stem cutting/leaf experiment

David, I just took a growth tip cutting because the plant is hitting the lights. For the stem cuttings you took, did they continue flowering? And did the flowers remain as large?

What I notice is that as the plant grows, the flowers get larger. Then they start becoming smaller as the plants age. Just wondering if it is an internal clock reset when the plant is repotted as a cutting.

Re: David: B. liniflora stem cutting/leaf experiment

It seems to me that it is an internal clock reset when the plant is re potted as a cutting. The vine continue to grow to as large as the original plant size, ie. the original plant from seed. It also flowers profusely. However, I did not actually noticed the flower size or compare the size from the seed grown plant and the cutting.

Thanks, David. Seems that it's time I try it out on my Byblis. :1thumbup:

I trimmed off three growing tips so far. Each about 1.5" to 2" tall and pushed the cut end into LFS.

All three seems to be quite happy. I'll update again with photos later.
