First ping flower

My first and only ping (Ping. primuliflora) has decided to give me 1 bloom.. :2thumbup:I think its quite cute, although the flower is pretty simple. BTW, do pings die back after flowering? I hope it doesn't..

And the 'terrarium' its growing in, with a few begonias, orchids, 1 bromeliad, Drosera adalae, a pink raff, and a green Nep. sanguinea..

Re: First ping flower

Ken, there are 2 main types of begonias. Flowering begonias, which can have single or multilayered flowers, and foliage begonias, which are grown for their leaves. I grow foliage begonias, most are descendants from Begonia rex. Begonias are pretty interesting as they can grow from their leaves. Just take an old leaf and stick it into a pot of soil, and pretty soon you'll get a new plant (just like African violets). Oh, either you mean the staghorn fern (Platycerium, which is an epiphyte) or the fishtail fern (genus Microsorium, which has leaves that grow upward).. :)

Hi

So those heart shaped fleshy leaf plant are foliage begonias??? Or are they a little hard to find? Anyways the lady at the jusco department said in malay that is deer horn something so thats why i thought it was a staghorn fern but when i search for that fern the staghorn has leaves facing down while the one i saw has a green "base" which covers 90% of the pot and 2 leabes facing side to upwards...Can they take funn sun? Cos they look neat and might give a little more tropical look :D

Generally speaking no. Of course if any plant is stressed prior to flowering than it could lead to a set back or death of the plant. Your plant looks very healthy in the picture so I wouldn't worry about it. Those of my pi9ng's that flowered this year have doubled in sizr since finishing flowering.

Do this one go dry dormant?

Re: First ping flower

Weser goes dormant. When it is dormant you can use the noncarnivorous leaves to propagate your plant. It goes dormant and flowers in the winter.

I have this plant and it has been flowering since i think about the end of November. I have had it for over a year and hasn't really had a true dormant stage. It's growth slowed over winter and it had a reduced size. I am not sure how it would react in tropical conditoins. I would think that a drier period would benefit the plant.
