Re: N.truncata SOS

Any reasons you're using charcoal as media? Or they're just topping.

root probelm, maybe shock:crying:

Re: N.truncata SOS

if the plant is potted in straight charcoal then I guess its dehydration, the charcoal is too
large to keep the roots moist.

winterkid 17th May 2011 06:51 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

actually I put about 80% charcoal and the rest is peat.. . . . and then when I open a few pieces of charcoal I can see that it is stil moist.

and then how do I cure it now ? I need help asap

winterkid 17th May 2011 06:56 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

and the new leaf are now fully brown . . :crying:

can they be recovered?

kepikimut 17th May 2011 07:20 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

use 80% charcoal and the rest is peat???

why use peat? not spaghnum moss or choco chip??

winterkid 17th May 2011 07:24 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

is it better to use lfs? then I will change it after it is stable.. . . . but is there hope to cure it? . .

nep masters HELP!

Re: N.truncata SOS

WOW, if you ask me, I think that you might have damaged the root badly during transplant. You better repot it NOW to a more water retrofits media and put it in a plastic bag to increase humidity. However, don't EVER overwater it. It's in a very bad condition now. :(

Re: N.truncata SOS

the weather here at my place is very unpredictable......sometimes rain and sometimes shine......
and what should i use as medium for it?????
and was stuck in the post office for about 3-5 days........
ad when i opened it it was in a better condition than now but it has a few strands of LFS in its roots so do i still need to repot it??:crying::crying::crying:
i really need to cure it ASAP

Re: N.truncata SOS

A mix of LFS with coco chips is very good. You can also try burnt earth with peat moss at a mix of 70% burnt eath and 30% peat. Or you can just crush the charcoal to much smaller pieces (1cm) and mix with LFS. Either way, the media must be well drained but not too dry like the one you are currently using. Put in a plastic bag and don't give up! Good luck.

Re: N.truncata SOS

i think it will be better for you to change it into sphagnum, pearlite and cocochips media if possible, as the plant are used to moist media, so sudden change of the composition of media will make them look dead, as i am using full coconut peat to plant them, bag them tight, leave at shade, plus changing the media should help(30%sphagnum moss,40-60%pearlite,the rest you can use chunky media

winterkid 17th May 2011 09:37 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

hey guys.....
exam is near and i cant find any coco chips near my house ....
i only got some LFS loads of perlite and Peat ..
what is the best ratio i should use?
and is this i good time to repot it or should i wait for it to recover
????

allenphoon 17th May 2011 09:44 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

for the chunky media, you can use charcoal instead

winterkid 17th May 2011 09:47 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

So now i can use 50%charcoal 50%LFS?
or i can use 70%charcoal 30%Lfs?
this is a truncata but unknown type :crying::crying:

Re: N.truncata SOS

The key is to stop it from further dehydration and hope for the best.
Avoid direct sunlight for the moment.

winterkid 17th May 2011 10:16 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

now i put it under my lighting system.......
i think it can handle it ....hopefully it survives:crying::crying:

Re: N.truncata SOS

for me this one is very dehydrated......... n. truncata response very slow to any media rectification and this one has overdo on the "epiphytic" side as the charcoal are too chunky....this media is suitable for orchid i'm afraid...

change the media, water till moist, bag up to increase the humidity and place it in a bright but shaded spot..ooh and dont forget to snip off a little bit of plastic bag tip to drain out the access water....

my old n. truncata has it growing tip damaged by fallen mango and it stop growing for almost 6 months!! started to regrow but it seems like it take ages just to produce 3 pathetic looking leaves....they are the "snail" in the neps world in terms of growing.....this is based from my growing experience....not sure of others.

winterkid 18th May 2011 04:32 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

I have done as told.
the medium now is 60%1cm charcoal bits and 40 lfs.
wish me luck guys.*biggrin2*

edwardyeeks 18th May 2011 05:56 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

Did you make your charcoal bits smaller?

Yes kevyn, truncata is really very slow when recovering from repotting or root shock. Mine took one and a half months to settle down compared to others which only took 2-3 weeks.

winterkid 18th May 2011 07:11 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

ya the bits now are 2cm big . .
and there are lfs mixed in it too*biggrin2*

the truncata that has got its growing tip/ point severed... i strongly disagree that it has anything to do with repotting or root shock...others (sp and hybrid) do fairly well after repotting or shock while on their way to my place via post...

do not have many pots of truncatas to do comparison though.....

edwardyeeks 22nd May 2011 04:29 PM

Re: N.truncata SOS

So far, if a nep's growing tip blacken or sever, it's due to root rot. It doesn't happen due during posting or repotting. The only way it happens is if you rip out all the roots (which I don't think anyone would be willing to do!) or if the media you use holds too much water. My veitchii was a good example. Too much peat and overwatering caused the growing tip to blacken. A second one appeared which made two normal leaves (no pitchers) and then it slowly recovered. Phew....

Re: N.truncata SOS

young man, i mentioned the tip was severed by a fallen mango (fruit) so nothing to do with overwatering or handling issue....period.
