my northiana

This northiana was repotted 4 months ago to a larger pot, the old pitchers dried up and now newer and bigger pitchers were formed.

The thin layer sphagnum moss were dressed on top for humidity and keep the roots cool, beneath were all coarse clay.

This new developing pitcher is going to be longer, aprox.4", perhaps longer when fully opened.

Nice northiana you have there.Any pictures of the inside coarse clay? How often you water them as coarse clay wont keep much water.

Dear Robert,

Nice pitchers that you have there. I can't help noticing that it's quite different from mine.

4" pitchers, about the same as mine... :D

Also, yours tend to be more elongated while mine is abit fatter.

Re: my northiana

Thanks for the comment everyone. Yup, Isaac , i notice the slight difference between our pitchers.

Alien, the coarse clay look like the pic below though this was from another pot. I water it everyday usually in the late evening. Coarse clay has more space inbetween therefore well aerated. It retains moisture due to its porous properties. northiana's leaves are thicker and retian water for it to survive longer dry spell and can withstand 2-3 days without watering.

Re: my northiana

Nice northiana Robert, how long have you had it? Did you grow it in shades? Sorry for asking so many questions... Thanks.

Yes, Fauzi do have small size northiana and it's not very expensive for that species, I just got it from him recently and already on the way forming a new pticher...

TS 14th November 2008 08:29 PM

Re: my northiana

Yeah Robert, your northiana is elongated form. Nice.
The pitchers are getting bigger, nearly 4"! Oooo.. how impressive. :1thumbup:
After I placed mine at a more sunny spot, it's now started to produce bigger pitchers too. But those new tiny pitchers (newly formed) that get direct sun light just don't balloon up but pitchers that grow under the weeds. I wonder if this is really caused by the heat of the direct sun. Will still observe.

Robert 20th November 2008 02:19 PM

Re: my northiana

TS it's likely caused by the heat.

check today the unopen pitcher now opened and touching 4" length, slightly longer than the previous.

Re: my northiana

Nice! its growing bigger and taller! Just one question, do you use LFS as one of the media for your northiana? Because after reading the savage garden book by peter d'amato, it is said that acidic soil like LFS will stunt northiana's growth.

Cheers

NepNut 20th November 2008 02:47 PM

Re: my northiana

Edward,
Robert already stated he only use LFS as top dressing in his first post...

Robert 20th November 2008 02:48 PM

Re: my northiana

Thanks for the question. I used sphagnum as toppings and underneath were all coarse clay.

Ooohhh, sorry, forgot. Is course clay actually alkaline? Maybe I can start northiana.

Re: my northiana

Yeah i saw a couple of northiana there also.............But my main interest was N sumatrana hehehehe.......I didn't get it cos instead i went for more neps....Wanted to take easier neps before i try out the harder ones....Oh yeah which is harder to grow sumatrana or northiana??

Ken

edwardyeeks 20th November 2008 08:42 PM

Re: my northiana

Northiana is a slow grower but fairly easy to grow. Only that it doesn't like acidic soil like LFS. sumatrana is rare as it is lately discovered as endangered. If you are impatient, then sumatrana is the best. But northiana is like a LL rajah.

Cheers

kentosaurs 20th November 2008 08:48 PM

Re: my northiana

Well sumatrana to me sounds much more easier to be grown by looking at the people growing them..but as you said northiana are slower growers..........Yeah i know that northiana likes limestone if i'm not wrong.......I thought sumatrana could rival northiana but i guess i'm wrong....Which one are more sensitive to light....What i mean is which needs more shaded conditions

Ken

edwardyeeks 20th November 2008 08:55 PM

Re: my northiana

Wel, both have mostly the same light requirement like other neps, but don't simply move northiana around when it has already acclamatized. It will end up in VERY slow growth. I told Fauzi that I will buy from him northiana later since they are wee small and young.

Cheers

isaacgoh 20th November 2008 11:58 PM

Re: my northiana

I think you can't compare Sumatrana with Northiana, both are different in nature and league.

Growing Northiana has its fair share of challenges, but if you are patient and observant to your plant's needs, nothing is impossible, even in a polluted and hazy KL city's apartment balcony.

Finally, I went one better on my sifu. :D

Wah edward chill don't make your growlist expand so fast.....What i meant was...Slowly learn how to care for the easier ones first then slowly move to the top...But well if you think you can make it thrive like all the si fu here then no prob go ahead!!

Re: my northiana

Guys,

I just reused the old pictures I had posted before. It was the same bunch.

Now, some new pitchers have come and gone, but it's still developing larger and larger pitchers. Lately, one new pitcher ended up nearer the balcony railing and got a lot of the morning sun. The colour is darker red and nicer, I'll wait for it to stop growing before taking a picture. All the pitchers tends to be "fatter" as compared to Robert's. It could be that mine is thinking that it is a "basal" plant because all the pitchers settles nicely on pots nearby.

I had this plant for 2 years + now, it was planted from cutting from a friend. I have no idea how old the original plant is.

edwardyeeks 21st November 2008 11:29 AM

Re: my northiana

I didn't know plants could think......well, you are lucky that you got a cuting from your friend. I am still trying to get a hang of nep cutting, my miranda cutting was a liitle failure where the new young roots stuck to the sides of the cutting and died. I reused the cutting again.

I wonder which is the best media for northiana? I will be tackling another type first before northiana.

Cheers

plantlover 21st November 2008 02:06 PM

Re: my northiana

Yah, what media is more suitable.

Robert 21st November 2008 03:00 PM

Re: my northiana

a very well drain media 60%peat /40% perlite, 100% coarse burnt clay or unburnt clay.

NepNut 24th November 2008 02:55 PM

Re: my northiana

Robert, do you think adding seashell chips or broken marble chips will help to maintain the alkalinity of the medium after the potting mix is aged (2-3 years)?? Is it neccessary to do so?? Thanks.
