My nep "prison" ^_^

Just sharing some experience for setting up a tiny scale nep "prison". My intention is to setup a place just for L/L neps where it'll be always wet and humid. This place will be fully automated interms of watering via water springkler and mister/fogger powered by water pump and controlled by timer.

Specification :
Dimension : 17ft (width) x 30ft (length) x 9ft (height)

Shading net : Altenate Green (70%) and Black (50%).

Water Tank : 100gal (actual capacity ~80%)

Water pump :
1) Submersible pump - 0.3hp, 0.7 barr pressure to pump water springkler
2) Centrifugal pump (external) - 1hp, 2.5 barr pressure to pump mister/fogger

Springkler Nozzle : 18 pcs

Mister/Fogger Nozzle : 22 pcs (4-way) 10 pcs (1-way)

These are the pics... this project started in early July and it's now completed. I'm in the process of transfering the prisoners... errr plants *biggrin2* to the new place now...

Wahhh....(jaw drop) you has taken it to the next level...again.:1thumbup: A really huge project as i had envisioned. You gonna need to hire a few bangla to help you take care of your plants:biggrin:

Just wondering...why do you need both the sprinkler and misting/fogger when one will do? And how much it cost you.

Empty lots at the back for phase 2(HL) project kah.

temp and humidity - any readings taken before and after the misting. For such setups intermediate neps will be happy to be the "prisoners".

Yaaaaaeeeeehhhhh Robert! As Kent says, surely this is a sign of the terminal illness 'nepitis'! May it be a lifelong case! Hee, hee, hee. Somebody just called me yesterday and offered another greenhouse that they no longer use...free for the moving! I explained that it's been a few months since we put up the last one and the rest are already overflowing so I'm headed over to have a look today!

Hey, I don't have any better plan (yet) but I used those zip-ties for my irrigation lines as well and yesterday noticed that they have all become brittle and are 'snapping'. Just something to think about before the place is too full to get a ladder in!

So, when are you coming up with your truck? I need some space - and you've got it now!

Congratulations!

amazing job, im so envious about this setup... my collection is getting large and watering
them daily has been a chore, its takes about 1hr of my time daily just to do it.... im so
glad that its the rainy season here so that gives me a lot of break from the watering and
more time admiring the plants. But im so desperately in need of some watering setup
and yours is an inspiration for me. Hopefully I can have my own watering system done
before the summer comes next year. Oh please do post photo when you have finally
transfered the prisoners.

There's no return bro... for me anyway.... *biggrin2* Still a long long way to go even to consider to setup a nursery :shy: Just collecting breeding stock now...

It's just a tiny growing space mainly to grow my breeding stock into adulthood. At least the watering was automated, so only need 1 bangla... ME *biggrin2* to tidy up things and run the place. This project costed my an arm and a leg :crying: but at least I don't have to be there everyday to care for it.

Arrr... I also thought I could live without the springkler.... but I'm wrong. As you know, the mist is very fine droplets of water and everything will work fine in enclosed environment. When there's movement of air (wind), it'll be blown away in an instance.... That's what happen to my place... When there's wind, part of the place will stay dry because the mist can't reach it. Since air movement also very important in nep cultivation, I can't really "bag" up the whole place until it's wind proof.... *biggrin2*

So for those that wanted to setup a growing space (especially in open ourdoor area) and was thinking of only using mist to water your plants, think again...

Not yet taken any reading, my intention is to keep this place wet and humid... intended more to simulate natural LL growing environment. But... no harm trying some intermediate nep species/hybrids... always curious... *biggrin2*

Thanks Shawn... Congrats to you too for yet needing another shade house.... You're the MAN !!

Yup, I knew those plastic cable tie will become brittle after exposed to sunglight. One of my worker adviced me to use a kind of plastic rope, he said those will last at least a few years compared to these cable ties... you should try it... I'll see if I can grab a pic to show you. At least the cable ties are easy to use eventhough it's not as long lasting when used outdoor....

Thanks for the offer Shawn, I would really love to get a truck to unload your neps but the reason why I built this place is because I already ran out of growing space at my home... if I move all my plants fr home to this new place... it'll be full... *biggrin2*

Don't be envious... I also started like everyone else but decided to take it up to another level after a while... *biggrin2*

Yup, I also felt the same way about manually watering my plants. When my collection is small, I still can managed to water them twice a day but as your collection grow... It will take lots of your time just to water every nep and leave you no time to even admire your plants... You should seriously consider investing in watering solution so you have more time to do other things for you plants.... It's a win-win solution. *biggrin2*

May I know the time set for the watering system?

Do the position face to South (if base on kitchen door) ?

The door face East, so can recieve sunlight from morning till ~3-4pm.

For timer setting,

Water springkler - 5 minutes ON at 9am

Misting/Fogging - more complicated.... it's roughly 1 minute every hour fr 11am to 5pm, after 6pm it's 1 minute ever 3 hrs until 11pm. After 11pm till 7am is 1 minute every 4 hrs. I think that's about correct.... still playing around with the timer to find the best settings. :shy:

Thanks Casey...

It's not that complicated... just 2 different timers for 2 different pumps. *biggrin2*

I will take a shot of my analog timer system later.... I still prefer analog timer... I guess I'm old fashioned... *biggrin2*

If not mistaken only digital timer have minimum setting of 1 min. Analog timer normally 25mins but i could be wrong.

NepNut 11th August 2010 01:55 AM

Re: My nep "prison" ^_^

Tekor, you're absolutely correct *biggrin2*

Actually the smallest timer interval I could find on market for analog is 15 minutes. To do less than 15 minute, you need to modify a little... after modification can do less than 1 minute... *biggrin2* Will show more when I have a chance to take a shot of my timer box.

Dear sifu,

Thank for sharing.

May I know on :

1. Every time volume discharde of water for water springkler and misting. As I understanding, in market we can find few different type but the control was on the volume.

2. The power (cc) for this 2 pumps.

Thank you

This is the heart and soul of my watering system, the timer system...

The whole setup in a weatherproof metal box
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1291/timerbox1.jpg

Analog Timer with built in quartz (Smallest interval 30 minutes for this unit)
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7356/timerbox2.jpg

This is the device making it possible to do time interval from 0 mintures to 10 minutes *biggrin2*. It's called time delay relay (if not mistaken). Once the analog timer trigger ON, this timer will also power ON for the duration of the programmed time interval (As shown on the dial).

Hi LJ,

This is my external pump.... I installed a ball valve on the output to be able to control the flow volume.
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/9...ternalpump.jpg

1) I don't have that information for the nozzle head. I found the most important thing is to make sure your pump have enough pressure (barr) to pump the water and make sure all nozzle is working.

2) Please refer to the first post, I already stated the power (hp) for the pumps I used.

Hope this help. Thanks.

My grow area is not that big, but it takes a lot of time watering the plants and less time
appreciating them.... so im planning to put up a similar setup to yours, but maybe with
out the automated watering thing..... I dont mind turning on a faucet and do something
else for a few minutes.... of course an automated watering system is nice, if the budget
permits i would definitely add that. Hopefully if all goes well I can have this setup
before summer of next year.

About RM700+, it's IP44 rating, weatherproof not waterproof. Still better to find something to cover the electrical component panel.

Haha.... My system very low tech... don't have sensor to turn off if got rain... *biggrin2*

Anyway it's raining almost everyday now, so I turn it off. Automatic watering system will be very useful when it's dry season (especially beginning of the year @ Nothern Peninsular Malaysia) or in enclosed place where rain water will be block.

Re: My nep "prison" ^_^

I really don't know whether there's a sensor to sense rain drops. I do know there's humidity sensor that can be used to trigger on/off.

If really wanted to do it... maybe can modify alarm panel with SIM card that support I/O function and use h/p to trigger on / off. That's what I can think of.... but is it neccessary?? May I know what are you trying to do ??

IMHO, I think it's easier if you just built transparent plastic shelter to block the rain and 100% use your watering system to water your plants....

Dear Sifu,

After visit to your house, I do plant to build 'green house' for my CPs. and Tillandsia. I do facing some problem to build it like control the humidity, watering system control, etc. Other reason I stop it because busy on my job and now I needs to start ASAP because I do not have space for my CPs.

I do ask around at SP and Pria area on transparent plastic, majority feedback is either I order 1 'roll' and the goods will ship from Melaka factory or I direct go to Cameron Highland to get it.

1 of my friend do share on the sensor to sense rain drops but he did not know where to get it because he just know the product was from Australia.

If I can find a method on control the watering system, this will help on saving money for water bill:shy:

Hi LJ,
Hahaha... the private nep garden in my house even more low tech... no automated system at all, 100% "Man Powered" *biggrin2*

If you really wanted to save water bill (which I don't think it's really that expensive unless you have acres of land to water...), you should setup water tank to keep rain water, this will however use up some space and $$$. If this place of your's is at your home, I think just manually turning on/off will be enough to save you some water bill especially during rainy season... unless this is at another site then it'll be troublesome to manually turn it on/off.

Another method that it's good and can save water, you can consider installing dripping system to water your plants.

If you're looking at all these automatic watering system... prepare to spend some $$$ coz fully automated system is not cheap.... :sweating: and make sure you can find the replacement parts easily. My tiny 2 cents...

Very healthy looking plants and neatly arranged too.:1thumbup: As for the fence, i think orchids will be the obvious choice if you don't want the sunlight completely blocked.

One word of caution though...beware of the local creeper plants as they will overwhelmed the whole structures if care is not taken to get rid of them sooner:biggrin:

ps: if the prison deparment come to visit, you'll be in serious troubles for overcrowding. I'm willing to help you though....just transfer half your prisoners to my place*biggrin2*

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Teoh,
Thanks for the heads up, I did noticed that (creeper plants) starting to creep up the fences even before the place wasn't yet finished. I already sprayed herbicide on the outside of the fence to control the weeds... *biggrin2*

Lookin' great! Amazing how fast they fill up isn't it? Have you started clearing the land next door yet? It won't be long now and you'll be looking to expand! Greenhouse-itus is every bit as bad as CP-itus and there's no cure on the horizon!

Robert, I vote for tills and Spanish moss, since you mention about not wanting any obstruction on the sunlight...for the shadier areas you could probably go for ferns like Platys and other exotic plants...just my thoughts..*biggrin2*

Hi Alvin,
Thanks for your suggestions. For tills I already consulted our tills sifu aka Andy, he mentioned my place might be too wet for them and I agreed.... too bad :crying:

I'm considering orchids and ferns now... perhaps making a "living wall" on the north and south facing fence would be nice too...*biggrin2*

Aarrrr so many things, so little time... :sweating:
