sarracenia potting media
Hi everyone,
Noticed that sarracenia is very sensitive with it's potting media and it can be potted with sphagnum only. Some species tend to grow bigger so since the sphagnum is expensive, how can i buy so many sphagnum to pot the seedlings that's germinated? I can't afford to buy so many sphagnum so anyone has cheap potting media suggestions? |
Re: sarracenia potting media
Do you mean sphagnum moss or peat? You could try a very fine sand mix that is close to sphagnum.

Re: sarracenia potting media
I use the moss because they like to be waterlogged?

Re: sarracenia potting media
I use a mix of 50:50 peat moss and sand. Stand the pot in a couple of inches of water and they grow fine.

Re: sarracenia potting media
Mix the sphagnum with something else, like sand, perlite, stones(yes, seriously) and if you've got the space, grow your own sphagnum. You won't be able to meet all your sphagnum needs by growing your own, but it can lighten the load, plus you'll have live sphagnum to play around with for the more cranky CPs.
