C way,
I only got one campa and it's going to open very soon, probably too late this time to make a species cross.

Just collect the pollen when it's available. Pollen can be store 6-9 months if you keep it nicely.

HI, All,
I would like to ask, if the seeds germinated, when can we remove the cover(for high humidity), to expose the seeds to environment?

when they have attained 3-4 healthy leaves about 2" across. Although you may leave it as it's until you're very sure of the health and able to stand the natural open conds.

The humidity in the enclosed container is always higher than the outside environment, not the opposite as mentioned.

Hi, Robert Thanks.
2 inches is quite big size liao.
The growing rate is very very slow, I think need to wait for long time:unsure:

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

hi all again, got a bit of problem with seed propagation...

my set up, a small pot with sphagnum moss with 1 cm water level in a container with cover, the cover is not tight, I let it be loose, till now have been near to 2 weeks, a few of the seeds has mold on it...

what seems to be the problem that causes mold? thanks

kentosaurs 22nd September 2010 10:38 PM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

I personally just put them in a container box without the cover outdoors...Just mist everyday once or 2 days once...

Robert 23rd September 2010 12:04 AM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

soo, it was too wet and cause the mold. you've to get rid of the water. The media need to be moist [ not wet or standing on water ]. It's fine to use cover to get the seeds to germinate, and not alot of water is needed to moisten the media, since water is recycle within by evaporation and condensation.

you will be opening the cover to check the progress regularly but make sure the media don't dry out.

see what you've done, you've some work to do now*biggrin2*. pick out the affected seeds and clean them by placing in small container with water, add a drop of washing detergent and give a good shake. once done place seeds in another container with sterile water, swirl it to clean excess impurities from the seeds. Alternatively use fungicide.

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

thanks a lot, will clear those water, unfortunately I've throw away those with mold...just 3 if not mistaken

is it alright that I close the cover tight and open it once a day or does it need good air circulation?

thanks a lot :)

NepNut 23rd September 2010 01:44 AM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

Try to make some holes on the cover, it'll help with ventilation yet still able t o maintain high humidity with lower chance of getting mold outbreak...

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

I don't cover anymore my seeds since a good while because I always got probs with algae and mold. I did some tests with my own harvested seeds. So I got lots of them and the risk of loosing some precious seeds wasn't so high. There was nearly no difference in the germination rate. The covered seeds didn't even germinated faster what I would have expected.

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

i just leave them...but some still germinated even attack by mold....haha

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

Just another method germinating seeds. I just tried once and it worked nice. Here is now my second try with this method. You need living sphagnum for this and you have to chop it very fine. So it won't start overgrowing the seeds. Living sphagnum is anti-fungicide and no algae will grow on it.
Just put the fine chopped living sphagnum in a petri-dish, close it and open once a day the petri-dish to let some fresh air come in.

cool!ur really good at this guys!.also,u can sterilize ur media to avoid algae, mould growth on the media.i always sterilize mine and never grow algae and mould on it.

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

interesting, but superbly expensive...

Boris 4th October 2010 09:16 AM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

That isn't so expensive. That are very simple plastic petri dishes. I had the luck that I didn't even had to pay for them. I got them from a good friend who is working in such a company but nevertheless they shouldn't be so expensive. The living sphagnum is from my sarracenia area and didn't cost me anything also.

sooxiwei 4th October 2010 12:27 PM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

that petri dishes wasn't expensive, but it is the live sphagnum that is expensive, it's sort of rare here...

sphagnum moss are common in part of lowland where the conds are favourable, and in intermediate and H/L they are more widespread.

sos here, I've got a seed that germinate, saw the green thingy growing very fast, took bout 3 days to reach near to 1 cm since it germinate, but the problem is that, the green thingy sprout from the bottom part of the seed that face downward, now it pushes the seed upward...what should I do...

thanks

What a coincidence, this morning saw a greenish thingy on my N.fusca seeds tray which i has given up hope on. Turn out got 1 seed germinated but the top growing into the sm. I used a tweezer to remove the sm around the thingy and saw two small leaves buried in the sm. So i just turn it upright and hope that it will be alright.

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

weird stuff happens here...seeing some of the "germination" on my pot, most of them looks like seeds of other plant/weedy grass because the green stuff grows till the seeds get pushed up realizing that it actually emerge from a tiny seed that looks like biblis seeds, being lazy, I left it there, till now...I saw an awkward growth on one of the new leaves...a pitcher...

NepNut 4th November 2010 09:18 PM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

Nep seedling when just germinated got a very distinct leaves (2 pointy leaves without pitcher). On the safe side, don't remove anything until you sure it's weed.

tzestan 4th November 2010 09:47 PM

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

Sometimes there could be more than 2 weedlike leaves before pitcher.

Re: Nepenthes seeds germination

lol, similar to that, but mine happens to have 2 pointed leaves for around a month before seeing one of the fastest growing one show up with 1 pitcher, it is amazing
