Last night, I bleached another batch of seeds.

Cindy, thanks for the pictures and video clip. Makes the whole process so much more interesting than it already is. Nice pictures man. You can see the outer black layer of the seeds eroding in the bleach water.

Khairi, what I do is I wait until the seeds turn white colour.

I`ve actually tried twice....once was fresh seeds. It didn`t work at all. Zilch germination.

2nd time, put in the fridge for one week, then bleached them. Only 1 germination.

It seems after taking out from the fridge, gotta wait for a day or 2.

Cindy , any fridge time involved for yours ? I currently just sow the seeds w/out bleaching coz the germination rate is higher. Heheh.

khairimhd, like David said...until the seeds turn white. I am more careful, checking every hour. This time it took about 6 hours. After that, I rinse the seeds several times and soak them in clean water overnight before sowing.

With fresh seeds, I thought germination was zilch too! I automatically assumed that no germination after a week means a gone case. Then I was happilly misting my Nep seed box...Four Byblis seedlings!! http://s3.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

The second batch, which is featured in the video clip, was refridgerated for about 2 weeks plus.

Tarence, are you sowing fresh seeds or after the refridgeration? Fresh seeds can work but it can take months! I occasionally find Byblis popping up in Nep pots which were near a pot of Byblis like 6 months ago. http://s3.images.proboards.com/rolleyes.gif

Cindy, i am sowing fresh seeds after bleaching, also seeds refrigerated 1 week then bleached, fresh seeds without bleaching...all sort of combinations. Very minimal success unlike the almost 90% success rate some folks are getting.

Tarence, how are growing your plants? Under direct sunlight? Do you pollinate the flowers or you leave them to self pollinate?

i grow the adult plants under direct sunlight. i let the flowers self pollinate.

could some seeds be formed without any germinating capabilities i.e. barren seeds ?

the 90% success rate was from bleached seeds by Jonathan i believe.

Tarence, I am not sure if the seeds can be infertile...I have got seeds that are still as fresh after being sowed for 2 months. Pinched them and out popped the nice round seed. http://s3.images.proboards.com/rolleyes.gif

I will nevertheless keep trying to germinate byblis from whatever method. Heheh, I want my Byblis forest ! so far, only got 1 flowering & seeding adult ( sold one off ) and a small kuci rat seedling.

But many many seeds to try & try again.

Just to share my experiene. Germination rate is low for me too. Even after using bleach, I'll only get about 5 plantlets out of about 50 seeds. But at least better than before... ie. zero germination.

I've had a pot of seeds that were sown more than a month. These were just sown without dipping them in bleach solution. So happen I did not have any seeds from my plant at that time and my hands were itching to sow some seeds (my weekly dose of sowing seeds). So I use a twizer and pick the seeds from the media. Put them in bleach solution until the seeds are white in colour and sow them again. After 2 weeks... waalaa!!! I've got a few germination. Kinda cool. I thought the seeds were a gonner after more than a month.

I got some funny results. I sowed some unbleached fresh seeds onto LFS....it was put in a covered plastic see thru container with low water level and 1 hour morning sun. That was 12 days ago.....today i saw 1 pot actually having 4 germination. I`m not kidding.....the other pot is still growth-less. I used to get crummy results before this too.

Is it the heat ?

Is it the high humidity levels ?

Is it the fresh seeds ?

I agree with you, David. Now I am trying to get seeds without helping the pollination. After that I'll go through the whole process again and see if I will get better results.

If only we can propagate byblis through leaf cutting. Hmm... Maybe I'll try and see since I heard that someone has tried leaf cutting on D. burmanii that is known not to grow from leaf cutting, and came out successful. If this can be done, it'll save us all the problem.

Maybe I should try stem cutting too and see if it roots. I realised they grow extra growing point as they get older. Maybe I can try cut one plant up like how I would treat a nepenthes vine.

Sure you can get a new plant from stem cutting, David. I think I'll do stem cuttings then. From one plant I can maybe get 3-4 if I cut it up. Hmm, this can be another sollution when the plant vine too long and start to fall over... CUT it OFF!

A thought just came into my mind. From what I read byblis usually will last about 2-3 years in cultivation. I have not reach there yet, so can't confirm on my plants.

I wonder if we do stem cutting on a byblis that is, lets say 3 years old. When the plant grow from the stem, will it start fresh as a new plant and last another 2-3 years or it will follow the life span of the original plant?

Hmm, if we compare with Neps,when we use an upper vine to do cuttings, we will get upper pitchers on the new shoot. Does this mean the plant is just a clone of the mother plant and it follows the age of the mother plant? If so, does byblis be the same?

This batch was in the fridge for 2 weeks. The previous batch without refridgeration produced only 5 seedlings. I am going to try the 3rd batch and see how it goes.

i got around there too in my latest bleached batch.....David & i observed that the bleached seeds will produce plantlets which look a little weird ( not like a byblis, just a thin dewless stalk ) when it first germinates. Only later ( a few days after germination ) will it have the byblis seedling `look`.

so Cindy, your byblis jungle is now gonna happen in the near future.

Tarence,

Any updates on your byblis leaf cuttings? Still no sigh of plantlets appearing on my leaf and stem cuttings, but both leaf and stem cuttings are still alife (in my limited knowledge, based on the fact that they are still producing dews).

I did some stem cuttings of various sizes from only about one-and-a-half inches long to a little over 2 inches long.

I did the cuttings on 3 plants and so now the original plants are left with just about one-and-a-half inch stem from the ground. Don know if these will survive. Lets see how vigorous these plants are.

If all is successful, from the 3 plants that I sacrific, I'll get 9 plants from the stem cuttings and a couple dozen plants from the leaf cuttings. http://s3.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif

David, so far so good. Out of the nine, eight of them are already Y-shaped and dewy. The last one is a single stalk and still emerging from the seed coat.

Wanna show off the Byblis liniflora that I got from David (thanks a lot man!) it's been flowering non-stop after a week I got it through mail... Got seeds but no luck in germinating them yet...

Mine (dono which floor above me) actually urinated from the balcony once... So no fertilizer sensitive plants around the "target" area...

Sighs... some people dono how to live in apartments...

uh oh...sorry, most of my vfts which go dormant so far never revived. dormancy treatment too difficult i.e. keep in dark place, can`t be too dry, keep moist, period estimate 3 months. but well, you got your 14 new babes.

Hi tarence, my Byblis leaf cuttings did not survive too. I guess they really can't be propagated by leaf.

Here`s what my current batch of byblis looks like.....thx David for the initial seeds & making my Byblis jungle dream materialise....when they bloom like this in the morn`, the amethyst colour of the flowers is really gorgeous. The only hindrance I have in propagating more plants is space as they need to be sheltered against strong wind & heavy raindrops so I can`t just put them anywhere in the garden....

Lisham, i just collected the seeds from my original 1 plant, germinated those. Repeat process. Collect your byblis seeds, try the bleach germination method. One mother plant can give you hundreds of seeds thru its lifetime. Easy to achieve byblis jungle.

I got 1 batch in a pot... Got fungus... Ugly Ugly fungus that looks like green dirty cotton attacking my spag moss nowdays... How to deal with those ah? any brand of anti-fungus thing recomended? anybody wanna help me by sending a tested and tried (succesfully, I might add) anti-fungus solution?

I got like 15 seed pods in an envelope right now... How long can I keep them viable eh?

Hi lisham...

Actually i have keep my seeds for 3 to 4 month now still doing fine and they does germinate in 3 days after bleach treatment... this time i get 100% germination... to avoid fungus growth try using 2 part peat 1 part sand mix and top up a thin layer of sand on top... they does still germinate well for me... i'll post some picture soon....

These are 2 weeks 1 day old byblis seeding... i use 2:1 peat/sand and add a thin top layer of sand so it dun look so ugly... i get 100% germination in 3-4 days...
