5 Attachment(s)
Hi folks,
Since I got poisoned by neps not too many moons ago , I've always wanted to see neps growing in the wild with my own eyes and study how and where they grew, I have never seen them in the wild before this trip. So this past sunday my friend and I had a chance to go recee and we managed to find common N. albomarginata but we didn't discover other species... It was just a half day trip but will definately return again in near future hopefully to be able to see more species.... :1thumbup: Sorry for my "amateurist" photo... First time  Also need to get better camera... Red albo Attachment 370 Whole plant Attachment 371 Some small albo red, they really don't need much substrate to grow on... wow Attachment 372 Attachment 373 Attachment 374 To be continued.... |

Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
Hi there cpnut,
It must have been thrilling for you to see them growing in the wild. I remembered the first time I saw albos growing in the wild, my heart just went bouncing like a ball. Can feel the blood rush though my veins. I also noticed too that albos picther and plant will have reddish colouration when they are exposed to sunlight. Like you, those that I saw growing in the shade are green and most of them have no pitcher. The site where I saw albos was in Perak and the media where some grow are also quite dry. Good photos for your first try. Keep it up and keep us updated with pictures of nepenthes in Kedah ok? we can compare their growing condions in different locations etc. Thanks for posting |

This plant was found at a very dry site among rocks under direct sun... that's why so red
Attachment 375 this too at very dry rocks and direct sun Attachment 376 albo "red speckle" ground pitcher Attachment 377 Quite a few albos found under forest canopy, many plants got no pitcher at all... need sun  Attachment 378 Ohh... look, so cute  Attachment 379 Surprisingly, we saw more red albo and the red speckle or 2 tone ones... I think I only saw one with green upper. Hope you folks like it. |

Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
Great field trip photos CPNut! I've been trying to find shots of albos in nature, as I bought a large number of small ones from MT earlier this year and have been wondering just how to treat them. I love the way the leaves look on the majority of your first set of photos...really makes me want to run down and change my plants position to a drier environment than where they are now! Keep posting!

Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
nice find. it's interesting to note the albos with red leaves but in cultivation they simply turn green:confused:

I only noticed small plants have this kind of red coloration whereas bigger or adult plants will have olive green color leaves, have anyone ever noticed this before? |

Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah

nope, not the "grey" or " black", probably not available in Peninsular Malaysia. But I still got many many area to explore... so you never know...
This is the darkest pitcher I came across but I think it's caused by age, however the leaves for this nep are very dark tone like it's pitcher... too bad I didn't take any pic... Attachment 399 |

Davvid, do you find many grey variety in Perak? Thanks for sharing. |
Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
Not sure. However, in that particular location, there was only a bunch of them in one particular spot. The rest are green and red. Perhaps other locations might have some more.
Perhaps it's just a few odd plants. |

Sorry lousy photos, it's a rainy day... :glare: Attachment 431 Attachment 432 Attachment 433 No... I didn't use marker pen or photoshop. Weird huh ?? |
Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
CPNut - did you happen to check inside the pitcher? The normally white cells are a 'bait' that the plant produces and which are easily detached by termites particularly. At the point that the termites have eaten off all the 'white' there are probably more than enough termites fallen to their death inside the pitcher. Any more and the pitcher can't digest them all in time and the pitcher/contents putrefy. I'm only guessing here, but could the plant have been out in the sun and when the white cells that normally cover that area were removed, it got a 'sunburn'? I'm up for anybody elses' explaination/guesses too!

Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
Robert,
Was the whole plant with that pitcher colouration or just one pitcher? |
Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
Hi Cpnut
Wah never seen a albo colour like that....waaayyyy nicer than some of the other albo colours. Ken |
Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
This is odd. But I can see that the white hairs are all gone. Simon, does the other pitchers on the same plant have this same black colour?
|
Re: N. albomarginata in Kedah
I found another plant nearby which have the same thing happend to it's pitcher. The new pitcher is normal like any red albo, the plants also look normal, just these older pitchers... I have seen pitchers where the white band is partly gone just like old paint falling off from the wall and there's no sign of this balck marking. The plant is not exposed to direct sunlight, it's was slightly under shade in the forest canopy as far as I can tell from the rainy weather that day.
From most of my observation, the main "diet" for the albo there are black ants (up to 3cm) and some winged insects. Never saw any termites in the picther before. I'm guessing it might be somekind of fungus that grow on where the white band suppose to be?? I'll keep my eyes open for the same "phenomenon" my next trip there, maybe go back to check on the same picther... this is by far the 1st time ever I saw this. I actually thought it's very cool to have a black band instead of white, would be great if can replicate what had happend there... |

Went to visit some albos again last weekend, got some pics to share, hope you'll enjoy
albo pitcher with black band again... I saw a few this phenomenon on some older pitchers. Still a mystery what caused it though . Attachment 610 The whole plant Attachment 611 The same plant with it's newly opened picher, it's actually quite a decent pitcher  Attachment 612 2 Toned peristome.... interesting coloration . Sorry have to use flash, it's very hard to take good shot for closeup under low light Attachment 613 Another shot wihout flash  Attachment 614 The whole plant, even the coloration of the picthers follow the same color theme... Attachment 615 albo squad form?? I have seen quite a few pitchers of albos but not many have such a squad pitcher. Can anyone verify this?? Attachment 616 Group shot. As you can see all the picthers from this particular nep have the same squad form Attachment 617 Cute little pitcher... what make this special it's actually an upper picther from an adult nep Attachment 618 Olive green pitcher Attachment 619 Is this albo "rubra" form?? Can anyone shed some light? Thanks. Attachment 620 |
