Sundew found in Malaysia! (part 2)

After visited the habitat of Drosera burmannii in Kuching, I knew that I have to look for sandy and sunny spot if I want to see D. burmannii in Peninsular Malaysia. But, where can I find this kind of habitat in Peninsular Malaysia? According to some very old records, D. burmanii was found in Kedah, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor. I used to stay in Johor for almost 2 years. I met quite a few of Nepenthes and Utricularia but never met a Drosera in Johor. As for Kedah, many places already converted into paddy field. The chance to see sundew in Kedah is very slim. So, Terengganu and Pahang might be the good place to explore. In last few years, I did go to Terengganu for fish sampling. I can see quite a few promising spots but always got no chance to stop.

Last week, Robert and I were going south for Betta and Nepenthes searching. I want to search for new location of Betta stigmosa before going down to Johor. We decided to go across Tasik Kenyir to Kuala Terengganu from Gua Musang.

It's a long and winding road! *biggrin2*

Few hours later, we start to see some limestone along the roadside.

When we came across this fast flowing river, I knew we were lost. We supposed to cross the Kenyir Lake but there was no road to move forward.

We made a U-turn and took another road. After an hours, we were far away from the river. The landscape now changed into a scrubland!

We decided to stop at this place when we saw some pitchers hanging from a tree.

It's a N. gracilis. A common species in Peninsular Malaysia.

N. mirabilis. Nothing special.

That's a burmanii! The flower stalk is really long. Mine do not give out such long flower stalk in cultivation. The media looks kinda dry as well. Amazing they can survive in such conditions.

Check the media. It's a mixture of sand and clay!
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c2...lim/tdrob2.jpg

This habitat is almost indentical to the habitat in Kuching.

Great find and post! It's amazing how you can walk around for hours looking for something, and once you find it, it seems to be everywhere! :P

This is really a great find, Lim. I thought D. burmannii already extinct in Peninsular Malaysia. Thank you for the good news. :1thumbup:
Those pictures are great too, you guys must have become crasy when you first saw the sundew. I have the same feeling when I, David & Jonathan went searching for wild neps last time, my heart kept on bumping when we saw the first N. ampullaria!
Those D. burmannii are so beautiful!:1thumbup: Hope we can hear news from you guys on D. spatulata, D. indica and D. peltata in Malaysia.

What a coincident, the first thing that caught our eye was actually N. ampullaria sticking out among the fern bushes.... then after closer inspection, Lim found we were actually walking all over the D. burmannii.... *biggrin2*

Re: Sundew found in Malaysia! (part 2)

I think there should still be some wild population on D. burmannii to be found in Eastern and North Eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The one I found in southern Thailand (actually not far from Malaysian border with Thailand) is on the West side of Peninsular Malaysia/Thailand.

I think might just like annual killifish. Survive drought by producing drought resistant seeds.
