L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand

Hi,
Got a chance to go check out some wild nep sites some where in southern Thailand. It's great to be able to see nepenthes species like N. kongkandana, N. ampullaria, N. gracilis, N. mirabilis and the hybrids in situ where they grew naturally. Here are some of the pics that I would like to share with you all... enjoy.

Great trip photos! This is the first I've seen of the Thorellii growing in the sand like that. Amazing...and it looks so dry! I also hadn't suspected the smallish leafed stem, almost like a gracils. Seems like most have the reddish underside of the lid...is that what you found? Were the sites spread out far apart or all close together? Thanks again,
~Shawn

Thanks guys for the comments.

Shawn,
I only managed to scout a small area but been told there's even more if travel deeper into the bush. The sad thing is that the surrounding area is slowly but surely being converted to farm land for agriculture.

In your photo amp 07 there is a lone big pitcher amongst the Amps, wonder how it got there.... mirabilis right?

Nice that you also saw natural hybrids!

Didn't know that Gracilis pitchers grew that big!

Hi Arvin,
It's not uncommon to see different species of nep growing side by side of each other literally...

Site 3 : N. mirabilis & N. gracilis

This is the 3rd site. Different type of forest, more undergrowth on the forest floor as sunlight can penetrate better with sparse canopy.

mirabilis-06 Sorry for the blurry pic. I've noticed some N. mirabilis from this location have slightly squatter/fatter lower pitchers. Perhaps it's a link to the evolutionary path of N. globosa "Viking" ??

Thanks for viewing, sorry for the long long post even it's just for some common L/L neps but I felt it's important for me to document and share among fellow enthusiast. I have a strong feeling it's just a matter of time before what I saw will be all gone in the name of "human development". :crying:

Just some update, after reviewing "Pitcher Plant of the Old World" Vol 1 by Steward McPherson, I think the N. thorelii that I have observed could have been the "undescribed" N. kongkandana.

Hey Jon! Great to see you back on the forum. Finnaly got your internet access up in the steaming tropical jungles of Sabah eh.

Man! I just love mirabilis-05 aka hot-hot lips!

Do you guys think that some of them might be hybrids or thorelii?

Gracilis-4 is a very beautiful specimen... all red on its picthers. That's red colour and not maroon right? Are all the pitchers on this plant red in colour? I know TS will go gaga when he sees this red gracilis. :)

Re: L/L Nepenthes in southern Thailand

You're very much welcome Jon... if you're in Sabah now, I envy you more.... *biggrin2*

David,

Ya, gotta love the mirabilis "hot2 lip", this form of mirabilis will have red/maroon lower pitchers, the uppers will be the "hot lip". For Site 3, as far as I can observe, there's only N. mirabilis, N. gracilis and it's hybrid (only 1 specimen as far as I can find).

I also love the red/maroon form of N. gracilis, there's only a few plants that produce this kind of pitcher and all the pitcher have similar coloration.

Maybe can ask Dr. Charles to check if whether the N. thorelii from Site 1 is in fact N. kongkandana . That will be so exicting... *biggrin2*
