My sarra seedling
Just sharing my sarra seedling grown from seeds.
S. leucophylla var. alba - sown Dec 21, 2007 and got germination on Jan 2008. This is the eight month old seedling: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSC08618.jpg S. psittacina - same time as above, only a little bit of germination http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSC08619.jpg S. catesbaei x wrigleyana (red wide mouth), sown April 08 2008 germination end of April 2008, so around 5 months old seedling: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSC08621.jpg On May 24, 2008, I moved a few to individual pot to see if they will grow better individually, you can compare the result  S. leuco http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSC08609.jpg S. psitta http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...t/DSC08608.jpg Now on the individual pot just experimenting with 'dekastar 16-9-12' fertilizer, not much changed yet, just applied last week. Enjoy, Ed |
Re: My sarra seedling
nice seedlings! i cant wait to plant mine.. did you stratificate them?
|
Re: My sarra seedling
So cute. I wanna try too!
|
Re: My sarra seedling
@malowie: yes I stratified them in the fridge for about 3 weeks.

Re: My sarra seedling
Nice little seedlings you have there Wijaya. It will be interesteing to see how they colour up as they get older.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Thanks Strath76, those are my very first batch of sarra seedlings, surely will love to see them colors up. Hopefully  but it is a pain seeing them grow so so slow for lol. Any tips to boost them faster?
Ed |
Re: My sarra seedling
Hi Ed, your seedling are so lovely, looked like corals in the sea by one glance. I have some growing slowly too. It's now about three inches after more then a year. Where did you place your seedling? they seem to look too greenish.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Wow....the small sarra so cute.....:1thumbup:
TS say the truth...Really like corals in the sea.....so beautiful...:wub: |
Re: My sarra seedling
@TS: Thanks, indeed after you said it, it looks like coral.
Now, on 'too greenish' is that bad or is that good? The individual pot one is put in my small 'seedling GH' and as for the whole tray I still kept them in ziplock bag, changing the water by every month only, the bag is exposed to few hours of morning sun light. Ed |
Re: My sarra seedling

You stiil keep your sarra seedling in ziplock bag? After mine had germinated, I have already exposed them to the outside world. I left them outside and treated them as what I did to normal sarra. I never pamper them any more (cruel), they received direct sunlight and rain. Eventually they coloured up as what they supposed to be. :2thumbup: hehe. |
Re: My sarra seedling
Hello Ed,
Nice seeding there, they looks lovely... Regards Jonathan |
Re: My sarra seedling
@Jonathan: Thanks.
@TS: Ok, see what you mean now, I pampered the seedling too much I think , will try to get them to adapt to outside world then, but will do it gradually as the humidity inside the bag is 100%. Thanks for the comments. One question, do you think they grow faster exposed to rain and sun? Ed |
Re: My sarra seedling
I didn't compare whether they are better outside or inside the ziplock bag, but I can be sure they will be healthier outside. Spolt child will never grow up.
Mine grow well outside, and already showed colour since small. Just went and check on the leuco seedling, the tallest one is about 5 to 6" tall now! Yeah, I open the zip gradually to let the seedling adapt to outside humidity, after a few days when the zip is already widely opened, I still left the seedling in the ziplock bag for a few more days to make sure they are fully adapted. I found sarra able to adapt quite well. |
Re: My sarra seedling
@Ed: you are welcome,
i support ts words, because i actually just dump all my seeds outside to the full sun and rain splashing on them (did not provide high humidity during germination aka no zip lock or container) and the plant still looks healthy since it was sow at 1 year 4 month ago the seeding are actually quit tall now but i did not measure them... Anyway wishing you all the best and happy growing^^ Regards Jonathan |
Re: My sarra seedling
Thanks guys,
I will do that then, but feel a bit worry as lately are raining quite heavily and my growing area is at the top of the fourth story so it is quite windy as well. ha..ha.. just love them so much and don't want to make any mistake ha...ha... But I got the point, will update again after I am done with adjusting those spoiled sarras of mine. ha...ha.. . Ed |

Re: My sarra seedling
Ooooo, they coloured up, congrates Edy. They looked so lovely. Did you place them outside getting rain & sun?
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Its so cute.

Re: My sarra seedling
Hi Wijaya
Well nice seedlings seem to grow so fast.....Anyways you think that if after a couple of seed grown sarr will there be a batch where doesn't need dormancy? Ken |
Re: My sarra seedling
@TS: some already outside with rain and sun even without water tray. Some still got covered from rain.
@Ken: it is still too soon to tell, those are my very first seedling, will have to wait another year or two to tell if they will skip the dormancy. Ed |
Re: My sarra seedling
Hi Wijaya
I see...........My S x Mitchelliana is a matured plant with 8" pitchers and considered quite big for me.....It has been with me for about almost a year......And so far no signs of dormancy it just grew grew and grew.....Just waiting for it to sulk (well i hope the opposite of that happens) Ken |

Re: My sarra seedling
@caseyhoo: Yes, I tried this as I got quite a lot of seedlings so trying to make them hardy and easy to grow, see if they will survive without water tray, I used 100% moss for those seedlings, they got the water when the neps got watering twice a day or from rain. I put those small pots in between my neps pot on the same table. But the mature one I still use the water tray, only for the seedling I dare to try also I believe they can be taught to adapt easier since they are from seeds.

I grow some in burnt soil/sand/peat mix, they are happy. |
Re: My sarra seedling
For me, my sarracenia works totally fine with or without water tray. Nice seedlings, wijaya!
Cheers |
Re: My sarra seedling
Hi
So you can actually grow sarrs without a water tray??? I would thought it will be hard maybe VFTs will do better compared to sarras...Anyways edward how many times do you water your plants daily???? My area is to dry to not use a water tray.....Anyways i just seperated a rhizome from the S mitchelliana.......Argh so tempted to grow them without a tray so that it will reduce the chances of mosquito larvae...Anyways i shall try it out one day Ken |
Re: My sarra seedling
Heh,just saw this post. Why do you need to put it in the fridge?
|
Re: My sarra seedling
the cold is to help the seeds greminate. The seed coat is resistant to water until it has been cold and wet for several weeks.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
What about soaking it in water overnight? And there's a kind of CP seed that need smoke to germinate, right?
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Soaking overnight won't help. Smoke is irelavent to sarr germination. smoke is for the species from very dry climates that experience fire.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
@marvin: sorry just saw your questions, alcran is right, putting in the fridge is called 'cold stratification' that works with sarra's seeds. Some harder seeds will need dipping into GA or even 'bleaching' like byblis seeds.

Re: My sarra seedling
Just thought I would add that in order to get a Sarra that does no require dormancy generally takes several generations. I would think that you would need to select clones that display elements of the trait you desire and then cross these. You then continue with this process until you end up with a dormant free plant. If you achieve it you could revolutionize Sarra's in tropical areas.

Re: My sarra seedling
That would be GREAT!!!!!!!!But sadly I got only one Sarra. Then it's up to others.......
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Try and get seeds from Florida colonies. Florida is sub tropical so the sarra there are half way there.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
AGREED.....Well but i thought collecting CPs from the wild are either illegal or not advicable (most illegal i guess) Anyways common sarrs do grow abundantly in the wild like wild bushes...Sooo i guess a couple of seeds wouldn't hurt that much but must always find out if its okay or not
Ken |
Re: My sarra seedling
Ken, collection of wild sarracenia seeds is illegal without proper permit. When Khoas said to get seeds from the Florida colonies, he meant seeds of plants originating from there.

Re: My sarra seedling
What about sending seed to overseas?Do you need permit?Like Khoas sending seeds to me?
|
Re: My sarra seedling
Hi Athene/Khaos
Okays well sorry for misunderstanding anyways thanks for clearing it... Ken |
Re: My sarra seedling

Re: My sarra seedling
The question is, why r we special =) nice healthy babies! they r on an excellent start, and they will love the rain u r getting, right? In the US, many growers i have seen use kids swimming pools, only like 10-20$ and very spacious. I would prefer to use them for pitcher plants and nepenthes. It can hold a hefty volume of water, so you can use it to house even badderworts. Use a brick to stand the pots on so more water can be held in the pool;so it wont evaporate as fast. If the sun gets tooo hot and scorches the plants, i use a bamboo shade.
|
Re: My sarra seedling
oh yeah, almost forgot. If you have pitcher plants growing inside, i suggest acclimatizing them right now for outside. One summer here, it got well over 98 degrees f. and the plants fourished in fun sun,all day. Also vft, they love full sun.
