N. veitchii

Larger plants of this species don't do consistently well for me. Maybe because of insufficient lighting or humidity...I am not sure. But lately, a male plant which flowered is back to pitchering again. The leaf is the same size as the developing pitcher at 3.5".

Humble beginning as a skinny Orang Utan...

Re: N. veitchii

N veitchii's are slow and sensitive growing plants.I can't really relate to N veitchii because i dont have one but i have a N veitchii x fusca which didn't do well for me at the start but has been a consistently pitchering for me but most of the other pitchers which came with it dried off.The biggest pitcher it has now came with it and its around 10cm tall but the biggest i grew is only around 3/4 that size. But i think it takes time to adjust to my new enviroment so now i think its happy.

Anyway whats the plant behind in the background some kind of pine??

Re: N. veitchii

Ken, that is some kind of fern, likely Lycopodium clavatum.

A week later, the Orang Utan develops a slight hunchback and belly.

Cindy, This nep specie can grow in Singapore? As in hot and humid enviroment? Or aircon? You keep in indoors or outdoors? Itching to buy one, scratch scratch scratch....

Re: N. veitchii

This is a cutting from another grower. He bought the plant from Malesiana Tropicals years ago as N. veitchii 'Hose Mountain'. So it is a highland form. This is the second pitcher for me. After the first pitcher, it flowered in May and took the longest time till now to recover.

Re: N. veitchii

Hi Cindy

Wow you must have waited a very very long time before the veitchii starts growing and pitchering.Didn't you cut the flower stalk?
Your veitchii is rrreeeeaaaalllyyyy slow growing by the looks of the pitcher. After a week and its still pretty much the same size hahaha.Well everybody knows that veitchiis are slow growers.

Bactrus
N veitchii has LL and HL form

Ken,
It ballooned up very fast. But during the last week, it has slowed down. Today, it opened! I'll post a pic later.

Betta,
It is planted in the usual sphagnum moss and perlite.

Cindy, thanks for clarification. So this is a highland form but is doing well in sea level Singapore. Think I can start attending to my itch already, will hunt for one soon.

Re: N. veitchii

OK...here is the confusion...the MT's veitchii mystery...

MT has got two veitchii forms. The 'Bau' and the 'Hose Mountains'. From what we see on MT's website, the 'Hose Mountains' is green with golden peristome. The 'Bau', is supposed to be be pink with yellow peristome.

However, when I wrote to the senior botanist at MT two years ago, he pointed out that in Oliver's photos, the first veitchii is their lowland clone and the third is the highland clone. When I asked him about the pink form sold by MT several years ago, he said it was the Hose Mountains. And that was the plant that I am showing in this thread.

So who is right? The botanist at MT or the people who put up the plants for sale? http://www.greenculturesg.com/forum/...t/rolleyes.gif

Btw, how is everyone's veitchii doing? How does 'Bau' compares with 'Hose Mtns'?

Good morning everybody.
Cindy, I think that your plant is the veitchii low land. Here is what I saw not very far from Bau.

That's a dead ringer for my pitcher! Thanks so much, Jean-Marc!

Do I see a bulbophyllum where the veitchii is growing out from?

The peristome was at its best two nights ago. A pity 'cos it won't stay flared for long.

Today, the peristome is starting to fold back.

As much as I tried, I couldn't get the correct colour tone with a PNS digicam. Until I moved closer! The pitchers are actually more pink flesh-tone in real life, rather than orange.

lowland veitchii pitcher and leaves are longish ( in simple layman term) while the highland form has tubby pitcher and leaves are curvy and broad. The following pic , taken last year, has the same coloration as Cindy's but note the differences in leave sand pitcher's structure.
