Veitchii beauties

the hairy veitchii, a humble beginning...

it comes in diverse forms and colours.

some growers i met mentioned that veitchii from the kelabit highland "climb" on trees but trees being sparse hence it was rare to observe? perhaps the statement was untrue. In-situ observation showed most scramble on the ground. where trees are available they climbed but their tendrils are not in uniform arrangement, as in the case of sabah's maliau basin tree clasping form. Any comment and why?

Re: Veitchii beauties

Very beautiful! There certainly is a diverse number of different veitchii. I've have no idea why in-situ's vetchii rarely climb but if there are few trees there, they may have evolved to scramble for more support and possibly less exposure to sunlight. Just a guess....

EDIT: What I meant about them scrambling to avoid exposure to sunlight is that the veichii makes use of the bush and other plants surrounding it (grasses, ferns, etc.) to shade it from direct sunlight. If there are few trees around, there's almost no shade so I'm guessing that the veitchii scramble among bushes and grasses to shade themselves rather than vine erectly upwards into the sun.

Gorgeous collage of veitchiis.. :) Has anyone tried growing them the natural way (mounted on wood)?

Re: Veitchii beauties

I try putting them on log with spahg moss about 2 month ago and still doing fine although the pitcher produce seems to be smaller. Maybe still acclimatizing. Hopefully they will continue to grow

yes, Edmund, these veitchiis are very "poisonous". They are easy to grow even in lowland but just need cool conds.

You are absolutely correct. I have seen this sp gave a big pitcher from a grower fan. The key is to make sure high humid and cool.

Compare all among family.. I like Bario the most :1thumbup::1thumbup:

Robert, mind share the medium for veitchii that you have come across? Who know one day they will be in my growlist....

Edmund,
i've seen growers using pure coconut chips cut into small size cubes around 1"-1.5", mosses collected from forest or sphagnum moss 20%/ and 80%perlite.

Re: Veitchii beauties

Currently all my nep medium mixed with coconut chip + sphagnum moss.

Some members mentiond coconut chip produce acid and oil which harm to the plant. Not sure is it true or not.... did you face problem when using coconut chip after few years?

I never face these problems. Possibly the oil ( coconut oil ) spilled on the husk when extracting the juice and kernel.

They are awesome. There are 15 of you, with Mike Lo and George?
Did you take a closer look if the main stem produced roots while clasping and growing upwards?

Only 13 of us with mike and geoge, some pullout last minute.
Didnt notice there are root growing out from the stem, the surface of the tree is very dry. It hug on to the tree using the leaf and can grow as high as 20-30ft which reach the top of the tree.

edward, what is sibu's veitchii?

Re: Veitchii beauties

Whoops, typo. I was meaning in-situ, not 'sibu'. Have corrected it.

Post more pics of veitchii, Robert! There is something I suddenly thought, is it possible that the flared peristome of climbing veitchii acts as some sort of clasp/grip for the whole pitcher? In most pics, I can see the peristome 'wrapping' around the tree trunk leaving the peristome still looking flared.

i dont mind to post but most will be old pics.

yes the peristomes were still flared, and pitchers lie against the host (tree).
